Neighbor practicing violin outside....badly

Or Beegees, Vanilla Ice, Yoko Ono…etc. :D

Granted…Zoosermom wins the grand prize for the most evilly effective one in the bunch. :D

Also agree with mathmom that you should consider taking a decibel reading and see if the violin playing violates a noise ordinance. If so, let the city deal with him.

We really DID have a bagpipe playing next door neighbor for 20 yrs.

He also would walk his also noisy dog around the block each evening wearing only a pair of cutoff shorts. This was a 50+ man with shoulder length unwashed matted grey hair.
Guess he thought we all enjoyed his show.

so they’re not on vacation. someone was practicing scales and church hymns around 10am today, but inside, so not as loud and not as bad as the dad, so I assume it was a kid. (I could actually realize there was a tune) Often the playing would stop and there was screaming.

such a lovely family…

Pray for rain. Lots of rain.

Hopefully, the OP’s town has stricter noise ordinance laws than NYC where Zoosermom and I live.

In NYC, unless the noise level is exceedingly loud for a residential area* or goes past 11 pm, what the crappy violin playing neighbor did would be completely legal. Worse, if one calls the cops, they are likely to ignore the complaint or worse, get on the complainer’s case for “wasting police resources/time”.**

*Violin playing won’t usually qualify.

** Saw this happen while home from college when a neighbor called in NYPD cops at 4 pm because another neighbor’s kids coming home from school were “making too much noise”. Entire floor including my father and later I joined in to watch the cops get the story from both sides only for the cops to read the riot act against the complainer because the noise “Is reasonable noise to be expected from elementary school children arriving home from school at this time of day.”, noise ordinances against excess noise don’t come into effect until 11 pm, and that they’ll cite him for “Wasting police resources/time” if he made such a complaint in same/similar circumstances again.

wooooo drum corps fans on CC! lol

I was telling D2 about this thread a couple of days ago, and she got a very embarrassed look on her face. She said she goes outside and sings loudly sometimes in the yard, and the neighbors probably hate it. Now… D2 is quite introverted, and would NEVER want to sing a solo in choir, but she actually has a fantastic voice and great pitch. She just likes to sing by herself… Fast forward to this morning – I went for a walk with my neighbor from across the street. She said, “Oh, too bad <intd2> is leaving for college next week. I will miss her singing – sometimes I find something to do to stay outside in my yard and listen to her when she is out singing!” So no one has played Barney for her yet. Didn’t tell her what the neighbor said, as I figure she would never utter a note outside again if she knew she had been overheard!</intd2>

“wooooo drum corps fans on CC! lol”

I’ll betcha there are plenty of drum corps fans on cc. I played mellophone and soprano for many years…but not in the big leagues like Santa Clara. Of course, we always liked the Blue Devils just a little bit more.

Caught up with another neighbor last night over a glass of wine. Their family has named these folks, along with the neighbors of 2 adjoining houses ‘The Backyardigans’.

Apparently my garage blocks the noise of dog fights of the other 2 families and the kids that scream non-stop in the yard behind them all afternoon & evening.

Perhaps the dad is playing badly to drown out THAT noise!

Lol. We used to have a Backyardigan in our neighborhood, too. We also have a neighbor who likes to burp really loudly and quite often when he is enjoying sunshine on his back patio. One day, our house shook from a horrible burping sound coming from his yard. Just as I was going to comment about how loud our neighbor has become, we heard the neighbor joifully yelling, “That was a good one, son! Way to go!” Sigh, like father, like son. :)

Just read in Huffington about the neighbor in Ottawa who complained about the noise her autistic neighbor next door was making…she wrote a letter to the mother that was outrageous.

I would try talking to him and tell him that the sound of the violin is kind of overbearing, and would it be possible for him to use a practice mute. With a practice mute, the sound doesn’t travel far, and it might be a nice compromise. We had to be careful about that, even indoors the sound of a violin being played can leak out of the house, especially with the instrument our S got recently, and he tends to practice into the early morning hours…but fortunately what leaks doesn’t go into surrounding houses, all people have told me is they occassionally hear him practicing and enjoy it, thank God.

If that doesn’t work, try getting recordings of Florence Foster Jenkins singing, and play them loudly, that will probably drive him indoors!

@coureur-

Bartok at least is recognizable as music, sounds more like he is playing anything by serialists/12 tone composers that they seem to stamp out of schools of composition and sounds like a constipated cow with its udders caught in a meat grinder.

Is it really that bad? Worse than a lawnmower or leafblower? Violin just isn’t that loud.

You really want revenge?

Take up the viola.

:)

That is stone cold.

Even colder would be to join the Backyardigans while learning to play the oboe.

I still think Zoosermom’s idea of playing the Barney The Purple Dinosaur soundtrack is the most efficient way to compel the violin player’s unconditional surrender. :D
