Navy Squash Sweeps Denison, Drops Heart-Breaker to Western Ontario
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Navy squash team split its results in its final two matches at Northwestern Saturday where it easily defeated Denison, 9-0, before dropping a tough 6-3 decision to Western Ontario. The Midshipmen earned a 2-1 record in their opening weekend of action and will be back in action in two weeks when they play host to the Navy Invitational on Nov. 9-11.

“We played a strong match against Denison and came back to lose a tough match against Western Ontario,” said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. “There were some good matches against Western Ontario, but we now know what we need to work on over the next couple of weeks to improve.”

First established in 1995, Navy is diligently working on evening its series with Denison as the Midshipmen have now won five in a row against the Big Red. Meanwhile, Navy and Western Ontario have met just three times with the inaugural meeting in February of 1992. The last time the two teams met up was in 1999 in Rochester, N.Y. Prior to Saturday’s contest, the prior two matches against the Mustangs had ended with the Mids winning just one of the nine matches in each.

Navy’s top three players on the ladder walked each won two matches, including Navy senior Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) who cruised to a 9-3, 9-2, 9-2 victory over Denison’s Asad Khan in the opener. However, he was forced to five games in his Western Ontario match against Chris Hanebury. George fell behind early, but came back to take a 2-1 lead after winning games two and three, 9-4 and 9-2, respectively. Hanebury forced a fifth game after beating George, 9-1, but George took the match with a 9-6 game five win.

Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.), Navy’s No. 2 player turned in a pair of 3-0 wins on the afternoon, defeating Ned Marks of Denison, 9-4, 9-2, 9-6, while posting a 9-4, 9-3, 9-4 win over Western Ontario’s Greg Hutner.

Also winning back-to-back three-game matches was team captain Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) at No. 3 who put away Denison’s Bilal Khan, 9-3, 9-2, 95, and Western Ontario junior Iain Crozier, 9-6, 9-2, 9-1.

Rookie Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) nearly swept his two opponents at No. 4, as he produced a 9-1, 9-6, 9-3 win over Denison’s Drew Snell before dropping a heart-breaker against his UWO foe. After dropping the opening two games, 9-7 and 9-2 against senior Ryan Osbourne, Lutz evened the match with a pair of 10-8 wins. It was Osbourne, however, who outlasted Lutz in the end, taking game five, 10-8.

Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) swept his Denison foe, Russell Holman, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, while freshman Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) and Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) each gave up just one point in their 3-0 wins over their Big Red opponents.

Colgate Capitalizes on Clearing Error, Shuts Out Navy Men’s Soccer Team

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite a solid defensive effort by a Navy team riddled with injuries, an error at midfield led to a Matt Leach goal in the 61st minute and a 1-0 Colgate victory over the Navy men’s soccer team Saturday night at Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y. Navy, who has played three of its last four contests on the road, is now 7-6-2, including an 0-5 mark in Patriot League play, while Colgate improves to 8-4-3 and is atop the league standings with its 4-0-1 record.

“It’s a disappointing loss especially when our guys played hard and left everything they had out on the field,” said Navy head coach Rich Miranda. "I felt like we really shut them out in the second half. We stuck to our gameplan and it worked. But in the game of soccer, if you make one small mistake, you risk being punished.

“I felt like this game would be a one-goal game and we just didn’t do a good enough job at midfield tonight. We’ve had to make a number of adjustments due to the injuries we’ve suffered, but even with the change in our back, we did a good job.”

The two teams played a scoreless opening half with Colgate outshooting the Midshipmen, 12-2. Despite the shot differential, Colgate put just two of its 12 shots on goal with Navy senior keeper Thomas Jenkins (Franklin, N.C.) warding off both shots to preserve the scoreless half.

Navy came out a more determined, disciplined ball club in the second stanza, as its offense maintained control of the ball and kept Colgate on its heels throughout the early minutes.

The Raiders finally found the back of the net after Navy struggled to clear the ball out of the midfield. Colgate senior Eric Anton took a shot from the left side, but his shot was stopped by the Mids and pushed up to the right side of the field. However, Colgate’s Chris Ross took control of the ball and sent it towards the goal where it deflected off a defender and was tapped into the right side of the goal by Leach at the 60:21 mark.

Minutes later, Navy nearly knotted the game up when senior Travis King’s (Loveland, Ohio) shot just skipped over the cross bar. With just under 14 minutes to play, the Mids’ throw-in made its way into the box and was batted around before Colgate finally kicked the ball out of play.

Navy kept coming after Colgate, this time with eight minutes to play. Sophomore defender Matt Tapajcik (Alexandria, Va.) sent a shot to the cage that was blocked by Colgate and deflected over to Navy rookie forward Mike Porcelli (West Islip, N.Y.). Porcelli gathered the ball and fired off a low shot that was scooped up by Colgate keeper David Cappuccio.

Colgate ended the game with an 18-12 shots advantage and turned in a 6-0 advantage in corners. The Raiders also owned an 11-5 fouls edge over the Midshipmen.

The Midshipmen will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Easton, Pa. to battle Lafayette, who is tied with Holy Cross for third place in the Patriot League with a 2-1-2 record. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Friday, October 26, 2007) - Navy’s ice hockey team kept it close for two periods, but the University of Rhode Island scored three unanswered third period goals to break open a close game en route to a 6-2 victory over the Midshipmen Friday night before an estimated crowd of 400 at the McMullen Hockey Arena in Annapolis.

With the loss, Navy’s record dropped to 5-5 overall and 0-5 in the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL). URI, meantime, is now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the ESCHL. Rhode Island is currently ranked #3 in the nation in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) poll. Navy was ranked #19 in that same poll, which was released before last weekend’s home-and-home series with Drexel.

The same two teams meet again Saturday at 11 a.m., immediately following a formal 9:30 a.m. dedication ceremony for the Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex - the facility which includes the McMullen Hockey Arena.

Navy actually broke on top Friday night when junior defenseman Matt Swezey found senior Nick Schwob alone in front of the URI goal, and Schwob fired a shot past Ram goaltender Andrew Lisi at the 16:56 mark to put the Mids ahead, 1-0.

Rhode Island grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second stanza, thanks to a pair of shorthanded goals within 10 seconds of each other -* the first from Peter Ducharme at 3:48 and the second from James Gaffney at 3:58.

The Midshipmen pulled even later in the period when Swezey recorded an unassisted power play goal at 15:32. But the visiting Rams took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission, thanks to a Ben Herring power play goal with just 6.4 seconds showing on the McMullen Hockey Arena scoreboard clock.

URI put the game away in the third period with three unanswered goals: Cory Manley at 1:57, Matt Wodecki at 6:02, and Manley again at 10:43.

Navy head coach Mike Fox pulled sophomore goaltender Eric Anderson with less than a minute left in the third period and the Mids enjoying a 5-on-3 power play, but Navy was unable to get a third goal. The otherwise well played game was marred by several penalties in the game¹s final two minutes, resulting from “chippy” play and numerous skirmishes between the two rivals.

Anderson finished the night with 45 saves, while his counterpart Lisi recorded 37, as the Rams outshot the Mids by a 51-39 margin.

Saturday morning’s 9:30 a.m. dedication ceremony is expected to draw USNA Superintendent Vice Admiral Jeffery L. Fowler and NAAA Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk, among a host of other distinguished officials, supporters, alumni, and guests.

NAVY NIPPED BY URI, 5-4,

WILL HOST PENN STATE NEXT WEEKEND

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Saturday, October 27, 2007) * On a very special day for the Navy ice hockey program, the Midshipmen played one of their better games of the season but fell just short of upsetting the University of Rhode Island, dropping a 5-4 decision to the #3 ranked Rams at the McMullen Hockey Arena.

Just prior to the game, U.S. Naval Academy and Naval Academy Athletic Association brass formally dedicated the Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex, which houses the McMullen Hockey Arena. Not only did the Midshipmen formally unveil their new rink, they also sported colorful new uniforms for the second consecutive game.

But the special fanfare wasn’t quite enough to propel Navy to their first win in the newly created Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL). Instead, the Mids fell to 5-6 overall and 0-6 in the ESCHL, while Rhode Island improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the new league.

Navy got off to a great start in the rare Saturday morning clash, getting a power play goal from defenseman Matt Gross at 16:14, the lone assist going to senior Nick Schwob. The game was stopped momentarily to grab the puck for Schwob, because that assist earned the likeable senior a spot in the Navy Hockey Program¹s prestigious 100-Point Club.

Down 1-0, Rhode Island pulled even just before the first period ended, thanks to a Jon Biliouris even strength tally with only 17 seconds showing on the scoreboard clock.

URI picked up a pair of early second period goals from Stephen Gaffney – the first coming at 3:47 and the second at 8:17 – to take a 3-1 lead.

The resilient Midshipmen struck back a short time later when Schwob earned his 101st career point with an unassisted goal at 10:20, and Navy knotted the score at 3-3 when senior defenseman Adam Shields recorded a power play goal at 16:03, the assists going to classmate Brian Gleason and junior Jeff Martin.

Rhode Island once again demonstrated its knack for scoring a key goal late in a period, getting Gaffney¹s third tally of the game at 18:18 to give the visiting Rams a 4-3 advantage entering the third period.

The Rams then increased their lead to 5-3 when Gaffney scored his fourth goal of the day midway through the final stanza, at 9:18.

But Navy fought back once again to pull within one when senior defenseman Donnie Horner scored an unassisted, even strength goal at the 17:54 mark.

The Midshipmen peppered URI goaltender Ray Martin with several quality shots in the game¹s final two minutes, especially in the final 40 seconds when Navy¹s coaches pulled sophomore netminder Eric Anderson for an extra attacker. Although the Mids were unable to get the equalizer, they demonstrated that despite their current league record, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the ESCHL in the months and years ahead.

Anderson finished with 37 saves on 42 URI shots, while Martin was credited with 39 saves on 43 Navy shots on goal.

Unlike Friday night’s penalty filled game, referee Henry White called only seven infractions Saturday – four against the Mids and three against the Rams.

Navy is in action again next weekend, when perennial powerhouse Penn State pays a visit to the McMullen Hockey Arena for a pair of 7:30 p.m. games on Friday, November 2 and Saturday, November 3.

Navy Soccer Remains Unbeaten at Home, Defeats Holy Cross, 2-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After playing five of its last six games on the road, the Navy women’s soccer team returned home to the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility Sunday where it handed Patriot League foe Holy Cross a 2-0 loss. The Mids, who improve to 9-4-4 overall and 2-1-2 in conference action, are unbeaten at home this season where they own a 6-0-1 record.

“It’s nice to get back home and play in front of our fans,” said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. “We’ve been working hard on generating more scoring opportunities and we did a good job of that today. We have to keep our focus and intensity up over the next week as we are fighting for a spot in the league playoffs.”

Seeing the sun for the first time in days, both teams instead were forced to fight off constant wind gusts. Though Navy would be forced to against the wind in the first half, it took less than three minutes for the Mids to get on the board. Junior defender Carey Young (Virginia Beach, Va.) sent a perfect ball from the endline to the center of the box where team captain Kari Weniger (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was there to fire in the two-yard shot and score her first goal of the year.

The Mids put five of their 10 shots on goal in the opening half, including a hard-driven shot by Young with 39 minutes remaining that was pulled out of the air by Holy Cross keeper Jessica Pietrowicz. With less than five minutes left in the half, junior forward Sam Schroth (Chester Springs, Pa.) took a shot from less than 10 yards out, but as the keeper came charging out, the ball ricocheted off and out of the box.

While the Mids put 10 shots on the scoreboard, Holy Cross got off just three shots.

Navy once again dominated possession on the offensive side of the field where it produced a 14-2 advantage in shots, peppering back-up keeper Jessica Stone. The Mids added an insurance goal 12 minutes into the second half when senior Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) pulled Stone to the far right post as Fox looked to score, but instead sent the ball over to Weniger who tapped it into the left corner for her second goal of the game.

Just minutes after Weniger’s goal, Fox tried her best effort to get her name in the scoring column, blasting a 15-yard shot that was punched out by a leaping Stone.

The Midshipmen finished the game with a 24-5 shots advantage, as Pietrowicz and Stone combined to make 10 saves for the Crusaders. Navy keeper Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) stopped three shots on goal, including a shot with 26 minutes remaining in the game when she punched a Kaitlyn Friday shot out as it nearly skimmed the cross bar.

With one week remaining in the regular season, the race for a Patriot League Tournament bid remains tight. Bucknell and American are assured a spot in the four-team conference tournament slated to be held Nov. 9 and 11 at the site of the highest seed. That site will be determined next Saturday when the Bison travel to Washington D.C. to face American at 12:00 pm.

Meanwhile, Army stands third with a 3-1-1 record and 10 points, followed by Colgate (3-3-0, 9 pts) in fourth, Navy (2-1-2, 8 pts) in fifth and Lehigh (2-3-1, 7 pts) in sixth. With the postponement of last Friday’s Army-Navy soccer game due to the field being under water, the game has been rescheduled for Monday, Nov 5, at 4:00 pm in Annapolis. It is possible that game could decide the final two spots in the tournament.

Navy will take a break from conference action on Tuesday when they play host to Howard. Action is set for 7:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Admission for Tuesday’s contest will be offered for a special $2 ticket.

Navy Wins Princeton Chase

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Navy lightweight crew team enjoyed a successful conclusion to its fall season of racing Sunday when the program’s varsity boat won the Princeton Chase held on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.

Navy’s top crew posted a time of 13:22.052 to win the head race by 1.6 seconds. Cornell placed second in the contest with a time of 13:23.693, while regatta-host Princeton finished in third place with a time of 13:23.926.

Additionally in the varsity eight race, Navy crews also placed 11th, 13th and 21st in the field of 29 entries.

“It is pretty exciting for our team,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich of the victory. "This is the first time Navy has won the event, and to do so over all of our conference opponents except for Harvard (who did not compete) shows what a great accomplishment this is.

“The guys had a great row (to win the race). They paced themselves well and had a good finish. Rowing a complete race was something we were not able to do last week at the Head of the Charles.”

The Mids also entered four boats into the foar-oared race, with their top boat finishing in third place with a time of 15:01.729. Princeton won the race with a clocking of 14:48.007, with Dartmouth placing second in a time of 14:58.099.

Navy crews also placed 11th, 14th and 18th in the race that featured 31 boats.

“We had some great rows in our fours, as well,” said Friedrich.

“Overall, this was a wonderful showing for our program and will make for a great atmosphere of training over the next few months for our spring season.”

Mids Take Break from Conference Action, Battle Howard on Tuesday ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Fresh off its 2-0 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday, the Navy women’s soccer team (9-4-4) will take a break from Patriot League action when it plays host to Howard (2-14) on Tuesday at 7:00 pm. The Midshipmen are unbeaten
at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility this season, turning in a 6-0-1 record.

After playing three straight games on the road and five of its previous six, Navy settled in at home on Sunday against the Crusaders in what was the first of a four-game homestand for the Midshipmen. Team captain Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.) wasted little time in getting Navy on the scoreboard, taking a Carey Young (Virginia Beach, Va.) cross and threading it past the Holy Cross keeper. She tacked on her second goal of the day in the 58th minute to lead the Mids to a 2-0 win, the team’s eighth shutout of the 2007 campaign.

Weniger is one of six different players who have recorded game-winning goals for the Midshipmen this season. Senior forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) is atop the list, scoring seven goals this season, including three game-winners. Young, a junior defender for the Mids, has produced a pair of goals this fall
with both going down in the record books as game-winners.

The Midshipmen have outscored their opponents by 10 (26-16) and taken nearly double the shots with a 279-145 advantage. Navy’s defense is giving up 0.89 goals per game, while junior keeper Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) is making stops on 73.8 percent of the shots she has seen.

Tuesday’s contest marks the final regular-season game of the year for Howard who will travel to Orem, Utah next Wednesday to play in the United Soccer Conference Tournament. The Bison have turned in a 2-14 record this season with both wins, a 1-0 win over Delaware State and a 2-0 win over South Carolina State, coming in conference action. Howard dropped its first 10 games before defeating Delaware State on Oct. 12. Heading into their game against the Midshipmen, the Bison have lost three in row.

Howard has been outscored 73-12 this fall and outshot 289-136. The Bison are allowing 4.58 goals per game and have stopped 59.9 percent of the shots they have faced. Junior forward Natalie Williston is Howard’s top scoring, posting nine points on a pair of goals and five assists. Rookie forward Rachael Lee
owns six points off two goals and two assists, while classmate Briana Gamble has also scored a pair of goals and added an assist. Junior Jessamyn Perkins has handled the goalkeeping duties for the Bison. She has given up 69 of the 73 goals (4.41 GAA) and made 107 of the 109 saves (.608).

Navy owns a 5-0 series advantage, including a 4-0 record in Annapolis, while outscoring the Bison 32-3. Last year the Mids scored a program-record 10 goals in the opening half to defeat Howard, 10-0, in Annapolis.

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – The Collegiate Water Polo Association has announced the selection of Johns Hopkins University’s Sean McCreery and Navy’s George Naughton (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) as Southern Division Co-Players of the Week for their performance during the period of October 15-21.

Naughton was near-perfect last week recording 68 saves and allowing 37 goals as the No.11-ranked Midshipmen knocked off George Washington (16-4), Princeton (14-8), Air Force (10-7), Harvard (7-5), Johns Hopkins (11-7) and Brown (7-6) to finish 8-0 in CWPA Southern Division play and clinch the No. 1 seed for the Southern Division Championship this coming weekend in Annapolis.

This year he has recorded 247 saves, already the fifth-highest total in school history, as he now has 714 career saves to rank second all-time, just 38 saves shy of tying Joe Alton’s (1993-96) school record.

The Mids are 22-5 this year, and are currently on a 12-game winning streak, which is tied the for the seventh-longest streak in school history. Navy has now won at least 22 games in five of the last six seasons and looks for their third Southern Division Championship in a row this weekend in Annapolis.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy senior men’s basketball player Greg Sprink has been named to the preseason first-team All-Patriot League by several publications, including Sporting News, Athlon’s and Lindy’s. Earlier in the month, he was selected by Patriot League coaches and sports information directors as a preseason first-team All-Patriot League selection, the first such honor for a Navy men’s basketball player since Chris Williams in 2000-01.

Sprink, a 6-5, 220-pound forward from Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., became the first Navy player to lead the league in scoring, averaging 16.9 ppg (17.9 ppg in the Patriot League) in all games played. He currently ranks 16th on the school’s career scoring list (1,132 points) and ranks in the top 10 in six other career
categories. He is on pace to become just the third player in school history to score 1,000 points, grab 500 rebounds and dish out 200 assists in a career, joining past Navy greats Vernon Butler (1983-86) and Kevin Sinnett (1976-79). Sprink will also likely become the school record-holder in nearly every category in Patriot League games.

Meanwhile, the Blue Ribbon Yearbook has given Navy’s backcourt a grade of B+, the highest ranking dealt out among all eight Patriot League backcourts (along with Bucknell). The Mids return six of seven backcourt players that saw significant action last year, and brought in a pair of skilled freshmen in Greg Brown (Waldorf, Md.) and Romeo Garcia (Cypress, Texas).

Navy opens the season on Nov. 9, at Longwood in Farmville, Va., with tip time slated for 7:30 pm. The Mids’ home opener will be Nov. 14, against Northeast Conference preseason favorite Robert Morris. For ticket information, please call 1-800-US4-NAVY.

Three Mids Garner League Swimming & Diving Accolade

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For the second time in as many weeks, three members of the Navy swimming and diving teams received weekly accolades from the Patriot League. Earning diver-of-the-week nods were Katie Griffin (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Olaf Olson (Fr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.), while Adam Meyer (So.,
Bethesda, Md.) was tabbed as the men’s swimmer of the week.

Griffin and Olson each received the honor for the second consecutive week. Griffin, who was tabbed as the top female diver in the league for the 15th time in her career this week, won both boards during last week’s dual meet at UMBC. She posted a score of 276.53 on the one meter to win the board by 49 points, then scored 307.43 points to win the three meter by 53 points.

The defending league champion in both diving events, Griffin improved her combined dual meet record to 10-0 this season and to 31-1 since the start of the 2006-07 season.

Olson, meanwhile, tallied a score of 288.90 to win the one-meter event during the men’s meet at UMBC by 15 points, then accrued 302.03 points to win the three meter by nearly 27 points. He improved to 9-1 on the season with the pair of victories.

Earning the first weekly honor of his career was Meyer. The 2007 Patriot League champion in the 200 individual medley won a trio of events last Saturday against the Retrievers. He recorded a time of 1:54.04 to win the 200 IM, a 1:53.00 to win the 200 fly and a 2:09.72 to win the 200 breaststroke. Meyer’s combined margin of victories in the three races was nearly 12 seconds.

Meyer has now posted victories in 11 of his 14 individual event races this fall.

Both Navy programs improved to 5-0 on the season with their respective victories over UMBC. The Navy men will not compete in a meet this week, while the women’s team will race against both Colgate and Lehigh Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa.

Fox Scores Four in Navy Women’s Soccer Win over Howard

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) scored a school-record tying four goals to lead the Navy women’s soccer team to an 8-1 victory over Howard Tuesday evening at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis. The win pushed Navy’s record to 10-4-4, marking the 13th-consecutive season in which the Midshipmen have won 10 or more games.

“Brigitte played a phenomenal game tonight,” said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "She did a great job of creating scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball and putting her in the position to score. I was pleased with her ability to finish.

“It was nice to see so many of our players getting the opportunity to contribute tonight both offensively and defensively. We had 12 different players with a goal or an assist which is an impressive stat that displays our balance. It was a great team effort tonight.”

Fox produced Navy’s first two goals of the game (15th, 18th) and the first two goals in the second half (46th, 47th) en route to becoming only the third different player in the program’s 15-year history to score four goals in a game. In 1994, Cori Thornton became the first player in school history to score four goals, while Amelia Sheveland accomplished the feat twice, once in 2000 and again in 2002. Fox has now scored three or more goals in a game twice in her career (3 vs. Colgate in 2006).

Five Navy players accounted for the Mids’ eight goals, while an additional seven players were credited with assists. In addition to Fox, sophomore defender Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio) and junior forward Sam Schroth (Chester Springs, Pa.) knocked in goals. Meanwhile freshmen Jessica Grupp (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and Carissa Youker (Potomac, Md.) each scored their first collegiate goals. Sixteen different players have now scored goals for the Midshipmen this fall, while an additional four have jumped into the scoring column by turning in assists.

Navy utilized three different goalkeepers throughout the game, including senior Rachel Tarbox (Upper Arlington, Ohio) who earned her first collegiate start, while rookie Eowyn Pedicini (Los Alamos, N.M.) saw her first minutes in goal this season.

Navy owned a 6-0 lead before Howard put its goal up on the board in the 69th minute. Freshman Briana Gamble fed fellow newcomer Rachael Lee, who appeared to be offside, up the middle. While the Navy defense hesitated, Lee charge forward and sent a rainbow shot over the outstretched hands of Navy sophomore Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) who played the entire second half in goal for the Midshipmen.

Navy ended the game by putting 18 of its 36 shots on goal, while holding the Bison to eight shots, including four on goal. Howard keeper Jessamyn Perkins made 10 saves, while Navy’s three keepers combined to top three Bison shots.

The Midshipmen will continue their homestand on Saturday when they play host to Colgate in a critical Patriot League contest. With both teams vying one of the final two spots in the Patriot League Tournament in two weeks, each team controls its own destiny. If Navy defeats Colgate, the Mids are in the tournament, however, if they lose, they are at the mercy of their archrival, Army. Saturday’s contest is slated for 1:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Navy is running several promotions on Saturday, including:

Green and Reifenberg Earn CSFL Weekly Kudos

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy sprint football quarterback D.J. Green (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) and kicker David Reifenberg (So./Ft. Wayne, Ind.) have been selected as the CSFL Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday morning.

The Midshipmen (5-0, 3-0 CSFL) clinched at least a share of the CSFL title with their 56-7 win over Penn last Friday. Navy has now claimed 32 league crowns in its 62-year program history, the most among any team in league history.

On a rainy Friday evening at Franklin Field, Green completed 14-of-27 pass attempts for 178 yards with a pair of first-quarter scoring strikes. The Navy signal-caller also delivered for the Mids with 68 rushing yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns.

Green has completed 44-of-76 passes for 674 yards on the year with six touchdowns and only two interceptions. On the ground, he has run for 122 yards on 29 attempts with five touchdowns.

For Green, this represents the second time this year that he has been tabbed the league’s offensive player of the week. He previously earned the weekly honors following a two-touchdown performance against defending league champion Cornell in the Pride Bowl on Oct. 7.

Reifenberg converted on all eight of his extra-point attempts in the win over Penn on Friday, tied for the third-most by an individual in school history. The Navy kicker has made 32 consecutive extra-point attempts and ranks second on the school’s single-season extra points made list, only two shy of breaking Jaesen Van Yerger’s record of 33 conversions during the 1994 season.

For Reifenberg, this marks the fourth time this season that he has been recognized as the league’s kicker of the week. He previously earned the award following his performance against Frostburg State (5 XP, 2 FG), Army (3 XP, 2 FG) and Princeton (11 XP, 2 FG).

Navy will attempt to capture its 25th outright CSFL title and the N-Star for the fourth-consecutive year on Friday night when it travels up to Shea Stadium in West Point to take on Army (2-4, 1-2 CSFL). The Midshipmen own a 34-30-1 all-time advantage over the Black Knights and have won seven-consecutive contests against their service academy foe.

John Kress Named Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For his efforts in the classroom and on the trails, Navy runner John Kress (Sr./Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been recognized as the 2007 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Kress becomes the first Navy runner to earn the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year kudos in men’s cross country since joining the league in 2003.

“In a league that prides itself on four-year degrees and academia, I am sure that John’s folks are quite proud of him, as am I.” stated Navy head coach Al Cantello. “He has grown into a man this year. After overcoming mono last spring, he has been a leader by example. Reticent to a fault, but a dogged leader.”

This year’s team captain, Kress earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors for the second-straight year after finishing fifth at the league championship last Saturday. He has boasted Navy’s fastest time in two races this season and been among the squad’s top-two runners in all six races he has raced in this fall. Kress has finished among the overall top-10 runners in five of his six meets in 2007, four of which he landed in the top five.

During the Navy Invitational on Sept. 15, Kress produced the 14th-fastest Navy time in USNA Cross Country Course history with a blistering 24:14.9 clocking. His effort was only 27.1 seconds off the school record held by Ron Harris (23:47.8) during the 1986 campaign.

In the classroom, Kress ranks 85th out of his class of 1,085 midshipmen with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average while majoring in aerospace engineering. The native of Colorado Springs, Colo., has been honored on the Superintendent’s List four times during his career and on the Commandant’s List in each of his first-six semesters in Annapolis. The two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member has earned a 4.0 semester grade point average three times over his first-three years.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.

Kress and the Midshipmen, ranked eighth in the region by the USTFCCCA, return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship in Bethlehem, Pa.

Navy Sprint Football: Mids Look to Claim N-Star, Outright CSFL Title at Army on Friday

Date: Friday, Nov. 2, 2007
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m.
Stadium: Shea Stadium (2,000)
Surface: AstroTurf
City: West Point, N.Y.
All-Time Series: Navy leads, 34-30-1
Streak: Navy, 7
Last Meeting: Navy 30, Army 17 (Sept. 22, 2007; Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)

Navy Looks to Capture N-Star, CSFL Outright Title at Army on Friday

The Navy sprint football team (5-0, 3-0 CSFL) aims to claim the N-Star and win its 25th outright CSFL Championship in program history this Friday night when it travels up to Shea Stadium in West Point to take on Army (2-4, 1-2 CSFL). The Midshipmen topped the Black Knights in the first meeting between the two teams, 30-17, at the Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. This year’s Navy senior class will also look to maintain its perfect record against service academy foe Army, as it has compiled a 7-0 mark.

Navy Defeats Penn, 56-7, in Battle of League’s Unbeatens

Navy sprint football quarterback D.J. Green (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Midshipmen topped Penn, 56-7, in a contest between the league’s top-two teams on Friday evening at Franklin Field.

The Midshipmen maintained their perfect record on the year, as they improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in CSFL play. The Quakers suffered their first league loss of the year to fall to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in league action.

With Friday night’s victory, the Midshipmen captured at least a share of the CSFL Championship this year, their 32nd league title in the program’s 62-year history. Navy will battle Army (2-4, 1-2 CSFL) in the Star Game next Friday night for a chance to claim the league crown outright, while Penn needs to defeat Princeton (0-5, 0-3 CSFL) and a Navy loss to Army in order to share the CSFL title with the Mids.

Despite the rainy conditions, Green engineered an offense that accumulated 553 yards and 26 first downs. Through the air, Green connected on 14-of-27 passes for 178 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Navy signal caller also used his legs to collect a career-best 68 yards on the ground via 13 carries with two touchdowns.

Accounting for 370 of its 553 yards on Friday was Navy’s rushing attack, which came into the contest averaging a league-best 287.5 yards per game. Richard Engel (Sr./Medford, N.J.) led the Midshipmen with 111 yards on 22 carries and found the endzone in the second quarter. Engel’s rushing touchdown upped his career total to 23, matching the program record held by Matt Sobecki (1994-97). Fellow running backs Enrique Harris (Jr./Crawfordville, Fla.), Nate Stewart (So./Fitzgerald, Ga.) and Steve Benson (So./Ellenwood, Ga.) all scored touchdowns and ran for 76, 63 and 53 yards, respectively.

Navy’s defense, which came into Friday’s game leading the CSFL in total defense (166.8 yards per game) and scoring defense (9.8 points per game), held Penn’s offense to 121 yards, only 35 in the second half, and forced four turnovers. The Mids recorded eight tackles in the backfield, three sacks and three pass breakups. The CSFL’s leading rusher, Rob Lombardi, was contained for just one yard in 15 carries by the Midshipmen defense.

Last Meeting … Navy 30, Army 17

Navy sprint football running back Enrique Harris (Jr./Crawfordville, Fla.) ran for 160 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown to earn game MVP honors as the Midshipmen defeated Army, 30-17, in front of 4,000 fans at the Allegiance Bowl at Saratoga Springs High School Field.

The Midshipmen held a 38:31-21:29 advantage in time of possession and out-gained Army, 417-332, with 313 of those yards coming on the ground. In addition to Harris’s 160 yards, Richard Engel (Sr./Medford, N.J.) produced 90 yards on 21 carries and Nate Stewart (So./Fitzgerald, Ga.) chimed in with 41 yards on seven rushing attempts.

Navy’s defense took advantage of six Army turnovers, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries, in scoring 23 of its 30 points on the afternoon. The Midshipmen also tallied six tackles for a loss of 19 yards and deflected away six passes in the win. Jason Feipel (Sr./Walcott, Iowa) led the defensive backfield with two pickoffs, the first two of his career, for 21 return yards.

In his first-career start, quarterback Jon DeWitt (Jr./Mendham, N.J.) produced a touchdown on the ground and through the air. The Navy signal-caller rushed for 18 yards and completed 6-of-22 passes for 104 yards.

Doubling Up Army

Navy will look to claim its second victory over Army this season on Friday night, as the Midshipmen defeated the Black Knights, 30-17, at the Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Sept. 22. Navy has recorded two victories over Army in one season on six occasions (1992, ‘97, ‘02, ‘04, ‘05 and ‘06), four of which have taken place over the last-five years.

Navy’s Seniors Going For 8-0 Against Army

This year’s Navy sprint football senior class will attempt to become the first class in program history to go undefeated against Army over its four years in Annapolis. The Midshipmen have won each of their last-seven meetings against the Black Knights, dating back to the 2004 campaign. The only other class to go undefeated against Army in its career was Navy’s senior class of 1962, as it won all three of its meetings against Army between 1959-61 during a time in which freshmen were not allowed to play in varsity competition.

Navy Reaches 300 All-Time Wins

The Navy sprint football program recorded its 300th victory in program history on Sunday, Oct. 7, when it defeated Cornell, 35-14, in Pride Bowl XXIX. The 62-year old program owns an all-time mark of 302-62-9, good for an .822 winning percentage.

Road Warriors

The Midshipmen played their only home game of the 2007 season against Princeton on Oct. 19, recording an 83-0 victory. The one home contest ranks as the fewest home games played in a season by the Mids in the program’s 62-year history.

Meanwhile, Navy will travel more than 2,300 miles on the road and spend in excess of 40 hours on a bus going to and from its five games away from Annapolis this year.

Leading the CSFL in Offense AND Defense

The Midshipmen have produced a total team effort in 2007, leading the CSFL in total offense and total defense. Navy’s offense tops the league with 50.2 points per game, 491.2 yards per contest and 304.0 rushing yards per game. On the defensive side of the ball, the Midshipmen lead the league with 9.2 points allowed per game, 157.6 yards allowed per outing and 36.6 rushing yards per contest.

In CSFL games only, Navy’s paces the league with 58.0 points per game, 524.3 yards per contest and 341.0 rushing yards per outing. Defensively, the Mids lead the CSFL with 7.0 points allowed per outing, 140.0 yards allowed per contest and 51.0 rushing yards per game.

Engel Ties Career Rushing Touchdowns Record

Navy senior running back Richard Engel (Medford, N.J.) recorded his 23rd career rushing touchdown in a win at Penn on Oct. 26, to tie the career program record with Matt Sobecki (1994-97). He has scored at least one touchdown in seven of his last-eight games, three of which were multi-touchdown performances.

Reifenberg Connecting on Kicks

Navy kicker David Reifenberg (So./Ft. Wayne, Ind.) has etched his name in the single-game record book at Navy this season for extra points and field goals made. Reifenberg went 11-for-11 in extra-point attempts during Navy’s 83-0 win over Princeton on Oct. 19. Against Army in the Allegiance Bowl, he tied the school record with three field goals made in a 30-17 victory.

Reifenberg’s name has also began to appear in the single-season lists in both categories. His 32 converted extra points rank second, while his seven field goals are fourth in program history.

Navy’s 1-2 Rushing Tandem … Engel and Harris

Navy’s league-leading rushing attack has been keyed by the efforts of its top-two running backs, Richard Engel (Sr./Medford, N.J.) and Enrique Harris (Jr./Crawfordville, Fla.). The Midshipmen rushing duo have combined for 745 yards and eight touchdowns on 122 carries this year (6.1 ypc). Engel, last year’s league rushing leader, is second in the CSFL with his 383 yards on the ground, while Harris owns 362 yards this season to rank right behind his teammate for third in the league.

You’ll Have Nothing and Like It

Navy’s defense has been downright dominating against opposing offenses this season, with two efforts ranking among the best defensive performances in school history. The Midshipmen held Frostburg State JV to a program record -34 yards rushing and 36 yards of total offense, the second-best mark in school history. Against Princeton on Oct. 19, the Midshipmen contained the Tigers to 17 rushing yards, sixth-best in program history, and 60 yards of total offense, the fifth-best mark in school history.

Domination on Both Sides of the Ball

While the Navy defense has controlled the opposition on offense, the Midshipmen offense has rolled, recording three of the school’s four-largest yardage differentials in school history this year. The Mids opened the year by out-gaining Frostburg State JV by 430 yards, 466-36, in a 47-8 win on Sept. 9. Against Princeton on Oct. 19, the Midshipmen produced a 490-yard difference in offense, 550-60, in cruising to an 83-0 victory. Last week at Penn, Navy out-gained its hosts by 432 yards, 553-121, in a convincing 56-7 win.

Stifling Defense

In their last 60 games, the Midshipmen defense has held the opposition to 20 or fewer points on 47 occasions, coming away victorious in 46 of those contests. Prior to a 16-10 setback in overtime last season at Cornell, the last time Navy lost a game in which its defense yielded less than 21 points came on Oct. 23, 1998, dropping a 17-14 decision to Penn.

The Midshipmen have come away victorious in 43-straight games in which they score over 30 points. Navy has surpassed the 30-point mark in four of its five games this season and in 43 of its last-84 games.

Team Scoring Streak

Navy has put points on the scoreboard in each of its last 117 games, scoring in double figures in 106 of those contests. The Midshipmen have not been shut out in a game since dropping a 12-0 decision at Princeton on Oct. 21, 1989.

Game Decided by 14+ Points, Advantage Navy

Navy has won each of the last-31 games decided by 14 or more points, dating back to its 42-10 victory over Cornell on Oct. 14, 2001, in the Pride Bowl only 42 games ago.

Five Years, Five Different Starting Quarterbacks

For the fifth-consecutive year, Navy has relied on a different starting quarterback. Despite the annual turnover at the position, the Midshipmen have gone 29-2 over that span, good for a .935 winning percentage. Of the previous four starting quarterbacks, three have earned all-league honors and one (Brian Nagle, 2004) was named the league MVP.

Navy Volleyball on the Road This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy volleyball team will attempt to climb closer to the Patriot League playoffs this weekend when the Midshipmen take to the road for matches against Colgate and Bucknell. The Mids will face the Raiders Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y, then will take on the Bison Saturday at 5 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.

Only four matches remain in the Patriot League season and the Mids are clinging to the fourth and final spot in the postseason with a 5-5 record. Navy enters the week standing one match ahead of Bucknell and two in front of sixth-place Lafayette.

American and Colgate are tied for first place in the Patriot League with 9-1 records, with the two teams slated to face each other Saturday night. Meanwhile, Army is in third place in the standings with an 8-2 record in league play.

“As long as we win, we don’t have to pay attention to the many playoff scenarios,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “To do so, we will have to step up our game from what it has been the last two weeks. The effort has been there, but we need the execution level to match in order to be successful.”

The Mids had their opportunity to defeat Colgate the first time the teams met in Annapolis, but squandered a 2-0 lead in games in an eventual 29-31, 27-30, 30-26, 30-23, 15-13 loss. Navy held a .325-.224 advantage in hitting percentage in games one and two, but Colgate posted a .253-.184 advantage over the final three games.

Individually, Navy’s Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) paced all players with 22 kills in the match, with teammates Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) and Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) adding 20 and 17 kills, respectively. Dougherty also added a Navy-best 15 digs, with Krista Eschelman (So., Germantown, Md.) contributing eight blocks.

Casey Ritt (20), Katrina Zawojski (19) and Merryl Pohl (18) combined for 57 of Colgate’s 77 kills on the night, while Zawojski also added a match-high 20 digs.

Navy recorded a 30-27, 30-20, 30-28 victory over Bucknell when the teams played each other earlier this season in Macdonough Hall. The Mids held slim advantages of 48-45 in kills, .280-.230 in hitting percentage and 40-36 in digs over the Bison, while Bucknell tallied 5.0 team blocks to Navy’s 4.0 in the match. The one area in which there was a noticeable statistical difference between the squads was in serving where the Mids tallied eight service aces and the Bison finished with just two.

Jenna Henderson led all players with 18 kills on the night, but she was the lone Bison to reach double figures. In contrast, Dougherty (16), Sims (13) and Gibbs (10) all reached double digits for Navy. The Mids also were balanced on defense with six players hauling in at least five digs in the match, while Henderson and Jennifer Rupp both grabbed 11 digs for Bucknell.

Navy Women’s Crew Squad to Close Fall Varsity Season Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s crew program will attempt to conclude its 2007 fall season the same way it closed its 2006 fall campaign by winning the Head of the Occoquan Regatta Saturday afternoon. Racing at the event will be held over a 5,000-meter course located on the Occoquan Reservoir in Sandy Run State State Park in Fairfax, Va.

The Mids placed first, third and sixth in last year’s collegiate eight race, first and second in the collegiate novice race and seventh in the collegiate four race.

“This is a long race, so we will need a strong, clean row in order to place ourselves in a position to win,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. “An added challenge for us is that we will be the first boat off the line, so we will not have another boat to pace ourselves against.”

This will be Navy’s first competition since its varsity boat placed 17th overall and 14th among U.S. colleges at the Head of the Charles Regatta held Oct. 21 in Boston. The program was slated to take part in last week’s Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, but poor weather forced the cancellation of the event.
