Need advice/tips re: post-surgery care for adult DS [MPFL knee surgery]

The home health agency here coordinated the in home PT I received after my knee replacement. They also sent a nurse to check the dressings and change them.

Your son probably has a lot more info than you know…surgical centers give this stuff out!

I need to get/see those papers!

I think he anticipates going to PT

I wonder if some of it is a function of how good his insurance is??

He won’t be going there until he is more mobile. It’s very possible he will have in home PT for a couple of weeks. Plus, one of the goals of PT is to have the person be able to function in their home. My PT evaluated that too….and gave me great suggestions.

Best advice…. When you leave the hospital and are heading to the Airbnb, start mentally chanting, “I will not hover, I will not hover…”.

Bring some things to do so he will see that you have purpose and activity beyond caring for him. Needlework, books, your exercise clothing - stuff to fill your time!

Just look up the procedure online and many doctors /hospital’s have the same information online to give you a clue. It will be lots of icing and taking their medication and range of motion. Some doctors want standing right away and others do it more gradually. His doctors office might have this online also. Major hospital systems usually do.

BTW - you are a great mom. He will be fine.

The other more logical thing to do is just call the doctor’s office and tell them your coming in from out of town and would like to know the post op course to help your son. If not on their website there is nothing stopping them giving you the post op information without his name on it. It’s just sheets of paper. I don’t do knee surgery but have done this type of thing in the past in similar situations.

Also some of my patients would have to go on their “behind” step by step up to their apartment on the third floor. He’s very lucky to have you pay for an Arbnb to help his recovery be easier. He will realize this day 1.

Normatec compression boots? They are used to promote circulation and prevent clot formation after leg surgeries. Super expensive but maybe they can be rented if your doctor recommends that. I used them after hip bone shaving procedure.

All of this is helpful.

I texted a bit with him this morning. I’m trying not to overdo my questions. He says he was having some issues with their portal, but once he could get in he would be able to send me the info he has.

I probably jumped on here too soon out of sheer panic.

Your doctor will recommend if needed. We have THREE sets of these from various leg procedures….thats three pairs! In all cases here, they were used only on the leg where the procedure was NOT done. And with a specific on off schedule. And not when sleeping.

Please let your son discuss this with the doctors. Also, they will give your son some post op instructions upon discharge time…and that’s also when you might see them give your son extra things like compression things, crutches, a walker…etc.

But he should be able to find out what he needs or will get before he gets there or at least with the intake nurse. It’s possible you can accompany him to the intake area.

Note I said “if your doctor recommends that.”

BTW… They can’t possibly be used when sleeping. Too disruptive! There are also knockoffs that my PT warned about.
