Need Help with MOG Dress (September)

I quoted that expression to a MOG once, and she replied, “Not if you’re paying for half!”

Lol…I just went through being MOB (had a blast, but I’m tired). I’m actually looking forward to being MOG in a year or so and being told what to do. But that’s just me…

I don’t understand why being MOG is any less heavy of a lift than MOB…aren’t two people getting married???

@abasket the MOG was invited to give ideas or listen to what we were planning. In our case, since we were hosting the event, she was not the main decision maker. But we wanted her to be included.

^^I realize that point of view. And now I realize this is not the wedding thread but a wedding DRESS thread so I probably shouldn’t have posted “off topic” here…but in our family I don’t see it that way. It’s the bride and groom’s wedding so I personally see decisions - our money or their money - being largely their equal decision - and all people outside of bride and groom as being second tier decision makers.

I’ve been a MOG twice. In the first one, I was actually very very involved and was exhausted. In the second one, I was basically a guest. I think I kinda preferred the first one.

I had an errand the other day in the same strip mall as our local David’s Bridal the other day and walked through just for the heck of it. Saw a dress I really liked with a flowy skirt and just the right amount of bling, and it was actually beige.

With the couple’s blessings, absolutely wear what you love and are comfortable in.
I, too, am NOT a fancy person. At all. Ever. However, I cannot wear high heels of any sort, no way. So, ironically for me, a long dress was a saving grace, minimizing the low heeled sandals I was wearing.

I’ve been re-reading this thread as I began shopping seriously. I still don’t know what the MOB is wearing. The bride says “not white, whatever”

The wedding is October. Every department store I visited said I’m early. The 2 boutiques, where I shopped with my g/f ( the shopping Master), are showing knits. The only one that is a contender can be ordered in navy, with white trim. Like Dentmon’s Dress, it looks like a 2 piece. Silly me, I didn’t write down the designer. I’ll get that today.
I’m wondering what others with fall weddings have found for themselves.

@VeryHappy and I had kids who were married in October. I know I ordered all of my many dresses I tried on from Nordstrom and Macy’s. I needed a petite and ordered a variety of styles and sizes.

I think I started around August as that’s when the fall dresses started showing up. I looked quickly at Nordstrom and it looks like they have a few fall dresses.

On the Nordstrom website, there is a drop down. Women, the wedding suite, mother of the bride. Then I filtered by size.

I found that I needed to go up a size in formal wear but not everyone has to. Maybe I’m fooling myself in what size I am, lol!

I ordered a ton of dresses and returned to the store.

I tagged very happy because I remember that our kids got married on the same day. I’m hoping she’ll chime in.

The MOB also procrastinated buying her dress which I was not comfortable with. I gave her time but was told over and over again that she didn’t want to look until closer to the day. Which was fine.

Gosh, I haven’t been on this thread in a long time! S1 got married in October of 2017 – same day as @deb922 's kid – and I had settled on my dress sometime in August. S2 got married just last February and I settled (no, I don’t mean I “settled” for the dress!) on the dress in about November!

For both dresses, I wore my usual size.

For S1’s wedding, I probably bought and returned around 30 dresses. Nordstrom, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Anthropologie, Komarov. I got to know the young woman at the UPS drop-off store very well.

IMO, this is by no means too early to shop. At the least, you’ll find out what looks good on you or not, what you like or not, what you’re comfortable in or not. And if you’re lucky, you’ll find The Dress.

DD is getting married in March and I have already bought and returned two dresses. My son got married last August in the evening and it was kind of formal. My daughter is having a Saturday “Brunch” wedding, so I feel like I should wear something kind of flowy (?). Although that is not really my style.

For flowy and flowery, try YumiKim.com. Lovely silk dresses.

Wow @VeryHappy Thank you!! Lots of great options! Just what I was looking for!

I wore one of their at S2’s wedding in Puerto Rico. The bride wanted very flowery and my dress really hit the spot. They are well made, too. I originally became aware of Umi Kim from Anthropologie.

@tx5athome

Shop now. I hit it very lucky in October purchasing a dress to wear to a May wedding. It was lavender…definitely not a fall color…and was on the sale rack. You might NOW find a dress for a spring wedding left over from last season that you love.

Really, I’m not sure there are colors for the seasons. Just find something you like!

This thread is helpful - my S is getting married in March and I really didn’t intend to start looking for a dress until later in the fall. B has not yet shared if she wants me to wear a particular color but I know it will be long and formal because it’s essentially a black tie wedding. Will I have a problem finding a shoulder season kind of dress then…not winter but not yet really spring?

Not at all. In my experience, they don’t change all that much season to season.

D’s wedding is in January. In June I tried dresses on at a couple of department stores and a boutique, just to see what I liked. Both were out of most dresses in my size. I was told the new season of dresses would begin arriving in August and would be pretty full by Labor Day. In the mean time I ordered one dress in two sizes (Adriana Papell) from Bloomingdales. I’ve kept the size that fits best, as it just needs hemming. I’d like to see what’s new this fall before I decide if this is the dress. It looks good, I’m happy in it, but I’d rather buy a dress at Nordstrom where I can use my points and get my alternations included. Bloomingdales return policy is a full year — that’s amazing and I feel a bit guilty about it!

I was shopping on line last night. I found 3 dresses that I liked at Saks, and a few at NM. When I went to order from Saks tonight, 2 were sold out. Neimans didn’t have a record of my account, so I just ordered one.

I was willing to order all 3 from Saks, but a lot of $ on credit card. How do those of you who, order so many deal it’s the $ issue?
