National Merit Cutoff

actually the 50,000 out of 1.4 million isnt 1% its around 3%.

My son is a junior in Iowa and received a 232 on the PSAT. He took the SAT with absolutely no prep this spring and got a 2290. Was wondering if he should do some of the sample questions and retake in the fall, or if 2290 is OK? GPA is 4.00 unweighted, around 4.2 weighted. Seems like 2290 would be like a 229 PSAT so not much difference at least in my mind. Would this be considered a significant difference at all? Math is his strong point, writing his weak one, so he wasn’t thrilled about writing the essay on the SAT.

2290 is fine, no need for a retake. They’re not looking for a match, just something in the ballpark to validate that the PSAT score wasn’t a fluke.

He has nearly a perfect score… along with a perfect GPA. I woule leave it alone. He’s great!

Thanks for your help. I’m pretty unfamiliar with what is even good on SAT, as most schools around here just want the ACT. He did get a 36 on that, and even I know that is good!

cMom,
FWIW, my son had virtually identical scores to your son’s on PSAT and SAT (also w/ no study). He is not retaking.

I took the PSAT in Oct 2006 and got a 219 in CA but was never notified in spring. Does this mean that I didn’t make the cut-off?

The cut off is 200. I think you should get something from the counselor.

My son’s PSAT score was also a 219 and he got the letter. My advice is to call the school and bug them. The letter he was given, however, did have a deadline of May 23rd for response… but don’t despair. The ONLY thing this letter did was provide an opportunity for your S to have his PSAT scores sent to two colleges at no charge. When the Commended and NMSF notifications come out in the fall, you will no doubt be contacting colleges then!

Does anyone know- if your kid lives in one state but goes to school in another state- commuter, which state’s cutoff score do they use? We live right on the border of one state and another one.

From this thread, post [#354](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=2893327&postcount=354):

Thank you!

Does anyone know if they just send PSAT or the student SAT files, like SAT I and SATII? I was wondering if they send the whole student file Ithen might not have to pay for the collegeboard to send them.

i got a 213. last year’s cutoff was apparently a 212. Does it usually go up a lot each year, or am i fairly safe?

actually this year it might go down because of how they scored the writing section.

what percentile does your psat score have to be on your sheet… in order to be any scholar? commended, semi… etc… 85% 90% 95% 99%???

Commended I think is about 95%, semifinalist and finalist are ALWAYS 99%.

I do believe that to be a NMSF and NMS, you need to be in the 99th percentile in YOUR state. My son’s scores place him in the 99th percentile against all juniors nationwide but here in Washington our cutoff last year was 219. He has a 219 this year which may or may not be high enough to qualify. If we lived in NJ or one of the other eastern states where the scores are even higher, he certainly would not qualify. The only way any of us will know, of course, is to wait until September/October when the notifications are sent. :-)

How about national acheivement scholar? is 85-90% good?

woah, back to crazy mom, 232 and 2290 are EXACTLY what i got, wow, lol
i did retake the SAT though… i’ll find out soon what i got
