Navy Men’s Soccer Earns Spot in NSCAA / adidas Regional Rankings

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On the heels of a 1-0-1 weekend, the Navy men’s soccer team made its first appearance in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, holding down the No. 8 spot. The Mids are one of four Patriot League teams listed in the poll, and it marks the first time Navy has been in the regional polls since October 2005.

Navy opened the season with a scoreless tie against Temple on Friday night, then outlasted Air Force, 1-0, on Sunday. Senior forward Travis King (Loveland, Ohio) scored in the seventh minute with assists credited to sophomores Chris Schneider (Arlington, Texas) and Mark Garcia (Tempe, Ariz.) for the only goal of the game. The Navy defense then stood up to every Air Force challenge, holding the Falcons to just nine total shots with just three of them coming on goal. Senior goalkeeper Evan Barnes (Dublin, Ohio) was the beneficiary of the stout defense, recording his second shutout in as many games.

American (1-1-0) is fifth in the region following an impressive win over George Mason on Sunday. Lafayette is tied for eighth with Navy and Bucknell is 10th in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Navy will play a total of six teams currently ranked in the regional rankings as Iona (T-8th), St. Francis (N.Y.) (T-8th) and Longwood (10th) are all ranked in the North Atlantic region. The Northeast Regional poll was not released as of Tuesday afternoon.

Navy will travel to Baltimore this weekend for the UMBC Soccer Classic to take place on Sept. 7 and 9, at UMBC. Navy will play Iona at 2:00 pm on Friday, before taking on St. Francis (N.Y.) at noon on Sunday. Navy’s next home game will occur on Sept. 29, as 2006 Patriot League Tournament champion Bucknell comes calling at 7:00 pm, for the Patriot League opener.

Riordon, Barnes Earn Weekly Patriot League Honor

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Defenseman Will Riordon (Oak Ridge, N.C.) and goalkeeper Evan Barnes (Dublin, Ohio) earned the Patriot League’s first installment of the men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week accolades, respectively, for their roles in last weekend’s games at the Anders Navy Soccer Classic. It marks the first time since Oct. 27, 2003, that Navy has had two weekly award winners handed out by the Patriot League.

Riordon, a 5-10, 170-pound senior that serves as the team captain, spearheaded a Navy defense that was stingy in a scoreless tie against Temple and a 1-0 win against Air Force. Riordon and his teammates allowed two foes just 16 total shots in 200 minutes of action, including just two in the first half of both games combined. Just seven of the shots were on goal. In Navy’s 0-0 tie with Temple on Friday night, the Owls recorded just seven shots, while in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Air Force, the Falcons recorded nine shots. The award is the first weekly honor for Riordon and marks the first time since Oct. 4, 2005, that a Navy player won Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors. It was the first time since Oct. 27, 1996, that a Navy non-goalie won the accolade.

Barnes, a 6-4, 215-pound senior, also earned his first weekly accolade after recording shutouts in the first two games of the season. In the season-opening win against Temple, Barnes recorded three saves in 110 minutes, then added three more in a 1-0 win over Air Force on Sunday. Barnes is tied for first in the Patriot League in goals against average (0.00), save percentage (1.000) and shutouts (2), while ranking fifth in saves per game (3.00). The shutouts were the third and fourth of his career, and he moved his career record to 5-6-2 with the wins. It marked the first time Navy has recorded back-to-back shutouts since Sept. 11-16, 2005, and the first time Navy recorded shutouts in the first two games of the year since the 2004 campaign. For his career, Barnes has made 50 saves for a career save percentage of .769, and a GAA of 1.08. Barnes is Navy’s first winner of the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week award, which started being awarded in 2006.

Meanwhile, on the Patriot League leaderboard, the Mids rank fifth in shots per game (11.50), seventh in goals per game (0.50), tied for third in assists per game (1.00), tied for first in goals against average (0.00), tied for first in shutouts (1.00), tied for first in fouls per game (14.00) and sixth in corner kicks per game (3.50). Navy leads the league in attendance early on, averaging 1,014 fans per game. The contest against Temple drew 775 fans, the eighth-largest crowd to witness a men’s soccer game at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, and Sunday’s game against Air Force drew 1,254 fans, the fourth-largest crowd in men’s soccer history at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Mids Earn Second Straight Shutout, Hold Saint Peter’s Without a Shot

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior forward Sam Schroth (Chester Springs, Pa.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Navy women’s soccer team (2-0-1) to a 4-0 victory over Saint Peter’s (0-2) Tuesday evening in the Mids’ home opener. Navy outshot the Peahens, 34-0, putting 16 shots on goal.

Tuesday’s contest marked the third game in five days for the Midshipmen who left early in the morning last Thursday to participate in the Northern Illinois Tournament in DeKalb, Ill. (tied Iowa, 1-1, on Friday; def. IUPUI, 3-0, on Sunday). Navy traveled back to Annapolis on Monday, returning to the Yard during the evening hours.

“This was a tough stretch for our team with tonight’s game being our third in the last five days,” said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. “I thought our depth really showed tonight, really in the first three games, for that matter. Six different players have accounted for our eight goals so far and another five have provided assists. It’s important to know that we can sub and not have a drop-off in talent.”

For the second consecutive game, Navy scored its first goal in the first three minutes of the contest. Senior Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) dribbled down the left side of the field, crossing the ball to classmate Katie Traster (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) who fired in her first goal of the season (2:30) from 10 yards out. Fox has now produced a point in all three games for the Mids this fall.

Though Navy took 19 shots, including 11 on goal in the opening half, the Mids were able to muster just one goal by the halftime break. Navy made wholesale substitutions in the second half, giving its starters a breather and its bench an opportunity to put some goals on the board.

Schroth answered the call quickly, finding the back of the net less than two minutes into the second stanza. Junior CiAnna Weikle (Lakeville, Minn.) started the play out of the middle where she found freshman Carissa Youker (Potomac, Md.) in the box. Youker quickly sent the ball to Schroth who was wide left and Schroth sent it past back-up keeper Leigha Ashmen.

Six minutes later, Schroth took the ball away from a Peahens defender with only the keeper to beat. After getting around the goalie, Schroth walked the ball in for her second strike of the evening.

Navy’s final goal of the night was scored by Weikle, who like Schroth, took the ball away from the defender and fired a shot straight up the gut for her first goal of 2007.

Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.), Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Rachel Tarbox (Upper Arlington, Ohio) all saw time in goal for the Midshipmen, while the Peahens’ Reanna Gibbs (10 saves, 1 GA) and Leigha Ashmen (2 saves, 3 GA) split action.

The Midshipmen will get a short breather before playing host to the Navy Invitational on Friday and Sunday. On Friday at 7:00 pm, Navy will face a 1-0-1 Rider team that shut out George Mason, a traditionally strong program in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Mids will take on an undefeated Towson team on Sunday in the tournament finale beginning at 3:00 pm.

Navy Travels to Fordham Invitational This Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men’s cross country team will compete in its second-consecutive road meet when it heads to the Fordham Invitational on the trails of Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., this Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Last Saturday, the Mids kicked off their 2007 campaign with a first-place performance out of nine teams at the Sea Gull Opener in Salisbury, Md. Navy, who raced only its freshmen a week ago, have won that meet six times over the last-nine years to open the year.

Leading the freshmen contingent to the finish line for Navy was Nathan Liversedge (Fr./Wilmore, Ky.), as he placed third out of 89 runners with a time of 26:35. Classmate Matthew De Villers (Fr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) immediately followed in fourth with a 26:37 clocking. Navy’s newcomers ran in a tight pack last week, evidenced by only an 18-second spread between the team’s first- and fifth-fastest times.

The Midshipmen will be making their fifth appearance at the Fordham Invitational in program history on Saturday and have come away as the team champion on three prior occasions (1998, 2002 and 2006). Last year, the Midshipmen totaled 36 points to finish 10 ahead of second-place Penn to top the field of 21 teams.

Navy returns four runners that placed among on the team’s top-five times at last year’s invitational. John Olsen (Sr./Staten Island, N.Y.) placed third out of 180 runners with a time of 26:00 to lead the Mids. Team captain John Kress (Sr./Colorado Springs, Colo.) landed fourth with a 26:03 showing, while Andrew Grant (Jr./Athens, Ga.) finished in 26:35 for 10th place and Chris Horel (So./Belford, N.J.) posted the 12th-best time with his 26:44 clocking.

Following this Saturday’s meet, the Midshipmen will return to Annapolis to host their lone home race of the year on Saturday, Sept. 15. The action for the Navy Invitational on the USNA Cross Country Course is slated for a 10 a.m. start.

Mids Head to Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s cross country team will head on the road to partake in the Dartmouth Invitational at the Hanover Country Club in Hanover, N.H., this Saturday at 11:10 a.m.

The Midshipmen will be making their first visit to Dartmouth’s home 5k course in the program’s 25-year history.

Last Friday, Navy finished third out of 11 teams at Appalachian State’s Covered Bridge Open, a 5k race held at an elevation of 3,300 feet above sea level. Navy’s 95 points were only bested by 15th-ranked Georgia’s 27 points and 21st-ranked Florida State’s 35 points. The Midshipmen landed their top-seven runners among the top 30 and boasted a miniscule 12-second spread between their first and fifth-fastest times.

Erica Ziel (So./Saginaw, Mich.) led the way for the Mids, crossing the finish line in 19:22.45 for 20th place. Maureen Dooley (Jr./Durham, Conn.) finished 22nd with a time of 19:26.10 and Katie Rentz (Fr./San Diego, Calif.) produced 19:29.53 showing for 23rd place.
Mids to Play Host to Trident Classic this Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy volleyball team will play host to its annual Trident Classic this weekend in Macdonough Hall. The tournament features a pair of matches Friday and four matches Saturday, with round-robin play taking place between Central Connecticut State, Marist, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the host Midshipmen.

The Mids enter the weekend riding a three-match winning streak and with a 4-1 record on the young season. Each of Navy’s three most-recent victories have come in three-game sweeps.

Navy as a team is averaging 14.6 kills per game and is hitting .250 on the year, while holding opponents to 8.7 kills per game and a .099 attack percentage. One of Navy’s strengths through the first part of the season has been its serving where the Mids have totaled 61 service aces to just 26 for its foes.

Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) is pacing the Navy offense with an average of 3.62 kills per game, while Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) ranks second on the squad with 3.25 kills per game and leads the Mids with an average of 3.00 digs per game. Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) is the third Mid to be averaging multiple kills per game this season (2.79 kpg), while also leading Navy with a .385 hitting percentage and a 0.64 blocks-per-game average.

“We have built some nice momentum heading into what will be a challenging weekend for us,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “We are only two weeks away from the start of the Patriot League season and we still have a great deal of progress to make before we are ready for league play. Continuing to make that progress is one of the many goals we have for us this weekend.”

The Mids will open the tournament Friday at 7 p.m. against NJIT. The Highlanders, who have yet to play a home match this season, are winless through seven matches this year. Included among the losses for the squad this year have been a four-game setback to Army and a five-game loss (16-14 in game five) Wednesday night at Seton Hall.

NJIT is averaging 11.42 kills per game this year and is hitting .116 on the season. Conversely, Highlander opponents are averaging 16.58 kills and have totaled a .293 attack percentage. Kristy Haeckel is leading the NJIT offense with 4.19 kills per game, with Agnieszka Pregowska averaging 2.38 kills and a team-best .277 hitting percentage. Defensively, Sabrina Baby is averaging a team-high 4.81 digs per game.

Saturday’s schedule for the Mids begins with a 1 p.m. match against Marist and concludes with a 6 p.m. contest against Central Connecticut State.

Marist travels to Annapolis on the heels of a three-game loss to Army Tuesday night that dropped its record to 4-4 on the season. The Marist offense has totaled a .178 hitting percentage this season and is averaging 12.7 kills per game, while its defense is allowing foes to hit .211 and average 13.1 kills per game. Additionally, both the Red Foxes and their opponents are averaging 2.1 service aces a game and approximately 14.0 digs and 1.5 blocks per game, respectively.

Individually for Marist, Allie Burke leads the squad with 2.60 kills and 0.84 blocks per game, as well as with a .333 attack percentage on the season.

Central Connecticut State, meanwhile, has compiled a 5-2 record on the year and, most recently, posted a four-game victory over Holy Cross Wednesday night. The Blue Devils are averaging 14.6 kills per game and are hitting .233 on the season as a team. Their opponents, meanwhile, are averaging 13.3 kills per game and have accrued a .153 attack percentage.

Lauren Snyder leads the CCSU offense with a 4.73 kills-per-game average. Defensively for the Blue Devils, Kaitlin Petrella is hauling in an average of 5.31 digs per game, while three players on the squad are averaging at least 1.00 blocks per game.

Friday’s match for Navy against NJIT will be the first meeting between the programs. The Mids are 1-1 all time against Marist, with the last match played between the teams coming during the 1997 season. Navy holds a 2-0 lead in the series with Central Connecticut State, but Saturday’s match will mark the first contest between the teams since 1988.

The non-Navy matches this weekend feature CCSU against Marist (Friday, 4 p.m.), CCSU vs. NJIT (Saturday, 11 a.m.), and Marist vs. NJIT (Saturday, 4 p.m.).

Midshipmen Golf Team Opens 2007 Fall Campaign at Home

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men’s golf team opens its 2007 fall campaign Saturday, playing host to the Navy Fall Invitational. Saturday and Sunday’s action will take place at the par 71 USNA Golf Course in Annapolis with 18 holes set for both days. Teams will tee-off between 8:30 and 11:00 am on both days.

The Midshipmen will field four teams - Navy Blue, Gold, White and Gray - in the 17-team tournament, along with Brown, Delaware, George Washington, La Salle, Maryland (Red and White), N.C. State, North Dakota St., Rutgers, Saint Augustine, Saint Francis, Saint Joseph’s and Seton Hall.

In the 13 years the Navy Fall Invitational has been played, only two teams have claimed the tournament title more than once - Navy and George Mason. The Mids won the tournament in 1993 and again in '95 and ‘96, while the Patriots won the inaugural invitational in 1992 and again in 2005. Navy is the only previous winner among this year’s field, though Maryland and Seton Hall have been victorious in the Mids’ annual spring tournament.

Last fall, Loyola (290-286 - 576) became the 10th different winner of the annual Navy Fall Golf Invitational after shaving off four strokes from its score in the first round. The Greyhounds moved up from a fourth-place tie with St. Bonaventure to claim the title over Winthrop (289-289 - 578) and Penn (292-286 - 578) by two strokes. Loyola’s Blake Ferguson staged a run at the individual title by shooting the low round of the day with a 2-under par 69, but North Dakota State senior Eric Johnson earned medalist recognition by defeating Ferguson in a play-off.

After losing just one letterwinner off last year’s squad, head coach Pat Owen is anxious to get back out on the links and build upon the progress his Midshipmen had made by the end of last spring.

“We are looking forward to hosting the fall classic in what I think is an outstanding field,” said the 17th-year coach. “We have a deep roster this year and will be putting four Navy teams out on the course this weekend. We are expecting great weather over the next few days and the course is in great condition. I’m looking forward to starting off the season on a positive note by playing on our home course.”

The Mids capped off the 2007 spring campaign with a second-place finish at the Patriot League Tournament played at the Bucknell University Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa. A pair of players garnered All-Patriot League kudos, including 2007-08 team captain Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) who finished the tournament in second place with a 3-over par 213 and garnered all-league recognition for the second-straight year. One of the most improved players on the team, he cut nearly four strokes off his average between his sophomore and junior years. He finished the 2006-07 season with a team-low 75.6 stroke average that featured five top-20 finishes, three top-10 showings and a pair of top-five marks. In addition to his success on the links, Renninger was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America and the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Returning to the lineup is Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) who capped off a strong sophomore season by being named to the All-Patriot League Team. The local product finished the year with a 76.8 stroke average that featured a pair of top-10 finishes and three top-20 showings, including a sixth-place finish at the league championship.

Juniors Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) and Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) are expected to shine for the Mids this season. All three have been regulars in the lineup since their arrival at the Academy. Stinson owned Navy’s second-lowest stroke average a year ago with a 76.0. He turned in five top-20 finishes, including two top-10 marks, and finished among the top 18 at the league championship. Wielgus finished his second year at the academy with a 76.6 stroke average where he recorded four top-20 marks, including two top-10 finishes and one top-five showing.

Playing in his final Navy Fall Golf Invitational is senior Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio), who turned in a 76.5 stroke average last year. He has placed in the top 20 in two of the three Navy invites in which he has taken part. He has finished among the top 20 in 10 tournaments during his career, including a trio of top-10 marks.

Six new faces have joined the Navy golf team this fall - Steve ‘Beau’ Guidry (Durham, N.C.), Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.), Blaine Henning (Simonton, Texas), Marcus Heyland (Fort Madison, Iowa), Rob Merkert (Severna Park, Md.) and Josh Ziska (Camarillo, Calif.) - and will see action in this weekend’s tournament.

2007 Fall Schedule: Sept. 8-9 - Navy Fall Invitational (Annapolis, Md.); Sept. 21-23 - Sea Trail Intercollegiate (Sunset Beach, N.C.); Sept. 29-30 - Army - Star Match (Annapolis, Md.); Oct. 6-7 - Scotty Duncan Memorial (Stanton, Del.); Oct. 13-14 - Big 5 Classic (Fourtown, Pa.); Oct. 22-23 - Sycuan Collegiate Invitational (El Cajon, Calif.).

Navy Plays Host to Rider and Towson in Weekend Soccer Action
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The undefeated Navy women’s soccer team will play host to a four-team classic this weekend at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility with two games slated for Friday and Sunday. Longwood (1-1-0) and Towson (2-0-0) open play on Friday at 4:00 pm, while the Midshipmen (2-0-1) battle Rider (1-0-1) in the nightcap beginning at 7:00 pm. On Sunday, Longwood faces Rider at 12:00 pm, followed by a showdown between Navy and Towson at 3:00 pm.

After posting a 1-1 tie in its opener against Iowa last weekend, Navy has since put together back-to-back wins against IUPUI (3-0) and Saint Peter’s (4-0). While the Mids played their first three games in just a five-day span, by the end of the weekend Navy will have played five games in 10 days.

Six different players have accounted for Navy’s eight goals this fall, while an additional five have produced assists. Senior forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) has led the way this fall, producing a goal or an assist in each of the first three contests. Her goal in the 66th minute against Iowa forced extra minutes, while her shot less than two minutes into the game against IUPUI led Navy to its first win of the year. With 18 goals and 12 assists over her four-year career, she is just seven points shy of joining Navy’s all-time top 10 scoring list. Kara Hardebeck (1999-02) stands 10th on the list with 55 points.

Senior Katie Traster (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) scored less than three minutes into Tuesday night’s contest against Saint Peter’s, marking the second consecutive game the Mids scored in the opening three minutes.

Besides Fox, junior forward Sam Schroth (Chester Springs, Pa.) is the only other player to produce a pair of goals in what has been a balanced offensive display so far. Schroth fired in back-to-back goals less than six minutes apart in the Mids’ victory over Saint Peter’s. It marked her first multi-goal performance in a Navy uniform.

Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) directs the defense from the goal, where Navy has surrendered just one goal on 15 shots.

Rider enters Friday’s contest against the Midshipmen with a 1-0-1 record that features an impressive 2-0 victory over George Mason in the Broncs’ season-opener. Rider nearly made it two in a row, but Hartford held off the Broncs last Sunday by scoring the game-tying goal in the 86th minute. Rider freshman forward Lauren Musumeci scored both goals in the George Mason win, while Amanda Scully fired in back-to-back goals just two minutes apart against Hartford. In her rookie campaign, Alex Post is minding the goal where she has given up two goals and made 11 saves.

Towson, who faces Longwood in a neutral site contest Friday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, brings an unblemished 2-0 record to Annapolis. The Tigers have peppered their opponents this fall, as they have outshot their competitors, 42-22. Towson earned a 5-1 victory over UMBC last Friday in its opener before shutting down Eastern Kentucky, 4-0, last Sunday. Like Navy, the Tigers have a balanced offensive arsenal with seven different players scoring their nine goals. Second-year forward Erica Marshall is pacing the team with five points on two goals and an assist. Classmate and fellow forward Kaitlyn Zamroz scored Towson’s first two goals of the season, her only two shots of the year. Keeper Brandi Daniels, a member of the 2006 All-CAA First Team, has stopped nine shots on goal, while boasting a 0.53 goals-against average.

Navy to Open 2007 Season at Frostburg State on Sunday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy sprint football team will kickoff its 2007 campaign this Sunday when it travels to Bobcat Stadium to take on Frostburg State JV at 6 p.m.

The Midshipmen own a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series over the Bobcats entering Sunday night’s contest. The two teams last met during the 2002 season, as Navy went up to Frostburg, Md., and handed the hosts a 55-7 defeat.

The Midshipmen sport an impressive 58-2-1, a .959 winning percentage, all-time record in season-opening contests. Navy has won 31-consecutive season openers, with its last opening day loss coming in 1975.

Navy also boast an all-time record of 21-1, a .955 winning percentage, against teams non-CSFL teams, including its current 10-game winning streak. The Midshipmen have won 13-consecutive non-league games since a loss in the 2001 Anthracite Bowl.

Last Saturday, the Midshipmen geared up for the regular season with a 14-7 victory over Washington & Lee in a scrimmage at Rip Miller Field in Annapolis. Navy’s defense limited the Generals to 123 yards of total offense and tallied nine sacks on the day. Offensively, quarterback D.J. Green (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) fired touchdown strikes to wide receivers Tommy Tellson (Jr./Bedford, Texas) and Todd Barriger (Sr./Prescott, Mich.).

Following Sunday’s game, Navy will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when it heads to the Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the first of two games against Army this year.

2007 SEASON PREVIEW

With a program as entrenched in success as the Navy sprint football program, the objectives for the 2007 squad are no different than any other team to don the Navy blue and gold - win the CSFL title and beat Army.

This season, the Midshipmen will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Maj. Jake Jenkins, USMC, an individual accustomed to winning during his sprint football playing career with Navy a decade ago. Helping Jenkins reach the annual goals set forth is a group of 31 letterwinners from last season, 11 of which served as starters.

QUARTERBACKS

For the fourth-consecutive season, Navy will turn to a new starting quarterback to take the snaps from center. However, the Mids will not be inexperienced in this regard, as D.J. Green saw action in four games last season. The junior from Indianapolis completed 10 of his 20 pass attempts for 117 with a touchdown for the 2006 squad. Also competing for time as the signal caller are Matthew Mitchelson and Jon DeWitt. Mitchelson spent some time at wide receiver one year ago, hauling in a 23-yard touchdown pass against Princeton.

RUNNING BACKS

Perhaps the highlight of the returning Midshipmen this season is the rushing attack, as Richard Engel and Enrique Harris they teamed up for 993 yards on the ground with 12 touchdowns. Engel, a first-team all-league running back in 2006, churned out 659 yards on 115 carries with nine scores. The Navy senior posted three 100-yard efforts on the year, two of which came against arch rival Army. Harris, a second-team all-league running back, tallied 334 yards with three touchdowns on 52 rushing attempts and also had a 100-yard performance against Penn. Nate Stewart, Steve Benson and Alfonso Meidus all saw playing time in 2006 and will be expected to serve again in 2007. The trio of running backs totaled 206 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries.

RECIEVERS

The aerial game will have several capable targets to haul in passes and make defenders miss. Leading the cast of receivers is Tommy Tellson, who earned second-team all-league honors after making 18 receptions for 273 yards and two touchdowns last year. Offensive team captain Todd Barriger will also provide the Mids with a deep threat, as he averaged 26.8 yards per catch in 2006. Nash Bagby and Brad Cash both saw time at wide out during the 2006 campaign and are expected to contribute again this year.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The Midshipmen return three starters on an offensive line that paved the way for 358.0 yards of total offense and 27.5 points per game. Michael Bosworth earned first-team all-league honors in 2006, as he started all six games at the right guard position. Jeff Schuele started at left guard in every game last season and earned second-team all-league recognition, while Drew Cecil protected the quarterback’s blind side at left tackle in a starting role during the 2006 campaign.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Plenty of experience returns on the front four of the defense in 2007, as two returning starters and the defensive team captain highlight the cast. Justin Nabozna, a first-team all-league defensive lineman in 2006, led the team with eight tackles for a loss of 31 yards and finished fourth on the squad with 25 tackles. On the other side of the line, Galen Landis produced 18 tackles and a sack in six starts during his sophomore campaign. Defensive team captain Taylor Brashear will be expected to provide leadership and a force in the middle of the defensive line.

LINEBACKERS

Despite the graduation of Ryan Engle and Danny Davis from last year’s team, Navy’s linebackers in 2007 are reloaded for success. Brian Smith led the team in tackles with 39 one year ago, and was such an electric force that he earned second-team all-league distinction and the team’s Special Forces Award. Tyler Hawkins stepped up during his freshman campaign to make an immediate impact last year, as he made 21 tackles, 14 of which came in a start at Cornell. Chris Combellick also saw action in four games in his first season with the sprint football team in 2006 and will be counted on for additional help this year.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Navy’s secondary heading into the season returns plenty of athleticism and covering ability this year, despite losing two starters from a year ago due to graduation. James Campbell earned all-league recognition in 2006, as he led the team with three interceptions and four pass breakups, while also accumulating nine tackles and forcing a fumble. Andrew Wright joined Campbell in the starting cast, as he totaled 22 tackles and swatted away three passes en route to all-league honors. Hunter Armour could also be counted on to immediately produce for the Mids, as he spent his first two seasons in Annapolis playing for the junior varsity team.

KICKERS

The kicking area will be a strong area for the Midshipmen, as they return their kicking specialists from last year. David Reifenberg made all 15 extra-point attempts and connected on three of four field goal attempts in earning first-team all-league kudos. Reifenberg and Stephen Phillips combined on kickoff duty in 2006, as the two kickers combined for two touchbacks and held the opposition to a 28-yardline average for starting field position. In addition to wide receiver duties, Bagby was named an all-league punter after averaging 34.2 yards per punt and dropping in three of his 13 punts inside the 20.

Garcia’s Goal In Double Overtime Lifts Midshipmen, 2-1

BALTIMORE, Md. – Navy sophomore Mark Garcia (Tempe, Ariz.) scored in the 104th minute, lifting the Mids to a 2-1 win over Iona in the UMBC Adidas Soccer Classic on a hot Friday afternoon in Baltimore. The win moves Navy’s record to 2-0-1 overall. Iona, which entered the game ranked eighth in the NSCAA North Atlantic Regional rankings, falls to 1-2-0 overall.

“We played a little sloppy in the first half, and look a little tired, but I was proud of the way we battled in the second half,” said Navy head coach Rich Miranda. “We were playing to their strengths in the first half by playing down the middle of the field. We told them to get wide in the second half and it worked. We showed a lot of character and toughness in the second half.”

Navy fell behind 1-0 on an outstanding invidual effort by Iona’s Aly Lo, who beat two Navy defenders and found the back of the net in the 14th minute for a 1-0 Gaels lead. Iona would take that lead into intermission.

However, Navy started to apply the pressure in the second half, drawing even in the 51st minute. Junior Adam Pennington (Tampa, Fla.) one-timed a perfect cross into the box from Justin Waskey (Georgetown, Ky.), who had beaten two Iona defenders to the endline. Pennington’s shot from 15 yards out found the lower right corner and tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half. The goal was Pennington’s first career goal.

After a fairly-even remainder of the second half and first overtime session, the Mids ended the game early in the second overtime session, Garcia received a cross from classmate Chris Schneider (Arlington, Texas) at the six-yard box and played a perfectly-timed bicycle kick that rocketed into the back of the net for the “Golden Goal”. The goal was Garcia’s first of the season and second of his career. The assist was Schneider’s second of the season.

“It was an incredible goal,” said Miranda. “When it was in the process of happening, we thought he wasn’t going to try the bicycle kick, but that was his only option. It was one of the best goals I have ever seen in a college game.”

It was Navy’s first overtime-winning goal since Matt Sanchez’s netter defeated Massachusetts, 3-2, on Sept. 1, 2002, in overtime. Navy’s 2-0-1 start is the best start since the 2001 team that went 11-3-3 and advanced to the Patriot League Tournament also started the year 2-0-1.

The Mids outshot Iona, 11-9, and drew nine corner kicks to Iona’s six. Both teams recorded 12 fouls. Evan Barnes (Dublin, Ohio) recorded two saves in goal, while allowing his first goal in three games. Through three games, Navy has allowed just 25 shots, and just 10 on goal.

Navy Outlasts NJIT for Volleyball Win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Krista Eschelman (So., Germantown, Md.) totaled career highs in kills, hitting percentage and blocks to help the Navy volleyball team post a four-game victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday night in Macdonough Hall. The Midshipmen recorded a 26-30, 30-27, 30-24, 30-28 victory over the Highlanders to close day one of the Trident Classic.

“We started slow tonight, due in large part to NJIT, but we were able to clean things up starting in game two,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “As the match went on a number of people really stepped up at big points in the match. I thought Krista had perhaps the match of her career, so far, and our bench really performed well when called upon. Lizzie Grider (Sr., Marion, Ind.) was one person who was very steady for us during the points she played.”

Navy struggled out of the gate in game one, allowing NJIT to go on an early 8-1 run and take a 13-7 lead. The Mids would pull to within three points on four different occasions over the remainder of the game, but the Highlanders held off every Navy rally to post the win.

Navy totaled 16 kills in the opening game to 11 for NJIT, but the Mids tallied 11 attack errors to just four for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders went on another sizeable run early in the second game to turn an 11-8 deficit into a 13-11 lead. The Mids again trailed by a pair of points at 15-13 when Navy went on its best run of the match to take an 18-15 advantage. Soon, however, the Highlanders were able to knot the score again at 20-20.

Navy found itself trailing by a score of 23-22, when a Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) kill tied the game at 23 points apiece. Back-to-back ball handling errors and an attack error by NJIT proceeded to give Navy some breathing room at 26-23. After the Navy lead shrank to 26-25, Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) knocked down a kill to give the Mids a 27-25 advantage. Following a service error by Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) that sliced the Navy lead in half, Dougherty recorded another kill to boost the lead up to to 28-26. A kill by NJIT’s Agnieszka Pregowska made the score 28-27, but she followed her kill with a service error to allow the Mids to serve for the game. Dougherty stepped to the service line and dropped in an ace to tally the victory for Navy.

The Highlanders quickly jumped in front of the Mids at the start of game three by a score of 5-1, but Navy eventually tied the game at 9-9. The score would be tied four more times, including at 15-15, when a Dougherty kill gave a Navy a 16-15 advantage. That kill began a 4-0 run for Navy as the Mids took a 19-15 lead.

Navy still held a two-point advantage at 26-24, but then Eschelman proceeded to make her presence felt in much the same way Dougherty did at the end of game two. She knocked down back-to-back kills to give Navy a 28-24 lead then, following a kill from teammate Marissa Watson (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif.), Eschelman ended the game with another kill of her own.

In all, Eschelman totaled six kills and no errors on nine swings in game three.

Navy never trailed in game four, but never held any kind of comfortable lead, either. The Mids thought they had build some breathing room by taking a 25-20 advantage, but four-straight points by NJIT sliced their lead down to just one point. The margin would also be one point at 26-25 and 28-27 when an NJIT attack error allowed Navy to serve for the match at 29-27. A kill from Katrina Hornstein made the score 29-28, but Sims knocked down a kill to end the two-hour contest.

After being outhit in the opening game .179-.096, the Mids posted a .241 hitting percentage over the remaining three games while NJIT hit .210 over the same span. Navy’s block also started working after game one, with nine of the team’s 11 blocks coming over the final three games. Additionally, Navy totaled 13 service aces (against 15 service errors) on the night, with the Highlanders tallying a pair of aces and five service errors in the match.

Dougherty paced the Navy offense with 19 kills and Sims posted 13 kills, while both Gibbs and Eschelman tallied 11 kills on the night. Eschelman’s added a .391 attack percentage and match-high six blocks.

While four Mids reached double figures in kills, a trio of players hauled in 10 or more digs on the night. Leading the Navy passers was Aimee’ Burns (Sr., Dallas, Texas) with 16 digs.

NJIT was led offensively by Kristy Haeckel’s 14 kills, while Sabrina Baby grabbed 27 digs and Kubra Tanrikulu totaled 21 digs.

Four matches are slated for Saturday at the Trident Classic, with the Mids (5-1) taking on Marist (4-5) at 1 p.m. and Central Connecticut State (6-2) at 6 p.m. The remaining two matches feature NJIT (0-8) facing CCSU at 11 a.m. and then Marist at 4 p.m. CCSU posted a 3-0 sweep of Marist in Friday’s Trident Classic opening match.

Rider Scores Late to Tie Midshipmen, 1-1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A goal at 86:18 by Rider sophomore midfielder Kimberly Reichel erased Navy’s 1-0 lead, forcing extra minutes and an eventual 1-1 tie in women’s soccer action Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis. Navy (2-0-2) outshot the Broncs (1-0-2), 24-7, including 4-0 in the combined overtime periods, but could reach the back of the net just once.

After a scoreless opening half that saw the Midshipmen outshoot the Broncs, 11-2, Navy got on the board when senior forward Brigitte Fox’s (La Mesa, Calif.) shot was deflected off the hands of Rider freshman goalkeeper Alex Post’s hands. Rookie midfielder Anastasia Abid (Williamsburg, Va.) was able to square up to the goal, sending the shot into the net at 55:20.

Navy held a 9-5 edge in shots in the second half, putting four shots on goal. Rider capitalized on one of its three shots on goal in the second stanza when Erin Mahar fed Reichel from the right corner. Mahar sent the ball over Navy keeper Lizzie Barnes’ (New Orleans, La.) head, just out of her reach from nearly 15 yards out.

In the first overtime period, Fox’s 15-yard shot was foiled when Post came out to snatch the ball out of the air. Navy saw another opportunity in the second overtime slip away as Abid and Fox worked together along the left sideline, where Fox sent the ball just a step too far ahead of team captain Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and it was again taken out of play by Post.

Barnes made just two saves in the game, while Post stopped eight shots on goal for the Broncs.

For the Mids, it marks the 20th time in 278 games (14-plus seasons) that they have ended in a tie and the second time this season.

Navy will be back in action on Sunday when they play host to neighboring Towson at 3:00 pm. Towson improved to 3-0 Friday afternoon after handing Longwood a 5-0 loss at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Rider and Longwood will kick things off on Sunday in a neutral site contest beginning at 12:00 pm.

The Midshipmen accounted for five of the 20-fastest times on the day in totaling 56 points, only 14 more than team champion Penn and six higher than second-place Princeton. DePaul finished fourth with 160 points and Stonehill rounded out the top five with 162 points.

Navy has finished third or better in each of its previous four trips to the Fordham Invitational in program history.

Olsen, who produced the team’s fastest mark at last year’s Fordham Invitational, crossed the finish line in 26:36.
Navy Posts Three Wins at Dartmouth Invitational

HANOVER, N.H. – Navy women’s cross country runner Arwyn Becker (Sr./Avon, Colo.) led the team with a fifth-place performance as the Midshipmen topped the field of four teams at the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday morning in Hanover, N.H.

Making their first visit to the Hanover Country Club in program history, the Midshipmen owned five of the 10 fastest times to record victories over Keene State (25-36), Dartmouth (20-37) and UMass (20-43).

Similar to its season-opening meet at Appalachian State, Navy packed its runners well in creating a very slim spread over its top-five runners. The Midshipmen produced a 13.2-second spread on Saturday after an 11.7-second differential among the scoring five last week.

“We really had a great showing today,” stated Navy head coach Karen Boyle. “I am really excited about our pack work. It’s really starting to come together.”

Becker boasted the team’s best clocking for the first time in her career, as she crossed the finish line in 21:04.2. Team captain Kyleigh Millhouse (Sr./Boiling Springs, Pa.) led a tight group of four Navy runners as she placed seventh with a 21:12.1 showing. Katie Rentz (Fr./San Diego, Calif.) came in eighth with a 21:14.1 clocking, followed by Erica Ziel’s (So./Saginaw, Mich.) 21:15.2 effort for ninth place and Maureen Dooley’s (Jr./Durham, Conn.) 10th-place time of 21:17.5.

N.C. State Leads Navy Golf Invitational, Mids Sixth

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Juniors David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) each shot 4-over par to lead the Navy Blue squad to a 19-over par 303 team score in the opening round of the 17-team Navy Fall Golf Invitational Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis. The Mids sit in sixth place just a stroke behind North Dakota State in fifth and seven strokes behind Delaware who sits in second place. N.C. State, meanwhile, shot a blistering 5-under par 279 to jump out to a 17-stroke lead over Delaware (296).

Four of N.C. State’s players are among the top five, including Andrew Byrd (-4, 67) who holds one stroke lead over teammates Adam Hogue (-3, 68) and Hertzog Landman (-3, 68). Landman is participating in the tournament as an individual and his score does not count towards the Wolfpack’s team score. Delaware’s Jason Bernstein is the only non-N.C. State player in the top five. Bernstein is fourth with a 2-under par 69.

Navy, who is fielding four teams - Navy Blue, Navy Gold, Navy White and Navy Gray - in this weekend’s tournament, has just one player among the top 10 and three in the top 20. While Miller and Wielgus are pacing the Navy Blue squad with their 18th-place 4-over par 75, senior Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) finished the first round with the lowest score among all of the Navy competitors with a 2-over par 73 and is tied for eighth place. Sload is leading the way for the Navy Gold team which is just a stroke behind Navy Blue in seventh with a 20-over par 304. Meanwhile, team captain and two-time All-Patriot League performer Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.), along with sophomore Tyler Gulliksen (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and newcomer Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) are tied for 33rd with a 6-over par 77 for the gold team.

Spearheading the Navy White team is junior John Montemayor (Woodbridge, Va.), who is tied for 25th with a 5-over par 76 with teammate John Fischer (West Des Moines, Iowa) just a stroke back in 33rd. The Navy White team settled in at 13th following the opening round with a 31-over par 315. The Navy White team is within striking distance, as it is just five strokes behind Brown (+26, 310) who is in eighth.

Finally, the Navy Gray squad, made up of three sophomores and two freshmen, is in 16th place with a 37-over par 321. Second-year team member Michael Harrigan (Moorestown, N.J.) is the team’s low man of the day, posting a 7-over par 78 and placing 47th. Freshman Blaine Henning (Simonton, Texas) is next with a 9-over par 80.

PRINCETON, N.J. – Navy won three games by a combined score of 41-10 during the Princeton Invitational, sweeping past Gannon, Santa Clara and Fordham. The wins move Navy’s record to 6-1 overall.

In the day’s first game, 12 players scored goals in a 19-1 rout of Gannon. Senior Aaron Recko (San Antonio, Texas), playing in his first game of the season after missing last weekend, tallied five goals. Eric Gardiner (Upland, Calif.), Chuck Baker (Greenwich, Conn.) and freshman Luke Baldwin (La Grange Park, Ill.) scored a pair of goals each, while eight others scored one goal each in the rout. George Naughton (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and Steve Craney (La Crescenta, Calif.) made seven saves each, while splitting action in goal.

Navy led 5-0 after one quarter, stretched the lead to 11-0 at halftime, 14-0 after three quarters, before settling in for the 18-goal victory.

In the second game of the day, Navy breezed to an 11-5 win over No. 17-ranked Santa Clara. Three players, Bram Arnold (Lemoore, Calif.), Recko and Mike Mulvey (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored twice each, while five players recorded one goal each. Navy led 4-2 after one quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 11-5 after three quarters. Naughton made four saves, while Craney had three.

Mids Fall in Trident Classic Finale

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After winning a dramatic five-game marathon match against Marist, the Navy volleyball team stumbled in the finale of the Trident Classic Saturday night, losing a three-game decision to Central Connecticut State in what served as the title match of the two-day tournament.

“It was a very disappointing end to what was otherwise a strong weekend by us,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob of the match against CCSU.

The Mids improved to 2-0 during the tournament – Navy defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology in four games Friday night – with a 23-30, 30-21, 33-31, 27-30, 15-10 win over Marist Saturday afternoon.

The two teams took turns controlling games one (Marist) and two (Navy), which led to a very close game three. The Mids held advantages of 25-21, 28-25 and 29-26, but could not close the door on the Red Foxes. With Navy serving for the game at 29-26, Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) was blocked by Marist players on back-to-back plays to make the margin just one point, then a kill by Joanna Foss tied the score at 29-29. The Red Foxes then took a 30-29 lead following a service ace from Alexandra Schultze. She would then serve for the game, but Sims recorded a block of her own to tie the game at 30-30. A kill by Kelsey Schaefer gave Marist its third opportunity to serve for the game, which Navy wiped out when Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) posted a kill to the the game for the 11th time. Navy proceeded to receive a break when Marist was called for a ball-handling error on the proceeding play, then Sims knocked down her sixth kill of the game to give the Mids a 2-1 adv!

The Mids were again unable to hold onto a lead in game four, taking advantages of 26-24 and 27-25 before Marist scored the final five points of the game to even the match at two games apiece.

The Red Foxes carried that momentum over into the start of game five by quickly taking a 3-1 lead. A Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) kill gave the Mids a much needed sideout, then Sims served five-straight points to give Navy a 7-3 lead. Marist would soon pull to within two points at 8-6, but Navy went on a 6-1 run to open up a 14-7 lead. The Mids committed a service error and back-to-back attack errors before Sims ended the two hour, 20-minute match with a kill.

“After give up leads in several games, we were very happy to finally hold onto one in game five,” said Schwob. “We were able to find a nice rhythm on both offense and defense in the fifth game.”

Navy totaled 11 kills against just three attack errors in game five, while holding Marist to three kills and three hitting errors over the final game.

The Mids totaled 74 kills and a .191 attack percentage in the match, while the Red Foxes accrued 55 kills and a .152 hitting percentage. The only other sizeable statistical difference between the teams in the match came in service errors, where Navy totaled 17 to just six for Marist.

Dougherty led all players with 22 kills and a .304 hitting percentage, with Sims adding 19 kills and a match-high 18 digs. Also playing well on both offense and defense for Navy was Nikki England (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), who finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs.

With Central Connecticut State also winning its matches Friday night over Marist and Saturday morning in five games over NJIT, the final match of the tournament between the Mids and the Blue Devils would decide the tournament champion. CCSU would hold off a pair of late Navy rallies to claim first place at the Trident Classic with a 30-21, 30-27, 30-28 win over the Mids.

Navy took an early 7-4 advantage in game one, but the Blue Devils would score 10 of the next 11 points to open up a 14-8 lead. The Mids could pull no closer to CCSU than four points at 21-17 over the remainder of the game.

CCSU jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the second game before Navy slowly climbed back to within one point at 23-22. At that point the Blue Devils went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 28-22. After the teams traded sideouts, Navy overcame five match points for CCSU before a kill from Katie Karkow ended the game.

Game three was much of how the first two games went with Navy starting the slowly and having to work itself back into the game. The Mids were down 15-8 early on before rallying to tie the game at 23-23. Both teams tallied a sideout to make the score 24-24, then the Blue Devils quickly scored three-straight points on a kill, a service ace and a Navy attack error to open up a 27-24 lead. A service error by Amanda Olmstead returned the serve to Navy, then Krista Eschelman (So., Germantown, Md.) posted a kill for Navy to make the score 27-26. Eschelman was blocked to end the next play, but a ball-handling error by Amanda Bayer gave Navy the serve with the score 28-26. Navy gave CCSU a 29-27 lead when Dougherty recorded a service error, then Sims knocked down her ninth kill of the match to make the score 29-28. The contest ended when Meredith Biri (So., San Antonio, Texas) served into the middle of the net.

Errors, often unforced ones, was perhaps Navy’s undoing in the match. The Mids gave 29 points in the match on serving, receiving, blocking and ball-handling errors, while conversely, the Blue Devils gave Navy just 19 points on similar miscues.

Altogether in the match, CCSU outscored Navy by just 14 points (90-76).

“It was fitting that the last two Connecticut points of the match came by way of our unforced errors,” said Schwob. “It seemed every time we fought hard to get back into the game and give ourselves a great opportunity, our own play ended our rally. Having a better start to games and cleaning up what happens on our side of the net are two areas we must improve on before we start league play.”

Take away the errors, and the two teams played to a near standstill statistically. The Blue Devils recorded just three more kills (44-41), one more dig (46-45) and three more blocks (11-8) than Navy did.

Individually for the Mids, Gibbs totaled 10 kills and just one attack error on 16 swings for a .562 hitting percentage to lead the team in both categories. Dougherty tallied nine kills and five blocks over the 80-minute contest, while Sims finished with nine kills and 11 digs.

The loss ended a five-match winning streak for the Mids and dropped Navy’s record to 6-2 on the season. The Blue Devils, meanwhile, improved to 8-2 on the year with their two victories Saturday.

Navy’s 2-1 record on the weekend gave the Mids second-place in the Trident Classic standings, with NJIT placing third (1-2) and Marist fourth (0-3).

Navy will next be in action Tuesday when the Mids play at Saint Francis (Pa.).

BALTIMORE, Md. – St. Francis (N.Y.) scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to break open a tie game and handed the Navy men’s soccer team its first setback of the season, 3-1, on the final day of the UMBC Adidas Soccer Classic. The loss drops Navy’s record to 2-1-1 overall, heading into an off weekend.

“We didn’t play too well defensively, and didn’t get any breaks that we needed to get to win today,” said Navy head coach Rich Miranda. “Offensively, we played OK, but didn’t put away several chances in the first half that ultimately hurt us. We gave up two soft goals today, and that is discouraging. For us to be successful, we can’t give up any easy goals and we did that today.”

St. Francis took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute on a John Sallhag tally from six yards out. However, just as in Friday’s 2-1 win over Iona, Navy responded early in the second half. Senior Eric Gorden (Longwood, Fla.) played a ball in front to sophomore Andrew Garcia (Garland, Texas), who knocked home a shot in traffic from eight yards out to knot the game at one in the 60th minute.

Navy then appeared to take a 2-1 lead moments later, but a shot that beat St. Francis goalie Chris Antonio and found the back of the net, was waved off due to a foul away from the play on St. Francis. The ball was in mid-air while the whistle was blown, thus eliminating the Navy goal.

“That was a big call that went against us,” said Miranda. “There was a foul away from the play that the referee called away from the play, while we had a shot in the air going toward the goal. The whistle sounded before the ball crossed the plane of the goal. That would have been a big goal for us and gave us the lead with about 20 minutes to play. As big as a call as that was, it wasn’t the reason we lost the game though. We just weren’t sound enough defensively today.”

St. Francis then got the break it needed when Diego Martinez headed in a corner kick in the 76th minute for a 2-1 advantage, and Sesmo Nikocevic ended the scoring with a Terrier tally in the 87th minute.

Both teams recorded 13 shots on the day, with St. Francis drawing five corner kicks to Navy’s four. Navy committed 14 fouls to the Terriers’ 16. Evan Barnes (Dublin, Ohio) took the loss in goal for the Mids, stopping four shots on the afternoon.

Navy will now have 12 days off before its next contest, a Sept. 21 battle at Florida Gulf Coast University at 7:00 pm. Miranda says the break is much-needed.

“We are a relatively tired team right now,” said Miranda. “It has been pretty hot out and we have played four games (including two double-overtime games) in nine days, and we are entering a week with exams. It will be a very good break for us to prepare for the Patriot League and get us rejuvenated again. It will also give us a chance to look at our lineups more and see what adjustments can be made.”
