Need opinions before I buy. Leather vs cloth furniture for a modern living room?

I’m not. This is one of our dining room chairs. The fabric ones are generally left alone!

Our cats love to curl up on the kitty blanket in the middle of our Stressless sofa and watch TV with us. Never had any desire to use the sofa as a scratch post. Our previous cloth sofa had quite a few scratch marks.

My DS and DIL have two cats who had never scratched anything other than their cat scratch posts. They were given a high end top grain leather set by his boss (rich CEO who upgraded). Within a month cats had destroyed the tops of all the seat cushions.

I have had many cats. They are unpredictable little creatures when you bring something new into THEIR home.

I think I’m glad we have a dog.

Dude sheds a lot though. Leather definitely easier to clean of dog hair!

A childhood cat totally destroyed one corner of our loveseat. My parents bought a new one and ended up having to put a scratching post at that preferred corner to prevent same from happening again.

We had a quality leather chair ruined by a cat with only back claws jumping off my husband’s lap.
We also have a good quality fabric sofa and like someone mentioned it starting to look dirty ( light color). No stains, just dirty.
Has anyone had success having a cloth sofa with a code W professionally steamed cleaned?

Hm… new poster, no replies?

Yes. But listen to your tech. If they tell you they can’t clean it-- believe them. I have an off-white couch in my home office (30 years old, not a worn spot or stain but just dirty) and when I get ambitious and have someone doing the bedroom and hallway wall-to-wall I’ll take them into the office and ask innocently “can you add the couch to the work order” and they always say no. The fabric is off-white, sort of a damask texture with pastel threads running through it, and they claim the pastel will run if they try to steam it clean. But if I ever find someone willing to try I’ll do it!! The couch is too big to fit out the doorway, otherwise I’d have replaced it already!!!

You can also choose fabric well. I mentioned above our C&B Axis furniture has washable fabric (Douglas). It is light grey and has a sueded, tiny herringbone texture and I was really skeptical about the washable claim, but almost all things spilt on it have come off with a damp cloth; a couple needed a bit of dishwashing liquid. The result is that 7-8 years later the fabric still looks perfect. (This is the set that we use every day, the cats thankfully haven’t scratched it, and it’s not unusual for my husband to spill coffee!)

LOL - There must be a good story there, since you got the couch in there. (Having flashbacks to “Mike Mulligan and the Steamshovel” book).

It seems what comes in doesn’t always go out. My sister had to hire a “couch doctor” (first I’d heard of this) to get a couch out when they moved. They basically split the couch in two and then repaired it at the new place.

Well we have a ping pong table in the basement that may never leave. The stairs have a 90 degree turn. Years ago when my husband started trying to guage what kind of assistance he would need to get the halves down the stairs, gravity gave him some unexpected help to get the job done. Going back up may have us envisioning the “Friends” couch moving episode - “PIVOT!”

Our new to us house came with a pool table. We decided that the basement space where it sat was not of much use so left it alone. Little kid had a better idea: she wanted that space turned into a playroom for all our grandkids, so she found a friend who wanted the table and would pay to have it moved. A win-win! Friend got a freebie for her new place, and we got rid of the massive table! The movers disassembled the whole thing and reassembled at the new place (it is an art, like moving a piano).

Our friends just bought a house. The previous owners left a massive gun safe… my husband who likes to tackle moving projects offered to help take it to the dump but looked at it and rescinded the offer.
