yabeyabe-my D is at this very moment wasting time watching reruns of America’s Next Top Model. She is addicted, god knows why!!!

I don’t know if I should be glad my son does not have a Facebook page (he thinks it is too trendy and a waste of time) or if it would be preferable to the amount of time he spends merrily blasting video aliens while cackling.

I knew the videogames would be trouble when I thought it would be bonding to play a video football game with him, thinking I could teach him football strategy. Instead, with his infinitely greater finger dexterity, he beat me 100-0, amusing himself no end, while I tried to be a good sport.

He was also horrified to learn I had a Facebook page, especially because friends of his looking for him found me instead. Thank God I had not posted the picture of me scuba diving I had intended to!

His lack of a Facebook page has likely also saved my life–could I have resisted suggesting that Rodeney, Emmybet, Holliesue, etc encourage their daughters to check out his handsome face? Even one such post would have spelled doom.

^^^ haha, my son would never, never, never “friend” anyone that I would send his way!

MaryAnn, sorry about Marist, but all hope is not lost. Also, your son has some good choices if it does not work out.

Mary Ann, let’s use the “sour grapes” analogy, your S has been deferred, Marist gives crappy aid anyway! If admitted, you might not be able to afford to send him anyway, if a very good FA package is what your family needs!

For Marist - Average percentage of Need Met = 71%
Percentage of Freshmen with need FULLY MET = 26%

Your S has a lot of good choices though, like NEM has pointed out! Although I will caution you, last spring Elmira College gave our D the worst FA package out of all of her acceptances. Thank goodness she did not want to attend!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement.

yabeyabe2 - How do I find Marist’s Common Data Set? I searched the Marist website last night but could not find any data on deferred studends being accepted.

MaryAnn - is Marist your son’s top choice. Deferred is not the same as not getting in. They may just want to see midterm grades. I’m not sure what percentage they accept under EA…

This is as close to a common data set as I could find online, but I believe I saw a form on their site that could be filled out for more information. This shows average GPA and SATs for 2007 and years prior. Click admissions your left:

http://www.marist.edu/ir/pdfs/factbook.pdf

This shows acceptance rate for 2008 and it is rather low, IMO:

http://www.marist.edu/ir/factbook/pdfs/Applicant.pdf

Colleges are all supposed to make them accessbile, but many do not. You can try going to the Marist website’s search function, or Googling “Marist + common data set” or there might be a thread on CC with a link (using the CC search function".

The Marist-specific forum is another possibility.

If you have Naviance, the link to Marist from there might be helpful.

And your calling admissions cannot hurt.

Good luck.

I don’t think the common data sets show the eventual acceptance rate for those who apply EA but are deferred. Could be wrong about that, however.

You may well be right and that would be one more argument for a call from the parent or GC.

At some schools, I could imagine any or all of gender; race; and asking for FA playing a role in being admitted after deferral, depending on the rest of the applicant pool

MaryAnn - S also got deferred from Marist…I don’t know if it’s first choice for you but please remember that they are dealing with a record number of applications.
For us, although I don’t think it is his first choice, but after 3 wins, he didn’t expect that letter… I just told him that he will hear later from them, it’s not a rejection and reminded him of the acceptances that did come in so far. Peps

MaryAnn and Peps sorry about the deferrals. It can be a shock when your kid has been on an EA acceptance roll to come up against a school that “didn’t get the memo” on our fabulous kids.

Just wanted to share that DS received his grades (sem1 grade 9) today and earned a 3.29. 3 As…in PE and his 2 (academic) electives. Bs in algebra, science and math and a C in Spanish. I am quite pleased! Our kids can’t take AP classes until their Junior year and he is likely to take only 3 at the most of the 5 which are offered so nothing is weighted. He hasn’t earned over a 3.0 since he started getting letter grades in 4th grade so this is some good stuff!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Disappointments are part of the process.

historymom, very nice! That kind of uptick is so soothing.

historymom, that’s nice. And he’s only at the very beginning of his HS career.

Bummer on the deferrals. Let’s hope 7th semester grades do the trick!

Congrats to Historyson and to Historymom for being on top of this in 9th grade. It’s certainly better to stay on top than to dig oneself out of a hole.

Yay historymom’s son, and the rest of our kids!

Oh, refer to my post #2473, the kiddo made the Dean’s List for Fall Semester.
Definitely in the right school, great fit, what a complete turnaround!

Good Job SLUson!! Is making the dean’s list SR year a form of procrastination or has he done it before now? ;)

Schmoo…since my DDs just began their first year in college this fall the poor boy has no chance. I have headed into his high school career forearmed with information I didn’t figure out for the other two until summer before Junior year. Fortunately with CC and this thread as an outlet, the boy doesn’t have to be pestered. He can just go about playing his sports, getting his school work done and hanging with friends while I educate myself about how to help him get where he wants to get one day behind the scenes.

I am very grateful to Ready to Roll for starting this thread as it has helped sooth my worries about his chances for acceptance and I hope some of you with 10ers will still hang-out with those of us with younger kids and share your collective experiences. This is one of my top 5 favorite CC threads.

historymom, what are the 4 other threads in your Fave Five?
