New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

Just for a cross-reference to the rankings thread, I think this kind of thing is an excellent example of the harm that rankings do. It makes no sense for colleges to encourage applications from students they are likely to turn down; it’s a waste of time, money and anxiety for all parties. However, as long as ranking systems reward low admit rates, there’s an obvious incentive to do it.

Thought I would add to nightchef’s remarks about Hampshire College, one of kids’ friends enrolled there, lived in a lounge all school year, due to housing shortage. This student came home every weekend, not a great freshman year ('09-'10). Yes, there are plenty of single rooms there, but they can’t make them into forced doubles. If school doesn’t accurately predict their freshmen enrollment, this can be a problem.

No engineering or football at High Point University.

Highpoint was one of the possibilities for Rodney, not FTCdad; a friend’s son thought their Communications department was very good

oops, must have gotten lost in the posts:)

No problem–it happens to all of us!

As we hand the baton over to the class of 2015 parents and kids, if everyone could find the time to write up their visit reports (now called Campus Vibe reports)–especially now that people have more comparative impressions and second visits, I believe we will be doing a real service to future CC’ers.

With so many of us looking at small schools without many prior visit reports, I remember how hard it was, for example, to decide which PA or MD schools should be on a first swing.

I second that yabeyabe2!! Please write them up for us HS Class of 2011!!

I believe I pretty much did Visit Reports as we went along, although a few might be from Class of '09. Having two applicants back to back can get a little confusing, as to where did I visit and with who? (or is it whom?) I have been to UCONN & St. Lawrence many times as we had children there, but never did a visit report for those two schools.

That NACAC list with schools that still have room is up now, I see. I thought the Common App people also did one each year.

Can anyone tell me about this school? I’m looking for schools for a B student - boy - interested possibly in a business major. I liked a lot of what I saw on the website - majors/minors look promising/90% live on campus and housing is guaranteed/campus looks attractive and safe - but would like to hear from anyone who attends or knows someone who attends as to their impressions. Thanks.

SLUMom where did you find that list. It is still early for me and I haven’t had my second cup of tea but darned if I could find it.

^^ I think this is it.

I attend plays there and know some students. The campus is pretty; compact; and in a very nice, very affluent suburb with varied restaurants and good train access to NYC. It is best known for its theater program.

It is very expensive and, as a result, the student body may lack economic diversity. Kids who are there like it. It is not a suitcase school. Newark Airport is an easy drive.

The business program is relatively new and small and seemed to emphasize finance. My son is interested in marketing or advertising, so we did not pursue it. PM me if you want to know which similar schools with business programs we liked or considered.

Drew is frequently used as a safety, so its yield on accepted kids is very low–making ED very a much easier pool. It does accept B students.

Rockvillemom, Drew seems to be one of those schools that is over 50k/year and will gap you quite a bit! We also had a very unprofessional experience with them for the last admissions cycle. D received a Priority App & she did it online in January, met the deadline & everything. A couple weeks later she received a letter saying her application was complete & they were reviewing it. (this was about beginning of February) The next time we heard from Drew admissions, D received a denial letter (folded up the wrong way) on April 28th in the mail! Well, she didn’t want to go there to begin with, but they just messed this up so much! Some Priority, you know! Since then, I see they replaced their head of Admissions! (probably with good reason).

That might make a great thread “Schools that cost 40-50k Plus & Gap You” LOL…

yabeyabe, does that mean we 2014 parents have to leave this thread?? do we have a new home??? :)

Please don’t leave!! I for one was counting on your wisdom and experience!

HollieSue - my husband is en route there with D for visit tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing all about it. The contact I’ve had with them so far has been very efficient and helpful - esp as I booked the airfare then realized they had no tours due to finals and they kindly set something up to accommodate MY mistake!
They are also visiting St Joseph’s in Philly and Ursinus. Any info would be helpful…anyone?!

happy64, We visited Ursinus in the late summer last year. On the way there (literally, in the car) my son tells me that he doesn’t want to major in the one major that they have that I thought would suit him. Lovely tour, pretty campus but it didn’t suit our son.

You’ve got three fairly different colleges to visit. I’m familiar with most of the ones in the area between St. Joe’s and Ursinus. What do you want to know? I guess they don’t have time to visit Arcadia? [Arcadia University - Visitors & Community Resources](About Arcadia | Arcadia University) It’s right between St. Joe’s and Ursinus… A good friends son is a Junior at Drew. I understand that it’s pretty preppy and yes, gaps quite a bit. Friends son does like it a lot though and has gotten internships during the summers.

Thanks Kathiep. So far we (collectively!) have visited -
American - definite no
Univ. of Mary Washington - very firm Yes please!
Goucher - meh!
St Edwards (Austin) - in state so, NO!
Baldwin-Wallace - definite maybe
College of Wooster - definite maybe

still to come in summer is, last but not least, Univ of Puget Sound…

I will look up Arcadia immediately as they don’t come home till Saturday.

We had pretty unpleasant dealings with Drew in this year’s admission cycle. Horrible tour. Horrible. The students all seemed miserable, the tour guide was an idiot, there were wanted posters all over the campus (there had been an on-campus sexual assault). The admissions office didn’t respond in a timely fashion to questions and they gapped massively. I do, however, know people who are very happy there, so perhaps we just had a bad day.

Anyone considered Fairleigh-Dickinson? It’s right next door to Drew and quite nice of a campus. My D’s best friends since pre-school will be attending, and my nephew and his wife are graduates from about four years ago. Had a great experience, both did 5-year master’s programs.
