Patton is certainly on my list, but as a bio pic more than a war film. Gallipoli reminds me of another addition: Breaker Morant

Marite, I smiled when I saw that your sons love Buster Keaton movies. His movies are very mathematical. I’m smiling, but I’m not kidding. (Plus, they are very entertaining).

Another movie that I love, and would add if my list was as long as WashDad’s :), is Smoke. I mentioned this before on the Academy Award thread. Great movie, great cast, and absolutely, one of the best endings of any movie.

This is really quite a challenge, but here goes:
To Kill a Mockingbird
Tootsie
The Graduate
Edward Scissorhands
Benny and Joon
Chocolat
Rain Man
Midnight Cowboy
Life is Beautiful
The Hours

mathmom,
wow, Solaris. brings back memories of my teenage years.
We were Tarkovsky addicts. I still love “Mirror” , the rest of the lot…not so much anymore.

I forgot Some Like it Hot. I watch it every time it’s on…

Irishmom, I’m with you on Serenity and the genius that is Joss Whedon.

This is one of my husband’s favorite movies. He also liked the remake, although not as much.

Yay, another Browncoat!

My late father loved ‘Patton’ and George C. Scott. Had forgotten that one. Will have to check the library for some of these-

Oh Joss Whedon fans! We discovered him belatedly on DVDs! We started with Firefly a Christmas present from sister-in-law. A western in space - what fun! Of course we watched the movie which at least tied up most of the loose ends. Can’t honestly say it would be on my top ten list. Now we are on Season 4 of Buffy. The spoofs of high school life and the first year of college were spot on.

Lawrence of Arabia
Life is beautiful
Gone with the wind
Godfather

I know this was a miniseries, but my wife would probably choose Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth as her number 1.

I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I would have to say:
The Wedding Singer
The Shawshank Redeption
The Little Mermaid
The Green Mile
A Christmas Story
The Breakfast Club

Sorry, I graduated high school and college in the 80’s : P

dstark,
I am with your wife on that. :-)

Start with the only two perfect movies ever made:
The Great Escape
Shakespeare in Love
Perfect, meaning there is not a single moment that rings false or that could be improved. Genius.
Then:
West Side Story
O Brother Where Art Thou
The Usual Suspects
A Raisin in the Sun ( I dare you, watch it without crying!)
The Producers (the Zero Mostel version, not the recent poor imitation)
Full Metal Jacket
Chicago
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (the best final line. ever.
And to all the Joss Whedon fans - my wife has threatened to either divorce me or kill me if I ever again say that Buffy is the best extended work of popular fiction ever produced (approached, but not matched, by Lonesome Dove and I, Claudius). But so be it, because it is.

Gee, FireBadTreePretty, I never would have guessed you were a Buffy fan ; )
My DH is very accommodating of my Whedon obsessions.

IrishMomof 2.
Not too many people on CC would recognize the screen name reference.
If the apocalypse comes, beep me.

I get your screenname FireBad;

Little Miss Sunshine
King Kong
Goldeneye
Run Lola Run
Hitchcock movies especially Rope and Dial M
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf
Gone with the Wind
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof/Suddenly, Last Summer
…a guilty pleasure, Rocky 4

I’m also a closet Buffy fan…

FireBad, DS has (in absolute secrecy, of course) just finished season 5 of Angel after watching all of Buffy…he’ll begin Firefly soon.

My favorite Buffy line has to be Spike’s description of Giles’s life: “Cup of tea, cup of tea, almost got shagged, cup of tea”…

Wow. Who knew that Buffy and Firefly were the secret bond that join all of us together? Anyone else like Veronica Mars, too?

Movies, the current list:
