On the previous play - an image that may haunt Navy football fans for the rest of the season and one that was too gruesome to replay on the jumbo screens - Hampton dove for a 6-yard gain on an option keeper to the right side. He was met by a wall of defenders and tackled by senior defensive tackle Ramel Meekins of Rutgers, who awkwardly landed on the signal-caller.

<p>It may have been gruesome but they didn’t have any problem replaying it several times on TV.</p>

Kaheaku-Enhada gained just 11 yards on 22 carries and was 2-for-6 passing for 28 yards against Rutgers. He was sacked four times for -25 yards. Bryant managed just five yards on three carries while completing 2-of-10 passes for 20 yards.</p>

<p>“I don’t think you can evaluate either of them off Saturday. They were running for their lives,” Johnson said. “If we don’t start blocking people better, it’s not going to matter who is playing quarterback.”

Navy senior quarterback Brian Hampton suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his left knee in the first quarter of a 34-0 loss to No. 19 Rutgers on Saturday, team doctors said yesterday. He is out for the season and faces a rehabilitation of almost a year.

An MRI on Navy quarterback Brian Hampton’s left knee confirmed the structural damage likely will take months to rehabilitate. </p>

<p>That doesn’t mean Hampton, a senior from Illinois, is necessarily ready to call it a career. </p>

<p>“I basically want to do one of two things – get back on the field as fast as I possibly can or get my coach’s whistle,” Hampton said while he stood with the help of crutches yesterday. “I’m not too sure if I should just say hey, throw in the towel. Go ahead and put on my jumpsuit and whistle, throw on a hat and be a coach for the rest of the year, or keep my physical strength and endurance up to possibly hit a game at the end of the year.”

Barring a dramatic change, Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada will start at quarterback for Navy against 10th-ranked Notre Dame next Saturday, head coach Paul Johnson said yesterday.
