Navy Boasts Top Rushing Attack In Division I-A

PHILADELPHIA - Temple, under the direction of first-year head coach Al Golden, travels to Annapolis, Md. to meet Navy, under the leadership of fifth-year mentor Paul Johnson, at 34,000-seat Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Saturday in a 12:30 p.m. kick-off. Temple employs a multiple offense and a 3-4 defense. Navy utilizes a spread offense and a multiple defense. The contest will mark the season finale for the Owls, who will be looking to end their campaign on a positive note. Fifteen seniors have competed for the Owls this season. The contest will also mark the final home game for 31 Navy seniors.

Saturday’s game will be televised by CSTV, with Pete Medhurst calling the action, Scott Zolak providing the commentary and Sheehan Stanwick Burch patrolling the sidelines. CSTV is available via DIRECTV (channel 610) and the Dish Network (channel 152) with the requisite package. The radio broadcast will air on WPHT 1210 AM with Harry Donahue issuing the play-by-play and Steve Joachim serving as analyst.

Temple has played 21 true freshmen thus far this season, the most in Div. I-A. Thirty-seven Owls have seen their first collegiate action this season, including five redshirt freshmen. In total, 68 different players have competed. Of those 68, 46 have two or more additional seasons of eligibility remaining after the 2006 campaign.

Temple (1-10) is coming off a 47-0 loss to Penn State (7-4) last Saturday afternoon in a steady rain at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lion defense stifled the Owls, who generated just two first downs en route to 74 total yards. Temple committed five fumbles, losing two, in the soggy conditions and never advanced into PSU territory. Fifteen players with sophomore or freshman eligibility started for the Owls against a veteran Nittany Lion squad, as just six seniors and one junior earned the starting nod for TU.

Temple redshirt sophomore Travis Shelton had another productive day on returns, with 132 yards on five kickoffs, including a 42-yard return from deep in the end zone. In order to be included in the NCAA rankings, a player must compete in 75 percent of his team’s games. If Shelton (50%) were eligible, he would lead the nation in all-purpose running (207.8), ahead of Northern Illinois’ Garrett Wolfe (176.30) and would rank third in kickoff returns (31.24).

Navy (7-3) is coming off a 49-21 defeat of Eastern Michigan (1-9) at Ford Field in Detroit last Saturday afternoon. The Midshipmen jumped-out to a 28-0 advantage and generated 323 rushing yards, while scoring TDs on all six of their trips into the red zone. Sophomore QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada rushed for four scores and passed for two more as 12 different players were credited with rushing attempts for Navy. The Mids, who have not punted in their past two games, lead the nation in rushing, averaging 324.50 yards per game, as FB Adam Ballard (75.40) and SB Reggie Campbell (58.70) combine for 134.1 rushing yards per contest. Navy has already accepted an invitation to compete in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 30 in Charlotte, N.C.
