Does Pitt award any merit $$ for NHSRP scholars?
I don’t know about Pitt, but none of my 3 kids were offered a dime through the NHSRP.
I don’t think so. Pitt doesn’t have anything for national merit kids, so I’d guess not.
Thanks. I didn’t think so. Didn’t see anything anywhere about it.
Pitt does not offer any special scholarships for NHRP at this time. We do, however, award four (4) “National Merit College Sponsored Scholarships” in the amount of $1,000 each. To be considered for one of these four awards, students must inform National Merit that Pitt is their first choice school. This must be done by March 15 to be considered. The four students who are selected are notified in early may (note, after the May 1st deposit deadline).
Additionally, while we do not automatically award scholarship dollars to National Merit Finalists or NHRP students, we will look at your application holistically when considering you for scholarships, including any academic recognition you have received.
Here is the full description of how our Scholarship Committee reviews applications for merit scholarships (any student who has applied to the University before January 15 will be automatically reviewed for merit scholarships):
"Criteria for scholarship consideration include SAT/ACT results, overall grade point average, class rank (if applicable) and strength of curriculum. Activities outside of the classroom such as leadership positions, athletics, community service, etc. are reviewed but given secondary consideration.
In recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed ALL of the following:
minimum SAT score of 1450 (math and critical reading scores only) or 33 ACT (Math and English subscores average)
overall ‘A’ average
top 5% class rank (if applicable) while participating in challenging high school curriculums consisting of AP/IB/Honors courses
record of excellence in various academic and nonacademic activities outside of the classroom"
Best of luck!

Thank you again for the follow up. I guess we shall just wait and see what happens!
on a related issue, does minority status play a role in scholarship awards, assuming other issues are strong. does a minority student still need at least a 1450/33 to have realistic shot of getting scholarship? please assume they have top 5 percent class rank, vigorous course load, and reasonable to above average EC’s in their favor.
NHSRP scholarship at University of Arizona, Arizona State U., University of Nebraska, Ball State, possibly at Iowa State University (limited availability under GWC), 50% University of Evansville.
@hailtopitt1787 - you all might want to do some introspective thinking on not offering money to National Hispanic Scholars given that only 2.9% of your student body is Latino/Hispanic (per http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=85 ). There are many other very good schools offering money to draw the minority talent in. Pitt should be more proactive in recruiting and retaining minority students. It won’t be the Pittsburgh weather that attracts them:-)
@collegedadoftwo, While we do not offer special NHRP scholarships at this time, we do offer several other scholarships to diverse students. You can find more information here: https://oafa.pitt.edu/learn-about-aid/academic-scholarships/diversity-scholarships/
