[Goes to back look at MaterS’ post #4…laughs. ] :))
I thought this was beautiful.

Lovely! But how do you find apples that have that pink center? That is way beyond my skill level in any event. I look at things like this and wonder who makes these things:
That Paula Deen tart looks amazing, but getting the crust to be as good looking as the one pictured would not be a simple task. If you make that one, practice first. If the point is not to practice, I’d suggest a different recipe.
Actually, that fruit tart crust shouldn’t be that hard. It’s a simple shortbread crust pressed into a tart pan. As long as you have a tart pan with the fluted edge, it is a matter of pressing the dough into the pan. Voila!
@raclut - that is beautiful but I have never heard, let alone seen, pink pearl apples. I wonder if one could substitute in other apples…I suppose you would lose that lovely pink color. Too bad!
It’s a matter of getting the shortcrust out of the tart pan without breaking it.
Most tart pans have a removable bottom. Shortbread is buttery so not hard to remove because it tends not to stick to the pan.
I haven’t achieved perfection every time I tried.
I let dh pick and he said he liked the cheesecake idea. So @1214mom , I made your cheesecake today. I had to use ghiradelli chocolate and it had a higher dark chocolate percentage. Today was the practice and for the final cake, I will head to the bigger town nearby and get the Godiva- 75% as it should be sweeter and I will decorate the base with red raspberries. I really appreciated everyone’s input and my neighbor was thrilled to get some suggestions. By the way, this was a great additional fundraiser for my husband’s service club last year, in case anyone needs a fundraiser. It surprised all of us at how much people were willing to bid on cakes. Of course, being in a bar with drinks probably helped to loosen wallets…
@thumper1 I love it! Thumper will you marry me.
@dadoftwingirls You’re an overachiever. Lol
Banana cream mousse-isn a la Magnolia Bakery.
Jello banana cream dessert cooked to directions. When cool stir . Gold in whipped cream (home made add vanilla and sugar to taste) Open box of vanilla wafers. cut two bananas
Get out a pretty crystal or glass bowl.
layer…banana cream/wafers /fresh bananas. Keep going until you run out of stuff. Put a few wafers on top artisitically. Needs about 3 hours to blend.
not golf…fold gently…whipped cream into banana pudding
Luscious, impressive-looking, and easy:
Graham cracker crust (homemade or bought – homemade is MUCH better and still easy, but a ready crust is good too)
Mix together 1 can sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 cup key lime juice (and zest from 1 if you have fresh limes)
Pour the mixture into the crust. That’s it.
Heap a pint of fresh berries on the filling. I like blueberries, but blackberries or raspberries or any mixture would be delicious.
Melt half a cup of apple or red currant jelly in the microwave. Brush the liquid jelly over the berries as a glaze. Stick the pie in the fridge. Done.
@gearmom, here giving the male slacker perspective.
@dadoftwingirls I just going to put this out there. My grandfather did the cooking for his family. And My brother in law and his brother and his father all do the cooking. And it’s gourmet like Emeril. Those Italian men picking up the slack for the slackers.
*and grandpa washed all the dishes. Probably to get some quiet time away from the 8 kids though.
@onward, you will have to tell us how much your dessert goes for. I hope it turns out well.
My wife is Norwegian, and her idea of cooking is to boil some protein until it floats and then salt it. It took me a decade of Sunday morning phone calls to get my mom’s red sauce correct. I have done all the cooking (when I have been home) for thirty years, to the rejoicing of all involved.
I know it is kind of late, but my favorite easy dessert that makes a nice visual impact is a Jalouise, which is a kind of fruit tart in a puff pastry crust. It should be easy to find a basic recipe on line. The usual is an apple brown butter filing with walnuts and maybe whipped cream on top, but I have done some for similar auctions with a strawberry compote filling, and topped it with sliced fresh berries, mint, powdered sugar and a drizzle of chocolate.
Real cooks make this with homemade puff pastry, but Peppridge Farm can be your friend, and I have never been able to tell the difference. Honestly, my favorite Jalouise is just a frozen puff pastry crust and a filling made of a couple cups of GFS frozen “blend o berries” with a bit of sugar and lemon juice.
We just finished with our successful dessert auction. 15 desserts and mine went for the second highest bid! I made a triple chocolate cheesecake with raspberries decorated with some red flowers (off of a house plant). It went for $500!! Whoohoo! Next year, I plan to check out this thread and do something different. Thank you all for inspiring me!
