I’m pretty sure @Eleileen is looking into UT Dallas for her son! That’s the school we first started discussing.

I have 3 kids that are all two years apart, all Fall babies. All 3 were NM kids, my oldest, my only girl went to OU back when their NM scholarship was really good, though not as good as UTD’s;-) She got her BS in Meteorology and stayed to get her masters in secondary math and science education partially covered by her NM scholarship. Both my boys got their BS and MS in Comp Sci and, in a little over 6 months my oldest son will finish his PhD in CS and all my kids will be officially done with college!

Just think, you’ll have this college thing down pat for younger son:-)

TAMU does have a pep band for basketball. But if you want a chance to be invited to apply for Brown, submit complete app with all requested essays ASAP, and include to 2 max recommendations. You can still get admission and the regular NMF scholarship (which triggers instate tuition), but they only make so many invitations for the Brown interviews, and only for specific majors. Instate tuition is very reasonable, so either way is a good deal.

true! i have a girl, but she is in 6th grade (and the entire process will probably change by then)

Tulsa just updated their NMSF scholarship package on their website. Looks like the meal plan and student fees are no longer covered.

oh yikes, I suspect a lot of schools will revisit these benefits given the economy and funding issues.

That’s too bad. It is still an amazing package. It is one of the few that is available to NMSF.

  • Full tuition (excluding summers) for four years. Students may petition for a fifth year if needed to complete an undergraduate degree

  • Recommended enrollment: Minimum of 15 credit hours per semester

  • Required enrollment: Minimum of 12 credit hours per semester

  • National Merit Semifinalist package recipients must make positive progress toward a degree as determined by the Center for Advising and Student Success Coaching

  • Stacking policy: The National Merit Semifinalist Package cannot be combined with other UTulsa funding or scholarships

  • Tier I housing (upgrades are available at your expense)

  • National Merit Finalist scholarship: Minimum $750 scholarship from the National Merit organization (if eligible). Renewability is based on the type of National Merit funding received

  • Outside scholarships: May be combined with the National Merit Semifinalist package if permitted by the awarding organization

I just wanted to update everyone that UT Dallas will pay for one night at a hotel for national merit SF visitors. better than nothing.

Oh, good to know! Are you planning to go to a Scholars Day or visit another weekend anytime soon?

It’s a flight away for us, and I’m having a hard time fitting it in with D26’s schedule.

we are 2 flights away! we are going for part of scholar day on Sat and to do a short 1:1 with a few faculties and the national merit folks on Monday before flying home.

School spirit at TAMU is quite unique. My son found it appealing when we visited on a whim (we were more or less driving by), many will not. I highly recommend a visit. As the largest undergrad institution in the US, its the definition of big.

we attended a virtual “preview” of the NMF benefits with UTD and they did inform us after the first year, the student can either pick the comet 14 meal plan or get its equivalent in cash value. also, we did ask about “school spirit” and the NM scholar who current attends UTD from OOS reports the NM cohort housing together at Sirius Hall (honors hall, mostly NM scholars and McDermott scholars) do lots of activities together.

Logistically, how did your kid submit their UTD app without paying the fee? My kid’s app won’t submit without paying. Thanks!

Email them at admissions-nmsp@utdallas.edu and ask if they’ll waive the fee for your NMSF child.

Did your kid get an overall positive feel for the school?

I think he did but he is shy and introverted, the preview was mostly about the scholarship and what needs to be done to get the scholarship and details about the honor programs and benefits Collegium V honors (automatic for NMF) and davidson management program for those in JSOM business school. we will be visiting in person in a month and I’ll keep you posted.

Is it an accurate statement that if you are a NMSF and have maintained excellent grades, have a confirming SAT score, filled out the application and your school did as well, that you will be a National Merit Finalist?
