New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

As mentioned by Kathiep, there is an active thread for parents of students graduating HS in 2011.

There are also two other threads for students graduating in 2012 and 2013 and if you child/children are in that group, you might want to consider posting in those threads.

thanks

I am new to this but have been readig the threads on a regular basis. S1 is trying to narrow a list down. HS class 2011. His SAT is 1330 (700 CR and 630 M). (Broke all odds and improved the CR score but recevied the SAME math score on retest). He attends a well respected, Jesuit school where students do not self-select honnors or AP classes and no beating on the door will bet you in if you are not selected by the department. Has taken Jr. H math (B) and will take Sr. H gov’t and econ. 3.3 unweighted with steady improveement since Freshman year. with 3.7 last semester jr. year annd 3.5 sr. year. Would love a strong business program and wants to be near or in a big city. From florida. Any thoughts?

Questioningmom, please post your question on 2011 HS class forum, you will find a lot of activity there and that thread will continue till the end of 2011 school cycle. You will not get much response in this thread.

Click on the link below and it will take you to that forum

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/939933-3-0-3-3-gpa-parents-thread-2011-hs-graduation.html</a></p>

There is also a west coast thread.

can you add the link? thanks

great school nice kids nice professors nice admissions wonderful business school my son will be attending fall 2011 we just returened from visit and interview we were so thrilled with everything and thank God not a party school either.lots of successful people have come out of that school.also the professors are in touch with the real world not just makeing money off there text books.refreshing perfect speed for my son.my son is an average grade student who works very hard and is a jock the SAT?ACT do not refect at all the type of student he is very sad.he attends a very tough private high school no weighted classes at all no fluff classes either you cannot take AP or honors classes of any kind unless you have a 95 and above avg in every class every semester.he is a well rounded kid who will be sucessful in anything he does and the only school that he felt comfortable at was Susquehanna.

Chippy, my son is a freshman at Susquehanna. Your impressions are correct (I note that the workload is rigorous and, with small classes in every subject, there is no place to hide). Everyon eis very friendly and down to earth.

Best of luck to your son.

West coast

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/907349-western-schools-3-0-3-3-kid.html</a></p>

chippy - I’m a little confused - it’s only mid-October - are you saying your son already has an acceptance at Susquehanna? How is that possible? I know they do rolling admissions, but was under the impression that no decisions were released before December. Would you please clarify?

You wrote that you just returned from a visit and interview - but you also state that he will be attending fall 2011?

Oh, rockvillemom, let’s keep this thread going, I miss all my buddies on this one… LOL…

Way too confusing to have both of these threads active. I’m also confused by chippy who posted this yesterday:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1065746629-post40.html</a>

kathiep - I hear you - I was also confused by her post re SU acceptance for son - sounds like a mother posting - and then the one you referenced - where she writes as if she is a current Furman student. Very puzzling.

Hi everyone! When I saw this, I immediately thought of my son. He is currently a junior in HS in NY. He has taken mostly high school classes through HS, but no AP’S He will probably have a 3.5 weighed GPA at the end of the year, which probably equals a 3.2-3.3 unweighed GPA. He did track for two years and won a couple medals for those years. He has done over 200 combined community service hours at his local library, which resulted in him getting an after school job working 3 days a week. He is also very involved at his church. He has been an altar server for 6 years, and have delivered roses in conjunction with his local church to the elderly in the community. The thing that makes him semi-unique is that he went to preschool for 2 years. He had a speech problem that the teachers thought he wasn’t ready to go to kindergarden, so we kept him back for another year. He then took speech classes from K-4th grade and it’s been amazing how far he has come from then. He also has perfect attendance since 2nd grade so he has been getting a few awards from his school for that. He is currently in the National Honor Society, Business honor society, and most likely science honor society. He just took the SAT, but he is not the greatest test taker so we won’t know if he is going to do good on it or not. Our family income is pretty low since my husband is retired and I have been laid off 3 times in the last 4 years. He is looking to major in political science and eventually go to law. Does anyone have any colleges that my son could apply to?

Hi Jonny
Your son seems like a great young man.

Given your understandable cost concerns, would the one of the SUNY schools be your best option? Given your belief that your son will seek law school after college, you are looking at 7 years of cost. Although there are certainly excellent private school and out of state public school options, would you want your son to face huge loan debts 7 years from now?

I do not know what the admission standards are at, for example, SUNY Albany and Buffalo, but I imagine your guidance counselor does.

My son had similar stats and was offered very good merit aid at Hartwick College in Oneonta. Great little school and made it to our short list. The sticker price is high, but they tend to be generous with aid and very friendly.

To the mods: does it make sense to lock this up since another one has been opened for 2012 grads?

people can still search it but it is getting cumbersome for new CC’ers…

here is the link to the 2012 thread

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/939935-3-0-3-3-gpa-parents-thread-2012-hs-graduation.html</a></p>

There is a thread for 2013 also for interested parents

I agree with Rodney, Mods

Agree also. We could also just post that link ^ every time someone asks a question here.

Is there a 3.0 to 3.3 thread for HS Class of 2013? Can’t find it.
