Need Aware or Need Blind?

We are need blind for all domestic students (first year applicants and international students), which includes US citizens, US permanent residents, and citizens of Canada. 100% of need will be met for domestic students who choose to apply for aid at any point in the College, even if they did not apply for aid with their initial application. We are need aware for first-year international applicants, and international students are not eligible to apply for aid at any point other than their original application time. No aid is available for international transfer students.

We determine need according to these methods: [How Aid is Determined | The University of Chicago College Admissions](http://collegeaid.uchicago.edu/costs/determined.shtml)

Need is met primarily through grants-- University of Chicago grants, Pell grants (for qualifying students), and Illinois MAP grants (for qualifying residents of Illinois). Any loans offered will be federally subsidized loans, and students will not be expected to borrow more than $3,500 per year as part of their aid package. Through the Odyssey Scholarship program, students with family incomes less than $75,000/year will have any federally subsidized loans replaced with grants in their aid package; less than $90,000/year, and half of the loans offered will be replaced. Approximately 10% of our incoming class will be offered some type of merit-based scholarship, between $5,000-$15,000 per year, renewable for four years.
