Transcript of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson’s Press Briefing Following The Scrimmage On Saturday, August 18

In Attendance: Bill Wagner (Annapolis Capital), Sandra McKee (Baltimore Sun), Christian Swezey (Washington Post) and Corey Masisak (Washington Times)

Wagner: So, what does it feel like to outdraw the Navy basketball team for a scrimmage?

Johnson: I don’t know about that.

Wagner: It was good fan support today.

Johnson: Yeah, there were a lot of people out here today. That’s good.

Wagner: It shows the support that your program is getting.

Johnson: Hopefully. It was a good sign today to have a lot of people out here.

Wagner: Is Rickey Dobbs making a move up the depth chart?

Johnson: No, the third group isn’t real good about knowing the plays that well anyway and then this week they were running Temple’s plays off cards so I wanted to put him in with one of the other groups and let him play a little bit to see how much he knew, which is not a lot. He knows some things. He has some ability. He is a good player. He is going to be a good player, I think, if he keeps working.

Wagner: It’s not good to see Antron limping off the field is it?

Johnson: It was the same ankle he tweaked before. I think he will be OK. I think somebody rolled up on him. We just have to get him healthy.

Wagner: Is Deliz coming back anytime soon?

Johnson: Hopefully this week.

Wagner: How about King?

Johnson: He should be back Monday.

Wagner: Did you feel the offense moved the ball pretty effectively? From the stands it looked like the defense was being driven back a lot.

Johnson: I think it had ebbs and flows. The first few drives it was too easy to go 70 yards, but in the second half of the scrimmage the defense got some stops and the ball was out. We put the ball on the ground way too much today to ever have a chance to win a game. I thought we lost a little intensity as the scrimmage went along. We lost a little focus.

Masisak: Did Adam Ballard look pretty good to you?

Johnson: Yeah. Kaipo did some good things too. They only played a couple of series, which is all I wanted to see.

Wagner: We haven’t really talked too much about Ballard this camp. It seems like he came to camp this year all business and looking in pretty damn good shape. Adam has had a pretty good camp, hasn’t he?

Johnson: Yeah he has. He’s played really well.

Wagner: Is that encouraging?

Johnson: I expect him to play well. He needs to be a good player for us.

Academic All-American Chris Renninger Named Navy Golf Captain

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Academic All-American and two-time All-Patriot League selection Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) has been elected by his peers to serve as Navy’s team captain during the 2007-08 golf season.

“The captain’s job is to represent the team both on the course and at the Academy and I’m honored that my teammates believe I can do that,” said Renninger. “Being selected a leader among my fellow athletes is one of the highest compliments I can be paid.”

Renninger is coming off his most accomplished year at the Academy, excelling on and off the links. Renninger owned the team’s low average for the 2006-07 year, posting a 75.6 stroke average and top 20 finishes in five tournaments. He closed out his junior campaign by finishing as the runner-up at the 2007 Patriot League Championship. He garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors after turning in a 3-over par 213, just a stroke back from medalist Matt Czarnecki of Holy Cross.

A chemistry major who boasts a 4.00 grade-point average, Renninger stands No. 1 in his class of more than 1,000 students. He has earned a 4.00 GPA in seven consecutive semesters, while being named to the Commandant’s List five times, the Dean’s List four times and the Superintendent’s List twice. In June, he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Second Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and a month later he became just the second golfer in the league’s history to be named the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year (former Navy All-American Billy Hurley is the other). He is only the third non-senior in Patriot League history to receive the award and first since NBA veteran and Colgate graduate Adonal Foyle claimed the award in 1995-96.

“I am confident that Chris will provide great leadership by example for our team, both on and off the golf course,” said 17th-year Navy golf coach Pat Owen. “Chris has demonstrated that hard work and perseverance pay off. In three years he has developed from a raw prospect, into one of the finest players in the Northeast. He is also a very selfless leader, always placing the interests of the team first. We look forward to a great season with Chris at the helm!”

As the captain, Renninger not only wants to lead Navy to a win over Army in the annual Star Competition, as well as a league title, but he also has high hopes to help create an environment where “every member of the team can excel.”

“The captain’s main responsibility is to look out for the welfare of each team member, whether it be in the classroom, in military matters or on the course,” added Renninger.

The Navy golf team, which lost just one letterwinner to graduation (Jeremy Garner), kicks of the 2007-08 season when it plays host to the annual Navy Fall Invitational Sept. 8-9 at the United States Naval Academy Golf Course.

Following Practice On Monday, August 20

In Attendance: Bill Wagner (Annapolis Capital), Ron Snyder (Baltimore Examiner), Gary Lambrecht (Baltimore Examiner)

Wagner: How you doing coach?

Johnson: Good.

Wagner: Happy Birthday.

Johnson: Thanks.

Wagner: Can you tell us what you got for your birthday?

Johnson: I could, but then I would have to kill you.

Wagner: Did Chet (Gladchuk, Director of Athletics) come out here today to give you a bonus for your birthday?

Johnson: I don’t know, he probably did.

Wagner: How was practice today?

Johnson: It was a little better today. The tempo picked up like you would expect now that we are focused on Temple. I think the guys were tired of beating on each other. We still have a ways to go, but I thought everybody had a little bounce in their step today.

Wagner: So is today the day that you split the team up?

Johnson: We actually used a scout team some last week, but today we fully turned our attention to Temple. The scout team guys knew who they were for a while. You usually don’t have to tell them.

Wagner: Today though it’s kind of final as far as who is going to be on the scout team and who has a chance to play against Temple. Have you had anybody retire because they are on the scout team?

Johnson: Yeah, we had one guy who decided he was going to go wrestle instead of play football.

Wagner: Who is that?

Johnson: Joe Breaux

Snyder: The depth chart came out today and I see that it’s Harmon’s job at kicker.

Johnson: He’s always been the kicker. That’s hasn’t been a question. Punter is the one that’s up in the air a little bit.

Wagner: Is that still the case?

Johnson: In my mind it is. I haven’t seen anything to change my mind. It’s Veteto’s job until somebody beats him out. I haven’t seen anybody beat him out, but he could be a lot more consistent and I think Greg would be the first one to tell you that.

Wagner: How is the development of Ben Gabbard going at guard?

Johnson: He’s coming along. He’s going to be a starter. He has an opportunity to go in and do some things. He’s been banged up a little. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Ben has ability.

Snyder: How is the health of the team?

Johnson: We’re in good shape right now. Knock on wood. Nobody got hurt seriously on Saturday, which is a good thing.

Wagner: So Deliz (Jeff) is the only one of the predicted starters still out.

Johnson: Yeah, and we are hoping to get him back here this week.

Wagner: I was going to ask you a little bit about Adam Ballard, we touched on him the other day but I wanted to follow up. When you looked back at the film, it looked to me like he was running pretty damn hard.

Johnson: There were a lot of holes in there, but he ran pretty well too. He did some good things.

Wagner: Have you seen a lot of improvement in Adam from last year?

Johnson: Adam has always been a pretty good player. When he’s healthy and when he’s right he’s a load. He’s a big guy and he’s tough to tackle. Eric (Kettani) did some good things too on Saturday.

Wagner: How do you compare Adam to the guy that was here before him, Kyle Eckel?

Johnson: They are a lot different. Adam’s bigger than Kyle. They are just different. They are both good players in their own right, but they are just different.

Wagner: Has Adam not reached the performance level of Kyle?

Johnson: I wouldn’t say that. I would just say they are different.

Wagner: Do you think Adam has pro potential?

Johnson: With the right team he does. If he could find the right team for what he can do. That’s what Kyle is going to have to find is the right team. Neither one of them is going to be the feature back for anybody, but in the right role they both have a chance.

Wagner: Have you had any NFL scouts contact you about Adam?

Johnson: Yes. There have been several here to look at him.

Wagner: Do you give a positive recommendation?

Johnson: Yeah, I always give a positive recommendation for our guys.

Wagner: But you give an honest opinion.

Johnson: Of course, but usually they are coming to look off of recommendations from somebody else. We have had NFL scouts here to look at both Adam and Irv Spencer. The last two guys that were here were here to look at Irv. They take a look and make their own decisions. Nothing I tell the scouts is going to make up their mind. They are going to make up their mind off of what they see.

Wagner: One other thing on the depth chart that I noticed was that Zerb (Singleton) and Shun (White) flip-flopped again. What’s going on there?

Johnson: It doesn’t matter.

Wagner: I was surprised that Shun was ahead of Zerb last week.

Johnson: It doesn’t matter. I could care less. I will grab them and put them in when I want them in the game anyway. They are both going to play and they will both probably end up playing about the same amount of plays.

Wagner: Do you have a fourth slot back that deserves playing time or are you just going to play the three?

Johnson: Oh, we’ll see. Those three have all played, but we have some other guys that are working hard. Bobby Doyle has done some good things, Scott Oswald has done some good things, Greg Shinego has been hurt, we could play more than three. It just depends.

Kari Weniger to Serve as 2007 Navy Soccer Captain

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.), an Academic All-American and the team’s top returning point-producer off last season’s record-setting Navy women’s soccer team, has been elected team captain by her peers.

“It is a huge honor to be named captain,” said Weniger, a three-year letterwinner whose balance as a play-maker and finisher has been an instrumental part of the Mids’ success over the last several years. "We have a great group of women. They aren’t just tremendous soccer players, but they are all-around good people.

“My job is to make sure the team has everything it needs to excel. That means talking to the coaches when conflicts arise between schedules or giving advice to the Plebes who are learning to balance soccer and the Naval Academy’s many demands. We have a dedicated group of players and I will do anything I can to make sure that they have everything they need to be successful, both in soccer and in every day Naval Academy life.”

Weniger is coming off her most successful season where she was tied as the team’s third-leading scorer with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. She was was tied for eighth in the Patriot League in points per game (0.83) and seventh in assists per game (0.25). She was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25 after firing in the game-winner in the Mids’ 4-1 win over Albany and followed up two days later with a goal and a pair of assists in a win over Siena.

An exceptional student, Weniger was named a Second-Team Academic All-American and NSCAA/adidas All-East Scholar in 2006. Majoring in ocean engineering, she boasts a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average. She is ranked 18th in academic order of merit among 1,073 students in the Class of '08 and 27th overall (factoring in military performance). Weniger, who has achieved a 4.00 GPA in six of her seven semesters at the Academy, has appeared on the Superintendent’s and Commandant’s Lists five times.

“Kari has several of the characteristics necessary to succeed in the role of team captain - she’s compassionate, she’s diligent, she’s approachable, she’s fair and she’s honest,” said 15th-year Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "She’s experienced success on the field, in the classroom and within Bancroft Hall. Kari exhibits the highest levels of effort and sportsmanship and is a great role model as a teammate and for the young soccer players who come out on game day to support our team.

“Leadership has been an important part of our success over the years,” added Gabarra. “It’s important for our program to do the right thing whether it be on the field, in the classroom or in the Hall. All of those components are important to Kari, as well, and I’m confident she will lead the team with the respect of her peers.”

The Mids kick off their season Aug. 31 when they meet Iowa in a neutral site contest played at the Northern Illinois Tournament in Dekalb, Ill. Navy’s home opener is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 4 against Saint Peter’s (7:00 pm). All kids (12 and younger) who wear a soccer jersey will receive free admission to the home opener. Additionally, fans can print out a coupon off www.NavySports.com (go to women’s soccer page) and receive two tickets for the price of one for the Saint Peter’s game.
