They are starting the final regular-season push with a new quarterback and an offensive line that has just lost its most consistent performer in the eyes of the team’s head coach. Yet, the Navy football team has been conditioned by the recent past to view the coming four-game stretch as its time.</p>

<p>The Midshipmen (5-3) are confronting only their second two-game losing streak over the past four seasons under fifth-year coach Paul Johnson. Beginning with today’s visit to winless Duke, Navy feels poised to finish strong once again, and a victory over the 0-8 Blue Devils would get the momentum rolling again by securing the school’s bowl eligibility for the fourth straight year…

They have similar first names, and because of injuries in the Navy secondary Jeremy McGown and Jeromy Miles have often patrolled the middle of the field together as the Midshipmen’s safeties. </p>

<p>McGown is a 5-foot-11, 189-pound senior who has played four positions during his career in Annapolis. Miles is a 6-2, 189-pound freshman. A comparison of the players provides a good example of how Navy’s recruiting efforts have improved during its recent run of success…

Navy’s 38-14 loss to Notre Dame had just finished last Saturday when Coach Paul Johnson delivered a simple message to the team in the locker room: Despite a two-game losing streak, all of their goals were still in reach. The Midshipmen (5-3) would become bowl eligible with a victory against Duke (0-8) today at 1 p.m. in Durham, N.C.</p>

Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada ran for 119 yards and a touchdown and threw for a score Saturday to lead Navy to a 38-13 victory over Duke.</p>

<p>Adam Ballard added 103 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Midshipmen (6-3), who had no trouble ending a two-game losing streak or finding plenty of running room against the winless Blue Devils (0-9). Navy ran for 435 yards, threw just five passes and didn’t punt all day…

Last week, Navy warily talked up winless Duke as a deceptively dangerous, talented opponent on the verge of breaking out of its doldrums. And for the first seven minutes yesterday, the Blue Devils started to look the part. </p>

<p>After that, however, Duke went back to being Duke, and the Midshipmen revved up their ground game, shaking off a rare two-game losing streak with authority and becoming bowl-eligible for the fourth straight season by running the Blue Devils out of their own stadium…

Navy’s seniors needed one more victory to set the modern-day program record for wins by a class going into their game yesterday at Duke. </p>

<p>Modern football is loosely defined as the time since the inception of the forward pass, and the Midshipmen looked decidedly un-modern in rolling to a 38-13 win against the Blue Devils at Wallace Wade Stadium. </p>

After two straight losses, Navy coach Paul Johnson gave his nicked-up team a lighter week of practice to help the Midshipmen to regroup.</p>

<p>He can’t argue with the bowl-clinching results.</p>

Listening to Navy coach Paul Johnson reviewing Saturday’s 38-13 rout at Duke, one might not get the idea the Midshipmen shredded the Blue Devils’ defense with such ease. Never mind that Navy ended its two-game losing streak and earned a berth in the Dec. 30 Meineke Car Care Bowl by rushing for 435 yards on 70 rushing plays. </p>

<p>Johnson was displeased with the number of breakdowns on the offensive line. The line included sophomore right tackle Andrew McGinn, who has replaced junior Josh Meek, who is out for the season with a right knee injury…

<p>Blocking by the offensive line is still a problem.</p>
