Netflix

What sort of selection does Amazon have in their streaming?

^^ if you go on the amazon home page and search instant video streaming, you can look…I can’t link it without it logging on to my d’s account

This is interesting reading, because people use Netflix in so many different ways.

Our Netflix DVD and instant queues are long. That’s partly because whenever a new movie comes out that I think we’d like to see, I add it to the queue. Most of the time we don’t catch the film in theatrical release, and this way I know we’ll be able to see it eventually. I also use Netflix’s recommendations a lot, the “because you liked A, B and C we think you’ll like D” feature. There is the occasional clunker, but mostly the recommendations work really well for us.

Many years ago when TiVo was brand new, someone told me that it revolutionized how their family watched TV. Suddenly, there was always magically something available to be watched that they wanted to watch. I’m not a big TV watcher, so I was unimpressed. Now I realize that Netflix is the same kind of experience for me. The other streaming content providers don’t yet offer this kind of service, or they don’t do it as well as Netflix does. Yet.

I’m going to be disappointed if I do end up having to cancel netflix altogether. It put together a “19th-century british period romantic dramas with strong female leads” category for me, and I’ve loved EVERY film it’s given me!

Just discovered that there is Blockbuster Express (similar to Redbox) near us. I didn’t know that they existed.

Ema, have you seen North and South? I’m crushing on Richard Armitage big time. :)

My favorite mini-series. Loved the book, too. Emaheevul07, I would sure like a glance at the films in that specialized Netflix category. :)

I have an old Netflix plan–$4.99 per month for two DVDs. It fits my needs perfectly. I keep expecting to get an e-mail telling me that the plan is no longer available, but so far I appear to be still grandfathered in.

What I hate about the loss of my local video/dvd rental store is the loss of the ability to watch “classic” or older films, on the spur of the moment.

I cancelled Netflix because we don’t watch enough to justify the monthly fee. But the other day S and I were discussing the original “Wall Street,” which he has never seen. Turns out the only place I could find it was on Netflix, and if I restarted my account we’d still have to wait for it to be mailed to us. I can guarantee if I could have gone to my local Hollywood Video store, it would have been on a shelf waiting for us. Would have cost me $4 to rent it for 3 days. :(

DITTO THAT!!! I saw that because netflix recommended it and I bought it on DVD because he is SO GREAT! XD My friends see his pictures and are like What??? Really??? but you’ve just got to see that movie. The kiss at the end is THE MOST satisfying moment of a romantic movie I’ve ever seen. I think I am going to have to watch it now. :D

Wow bit of a burst of energy there. XD So nice to meet another Richard fan! I started watching those kinds of things because I watched the Middlemarch one on instant-watch because I was reading it for a class, and now I’ve been watching every one I can get my hands on. I adore that kind of stuff.

That settles it, I’m not getting rid of netflix. XD

“I have an old Netflix plan–$4.99 per month for two DVDs.”

Mary, be sure to check your email and your account. I think I’ve had that plan ( for awhile I had a 3 DVD plan) for maybe seven years, and I had no grandfather clause.Just noticed I first signed up in 2001!

Never mind; just checked. that option is there under “limited plans.”

Limited Plans

1 DVD out at-a-time

^Agreed. I’ve had netflix four years and am actually a little disgruntled that there is no loyalty discount or perk at all. They definitely have not been grandfathering me out of the price hikes.

sigh Cancelled our DVD service. Just streaming now. Man, they really put it to their loyal customers with this price hike.

Not sure I am allowed to link to it, but the comedy site funny or die has a hilarious Jason Alexander (of Seinfeld fame) clip about the Netflix Relief Fund. Very well done.

ITA. I got it from my library earlier this week. I have now watched the ending something like 8 times on streaming from Netflix  In fact, I think I’m going to have to watch it again now! :D

He’s also in one of the last seasons of MI5, BTW.

We did too. So sad. I loved the DVD service. I keeping telling myself that the closest post office is on the chopping block, so it is just as well. It will be more inconvenient for me to mail the DVDs back (we don’t have our mail carrier pick up our mail at the door. I know some folks do that). I always mailed DVDs back inside our PO for quickest turn around time.

I am cancelling my netflix, we don’t watch a lot of movies these days, and with the three dvd’s out plan reaching 25 bucks with streaming, just not worth it. Part of the problem with Netflix streaming is that so many of the things they have are not available on streaming, and often you want to look at a tv show, for example, and one season (let’s say season 5) is available while another one (season 1) is not. I am not entirely blaming Netflix, a lot of providers are squeamish about streaming and they may not have the rights, but in effect it means I would need both the streaming and dvd service to be able to have any hope of finding what I wanted to watch. Given the amount we watch, there are other sources for movies we can use that will turn out to be more cost effective.

I made the decision to change to streaming only because the price increase is just too much. However, the new rate doesn’t start until Sept 1 and they won’t let you set a date for the change. I refuse to not get my last month’s worth. I guess I better put it on the calendar to change on August 30

FYI- i called netflix and asked if i can have 2 dvd’s a month plan and streaming. they said i had to have 2 different emails but using the same credit card was ok. I want to keep the ROKU streaming but the CD’s we use about 2 times a month at the most. Red box is about 30 minutes away and blockbuster closed.may try without cd at first and add later if i feel i am missing the cd’s. they seriously need to improve the streaming choices

I dropped our DVD mail option today. I kept the streaming option only because S2 will be at school with no TV or cable in his room…he may want to watch on his computer via logging into our account. I’m good with that for now. After the school year if he hasn’t used it much we will drop it. Redbox is so close and suits us fine.

Definitely! If they want us to move to streaming (more profit for them)…they need to put more of the stuff I want to see on streaming.
