re George Mason - I have a friend whose daughter will be afreshman there in the fall. At first I was questionning this choice - thinkingit was more of a commuter school - but apparently that has changed a bit in the past 2-3 years and a number of students do live on campus. Take a look.

Happy,

One note about strong theater schools–if she is not going to be an aspiring actress/waitress, she may be crowded out of classes and roles by those who do.

happy64, what about Ithaca College (NY) ?

We live just down the road from St. Joe’s --pretty campus, accessible to Philly and Main Line area–we’ve had several sitters over years past from SJU–wonderful girls!! Happy, capable, bright. I think St. Joe’s is a very nice school. Hope that helps!

1sokkermom: Thanks, I will look at U of Scranton

I will also look at Towson.

It looks like George Mason has a lot of new dorms, maybe changing from a commuter school. I looked into it because an acquaintance mentioned her son was there, OOS so not commuter, and the price is right.

Drexel was on the list originally, then I took it off because of all the comments about the safety of the area. Now I am thinking we should at least visit.

Actually Ithaca would be an interesting “out of the box” idea for tvheadmom’s son too. True, it’s not in a city, but Ithaca’s actually a pretty good-sized town. IC is not too small (about 6K undergrads as I recall), has a popular business program, and the architecture and campus vibe are fairly modern.

Yabeyabe- that is the main reason my d took Muhlenberg off her list!

For those seeking comic relief, I started a Parents Thread on why you feel ancient reading CC. Rockville and Nightchef have already contributed funny bits.

TV head. Emmanuel has a prominent glass highrise on campus.
He’ll love it. It’s actually a MERCK research site that Emmanuel leases the space to. A savvy business move by the president Sr. Janet Eisner. It’s in Boston, but gated and they take their security very seriously. Not specifically business, but they do have a management, economics track and have the option of attending classes in any of the 5 Fenway colleges. My B student is headed there in the Fall.

Happy Mother’s Day to all…!!

As a student with a 3.0-3.3 gpa, I think it is worth noting (though I’m sure it’s been noted already) that SAT/ACT scores/GPAs aren’t everything. According to Naviance and posted stats from all the colleges I applied to, I only should’ve gotten into my safeties. I got into 10 schools (8 reaches).

Best of luck to all.

^^alisa: can you share which schools you are referring to and stats for the upcoming parents and students on this thread?

Write great essays. Tell a great story about yourself. I had a really rough time fresh+soph years due to severe emotional stress.
Boston University (attending)

Alisa, congratulations and best of luck!

Thank you! Same to you and your children!

Hey its my first post on the site, my dad has posted a couple of things in this thread before but I have a question for some of you experienced parents.

Due to the fact that we were both under the impression that the SAT deadline was May 7th, I went to sign up for the June SAT on the 5th however when I went to pick a test center in my area the closest test center was a little under 75 miles away. Do you guys think I will have a chance to take the ACT, SAT IIs and most likely retake the SAT before I send out my applications for schools next year, as I will not be taking the SAT II in June?

FlownTheCoop - You might want to reconsider taking the SAT 2’s on June 5th while the material is fresh in your mind. You can take the ACT June 12th. If you do well enough on the ACT you might not have to take the SAT in the fall. If you do want to take the SAT in the fall you have all summer to prep for it.

I know 75 miles is quite a distance to travel early in the morning, but I would do it inorder to get as much testing out of the way as possible. All the tests will be offered in the fall, but you might not have a chance to retake again before you submit apps.

Are you sure you need the SAT II’s? NONE of the colleges on my son’s list ask for an SAT II. While it’s the norm on this forum to take them, most colleges do not ask for them.

This link may help identify schools that ask for it: http://www.highereducationstation.org/articles/2008/2008_09_SAT_II_Subject_Tests.pdf

Also, if you do take the ACT, make sure you take the optional writing section.

Very good points by Kathiep and Mamom. If you are going to take them, take them while fresh. Remember that the schools you now think you will apply to may not be your final list. Also, if you feel you doing better this year than previously, a good SAT II score–even if not necessary–may help.

My recollection is that you are interested in engineering–my guess, but it is only that, is that such schools may want one or more SAT IIs.

I was wondering about the SAT IIs. My son’s GC has not even mentioned them and none of the schools he is looking at seem to require them. How necessary are they?
