DePauw really is a great school. As a current student, I have found so many unique opportunities here. As a freshman alone, I gained an editorial position on the newspaper, took a Winter Term course that allowed me to explore something new, took classes that have challenged me and provided me with different perspectives, and seen people such as Academy Award nominated director Jason Reitman speak. These opportunities are what make DePauw so great, and one can tell that from the first time they see campus and meet the students.
To address the negatives that have been mentioned, drinking is a huge part of campus culture. However, most students do not spend every waking hour drinking and in fact most people I know who do drink do not do so until the weekends when they know they have time. Diversity at the school could be better, but at the same time, I find it pretty good. We all interact and come together - especially for things that allow us to show off our school pride! The freshman to sophomore retention rate is somewhat low, and President Casey is working to get to the bottom of this. However, I will say that the people who don’t end up staying typically are the people who don’t get involved in anything, so my best advice is to find something you love and do it! The Greek scene is not at all polarizing, and everyone interacts. In fact, Greek numbers are down this year as a lot more people begin to realize it’s not the end all be all of a college experience. Yes, a lot of people go to the frats, but a lot of people I know would be just as happy to stay in and watch a movie with you than go out on a Saturday night if it isn’t your scene.
