National Merit Cutoff

haha, we’re both newyorkers at the 220ish-line. so let’s hope we’ll make it. :)

Man, I had no idea the PSAT could actually make such a difference. Everyone around me was just like PSAT doesn’t mean anything, and I treated it as such. I didn’t study for a minute and got a 217 in MA. The one kid in my grade who did decide to study has a much lower GPA than me but got a 223. Of course, I had no idea that being a finalist could make such of a difference. When I got a book and studied for SAT I got a 2360. Anyway, I’m just a bit bitter about discovering this now. Good job to those who make (semi-)finalist.

quick question. now that were approaching time for SF to be announced, can anyone tell me if a 227 in CA is likely to receive finalist standing?

Yes, you will almost undoubtedly be a semifinalist, and probably a finalist too.

well thats a relief…it’s odd though, i only missed 6 questions on the entire test (2 in each math, verbal, and critical reading) and lost 13 points on it. im not complaining though. i could really use finalist standing, i have no clue how im going to pay for college. sorry for probably repeating questions that have been asked many times, but how soon after naming SF are the finalists announced?

If I remember correctly, finalists are not named until January, maybe even February. You will have to deal with some paperwork, write an essay or two, to move from semifinalist to finalist. It is not automatic, no matter what your score. Most semi-finalists become finalists if they submit the paperwork in time, if their SAT scores are reasonable, and their grades are good.

Does anyone know if a 223 in Maryland is likely to fall within the cutoff range for semi-finalists?

twinkie,

Here’s the best info available. Draw your own conclusions. Do keep in mind that the cutoff for commended dropped from 203 ('05 PSAT) to 200 in '06.

So, if I’m understanding this correctly, semi-finalists will be notified in early September and commended will be notified in late September?

September is really crawling around. I’m in OK and I have a 207 which is right on the borderline. This waiting is really driving me crazy. Only one person from my high school has ever done well enough on the PSAT to advance to even commended so my counselor is not that familiar with the process.

Thanks in advance,

Sarah

What state are you in, Sarah?

Sarah is evidently in Oklahoma (i.e. OK).

If your school is not notified in early September that you are a semifinalist, then you are commended.

Sarah, if you are a semi-finalist, be sure to pay close attention to all deadlines and requirements for submitting paperwork. Your guidance counselor will probably be excited to have a potential semifinalist at the school, so will be careful to follow the instructions. However, I’ve read some horror stories here on cc about counselors who don’t give students their packets in time to write essays, etc., so check the website and make sure things are filed in a timely manner.

oops- overlooked that, midmo. Thanks

Looking back a year ago in this thread, NMSF notifications were mailed to the schools on Monday, August 21, 2006. There is no uniform policy for the school to notify the students of NMSF status. In the same schedule is kept, this thread should explode with activity in the next few days, unless a new one is started.

Thanks everyone for the quick response!

Sarah

I take the PSAT in a month…agh, ANXIETY ATTACK!!! My SAT prac test scores right now float raound 2000-2200 so im gonna study my butt off for this , because i really need scholarship money badly,

standrews, my son and his pals were kept waiting until Sept. 10 or thereabouts before the principal finally released his list to the counselors, and they got the packets put together…

Does anyone know how long you have to send everything in if you are a semifinalist? My son’s school has horrendously slow mail system and cares about nothing in the fall but football. I’m afraid he won’t get his packet until several weeks after it is mailed. He got a 232 in Iowa, should that be above the cut?

232 is good enough to be above the cut in any state.
Can’t answer the question on when the packet is due though…

Thanks for the info, I may stalk the high school secretary if he doesn’t get anything by mid-September.

Apparently NMSF notifications are arriving at the schools. So says this thread.
