Ok, now I’m sure a number of us are curious how it went.
@vandygrad87
It was a wonderful trip! Here’s a short write up but will be glad to go into more detail where desired. I definitely want to return to Maine again to do Bar Harbor/Acadia/Canada.
Excellent trip! We had a cool and rainy day on arrival Monday but it worked out well as we were forced into outlet shopping- for real! My smart-but-sometimes-clueless 18 year old packed his bag and then left it on his bed instead of packing it into the car… this was discovered when we arrived at the airport. He bought himself enough clothes at the Freeport outlet to get through the trip. Great deals especially at Bass. Lesson learned!
We actually ended up doing a great deal of what was on the list. We didn’t hike Mt Battie but drove up instead since we lost time on Monday doing all the shopping. While in Freeport Monday, we did go to Harrakeesett Lobster Pound (yum) and Gelato Fiasco (meh) and Wicked Whoopie (surprise YUM.) On Tuesday after Mt Battie we then hiked out to Rockland Breakwater, ate at Claws and then went to the Farnsworth, then came back to explore the town of Camden.
Wednesday we meandered to the Southern coast, stopping at Owl’s Head Light, Moody’s diner for pie (meh) and Two Light at Cape Elizabeth for lobster (Yum and GORGEOUS) before pulling in to Ogunquit around 4.
At first we didn’t like Ogunquit bc of its touristy kitschy feel but we did come to adjust to it relatively well - we liked the beach a lot.
Thursday we explored Ogunquit a bit, then went to Kennebunk/Kennebunkport. We enjoyed exploring there, had lunch at Allisons (sp?) and went to Ocean Avenue to see the Bush’s compound. Then we went over to York Beach to see Nubble Light (AWESOME!) and walked around York Beach (loved it.)
Speaking of Ogunquit, we did Marginal Way a couple of times plus lots of other walking. On Thursday I think we must have walked at least six miles.
Friday we got up and had breakfast at Goldenrod in York Beach (super loved it) and then spent the day at Ogunquit Beach (very fun.) Then off to the airport at Manchester NH.
Great trip!
Whew. You did a lot in a short time. Sorry you didn’t like the pie! But it sounds like you had your fair share of good lobster!!
Yes, yes, yes. You must be great travelers.
@thumper1 - I think it had more to do with full tummies and maybe not making the right pie choice. Clearly Moody’s is much loved for its pie!
Thank you to everyone for such great input. I had tons of notes and all the ideas given made it easy to really enjoy and maximize our time. THANK YOU!!
ps- I loved Maine and will absolutely be back.
I’m so glad that you made it to the Yorks. We love that area. Like the Goldenrod. I hope the salt water taffy place is still there! Sounds like great trip. You have me excited to visit again:)
Love all the warm and fuzzies for my adopted state.
So…we go in about 2 weeks. Mr. Ellebud is visiting some childhood memories. And then there is a family party. Not my family…should be interesting.
@amom2girls - yep the Goldenrod is still there and the machines were pulling the salt water taffy, with another machine (that they were having some trouble with) cutting it and wrapping it, all while we watched. Great idea to have all that candy making happening in the window. We loved that place!
Saltwater taffy has to be the most overrated candy in existence. It sounds so good. It tastes so blah. I remember that it was a big deal to get a box when we were on vacation as children. I look back and ask why? Maybe it’s the beach.
@vandygrad87 Judging by your response to our pie and gelato recommendations, you must not have left enough room for dessert!
Friends of my sister and BIL are flying up to Maine in a couple of weeks. Their son is hiking the Appalachian Trail. Since he will pass within about three miles of our cabin, we’re going to take the parents up to pick up the young man at mile 2000 of the trail. We’ll give him a big meal and he can take a hot shower. It will be fun showing newbies around our state.
@Consolation I must have been full of seafood, donuts and ice cream!
Maine is a special state, one that I am proud to be from. Once early August rolls around I start to feel a bit grumpy knowing that I must leave soon. Our daughter arrives this weekend now that her REU is ending. That helps. I still have a little building sad feeling to have to leave until next summer. Good thing that it is corn, lobster, and blueberry pie season.
Don’t forget the tomatoes, oysters, mussels, clams, and crab, @NorthernMom61!
So true @doschicos! There is so much great food here, the list could go on and on.
So glad I clicked on this thread! I am in Maine right now- we stay right outside Brunswick. Had lunch in town today and our kids got gelato at Gelato Fiasco but I fight try any. Now I know where we are getting lunch next time we are back in town- can’t wait to try Libbys! Our normal go to for lobster rolls out here is Erica’s or the Dolphin Marina if we want a nice sit down meal.
@Consolation - Thank you so much for the Libby’s recommendation! We have been visiting friends in that area every summer for over 15 years and had never been. We were heading to the airport yesterday and I had my husband stop there on the way out of town. He had a traditional mayo roll, I had the butter (had been wanting to try one like that!) they were both amazing. I thought I had heard the butter rolls were usually served hot, this one was cold but I think I liked it that way even better! They asked me if I wanted lettuce on mine and I said no, they didn’t ask on my husband’s and they put it on anyway. He was fine with it, but if you are against lettuce on your roll like I am make sure you ask for it plain. The only problem we had was that we were in a rush so had to eat them on our laps as we drove to Boston - not exactly the best food to eat on the go!
While we waited we saw them making other food that looked good - the bacon grilled cheese looked delicious. Libby’s will definitely be on our rotation from now on. It i usually hard to get us away from the Dolphin - this trip we went 4 times in 5 days :))
Got together for dinner with Consolation and bevhills tonight! Very fun. Mr. bevhills was a good sport to put up with us!
I am so happy we met up! Best thing is we are all who we say (in writing here) we are. Mr. Ellebud was amused with us. Wonderful dinner…better people!!!
I and others have mentioned Gelato Fiasco in Brunswick and Portland on this and other threads about Maine. Turns out they’ve greatly expanded their retail pint distribution across the country. Although nothing is as good as getting a freshly scooped cone in beautiful Maine, here’s a link to find a grocery retailer near you and a $2 off coupon to use:
