Necessary to be a great writer?

Well, I am not sure that Wild “technically used the term incorrectly.” If there’s anything I’ve learned from linguistic philosophy, it is that we look at the use to eludicate meaning, and not intention. Oh, also, there is no private language!!

Yeah, I knew I was espousing a controversial claim when I said that.

Oh well, my previous claims still stand:D

Wow, nspeds is a ■■■■■■■■■. No thesaurus needed to figure that out.

No intention to prove otherwise, nor any desire to. It takes one to know one, I suppose.

Guys, guys, calm down here. No need to get into a catfight.

As for “proper” use of language - when reasonable people have different, but still very valid, methods of using language, I see no need to pretend that one method is inherently superiour to the other and that the other method is incorrect.

Personally, I love the fact that our words have so many different meanings. Maybe it’s because I’m really geeky about ancient languages and love the way that words have secondary and tertiary meanings, many of which come from evolving usages. (Shrugs.)

If you want precision, study math. For that matter, run far away from law. ;)

My philosophy: the best form of communication is that which communicates best. Don’t say “utilize” when everyone understands “use”; don’t say “otiose” when you have “futile” - unless you absolutely believe that the former communicates something that the latter doesn’t.

That is, unless you want to confuse people. In that case, enjoy flaunting your otiose command of the english vocabulary. It might help you get laid.

Anyone disagree?

Oh yeah and sorry for perpetuating the irrelevant argument. Kinda.

I agree completely, Weasel.
