Too early to stress. If she has been invited for a visit, she is definitely in the mix. My D and her teammates were asked to evaluate each recruit during the OV’s. If this is a team sport, chemistry is important. The coach is bound to have a whole matrix of qualities she is assessing. It was pretty clear to my S on his OV’s that he was being evaluated on a personal level. He was not given his “offer” until the coach met him at the end, even though he was told he was a top recruit.
Depends on the sport. For my son’s, there have been numerous commits across NESCACs since 7/1 and it seems the OVs are more of a formality/confirmation than a substantive part of the decision-making process
“Would love for her to come meet the team” – did the coach say this? If so, it may mean that you (and probably everyone else) is in a waiting period. She passed the pre-read and (if that statement came from the coach) is among the group of recruits that the coach wants to come do an overnight. The winnowing goes 1) pre-read ----> 2) overnight (sometimes, depends on team/coach/school) -----> 3) offer extended to those who the coach selects after the visit. So, this could be the best possible thing, but it just is going to take more time.
This was my thought too, and how it happened in our sport. Nothing more specific until much closer to said visits late August/early Sept. My guess is a lot of coaches don’t have the details/logistics ironed out at this point so don’t offer more.
Offers should start to be accepted this week I would think.
Again, this is very sport specific. Some will wait until after early fall visits.
I’m guessing @SoccerTippy’s sport is soccer in which case they are right, acceptances are happening now and into August (for top programs) and not waiting on fall visits (which I’m not aware are a thing in soccer). Of course your point that timing is sport and school specific is 100% right!
Our observations are that for top NESCAC recruits in most sports, the coach will not wait until OVs during senior Fall to make offers. It’s too late to lock down top recruits by then. The coach and some future teammates have often had exposure with the athlete at showcases, unofficial visits (Spring of Junior year), tournaments, and other occasions.
OVs can be “nice to haves”, and also an occasion to interact with lower priority athletes - who BTW are amazing athletes, no disrespect intended. These can lead to offers, but again, not usually for the highest priority recruits.
The timing of OVs for Ivies is much earlier and are more of a coach/team selection process, IOE. If others have had different experiences, would love to hear in order to pass on the most accurate info in this thread.
EDIT: IOE, this is for many, but not all, sports.
Very sport dependent. Our experience in XC/TF was OVs in the early fall at Ivy schools and also non-Ivys.
I assume you mean Senior Fall? Thanks for the info.
Yes, fall of senior year.
S’s sport was baseball. He had “offers” from Amherst, Hamilton, Swat, Pomona, MIT and Caltech. He was told on phone calls that he was a top priority in August, but the offers for full support (understanding full support for MIT and Caltech meant 50/50) with an ED app did not come until after the OV. He was HS class 2017, so things may have changed and all of this can be sport/school/coach specific. I agree though that if you are number 1-4 (assume 4 supported spots), you will know pretty quickly.
Agreed, and this was our experience as well. For reference, for my D’s sport (field sport), the top NESCAC recruits have already announced their commitments since 7/1 on social media. I’m sure it can be sport-dependent, but this our experience.
Just to add to this… our experience during the summer involved lots of probing from the coaches on where we were with other schools and what was our timing. I imagine if we had said “you are my top choice and I am ready to commit and be done with that process” an offer might have materialized. There were also a couple of coaches who’s language suggested the ball was on our court, so to speak.
This was my daughter’s experience. She had coaches reaching out to her to schedule calls on Aug 1 in the last couple of weeks of July. She also had coaches indirectly signaling that she was a top pick well before the pre-read date. She had multiple offers and coaches were respectful of her timeline so that meant that things stretched out a bit for kids slightly further down the list at the schools she didn’t choose.
Yes that’s correct. So it’s probably more soccer vs other sports in terms of timing. Things seem to be starting to move now based on social media.
@TonyGrace I think this is important as my daughter has been telling coaches she wants to wrap up the process by the end of the summer so she knows where she will be EDing. Coaches are probably respecting this and many D3 programs outside of the nescacs seem to be working off a similar timeline of the summer.
So anyone know what group 2 means for soccer? If you at the top of group 2 at this point, is that a good position to be in? My kid is in group 2 at a number of places and trying to determine if that is a good or not so good place to be.
The good news is she had an outstanding pre read at one of the schools. The downside is still waiting for an offer.
I imagine that means they made offers and if those are not accepted, an offer may be extended to your D.
