New 3G IPhone- Anyone wait in line?

Okay, so here’s something I’m not wild about with the iPhone - no speed dialing that I can see. With my RZR, I open the phone (which takes no time at all), hit 1# and the dial button (three moves that total probably 1 or 2 seconds tops) and call who I want to call (with some people, it’s a two digit number, but still very fast) in an instant. With the iPhone, I have to hit a button at the top, wait for the wallpaper screen, slide over the unlock, hit “favorites” and then the person I want to call’s name to get the list of numbers for that person, then hit the number I want to call, and then another hit to call, for six moves total that take WAY longer than just entering in the speed dial number. :(

There should be an application where the person’s photo is one of the homepage icons and you just hit that and it calls the person (and that allows different photos for that person at home, the lab, the dorm, etc. for the one person to have multiple speed dial photos). Does anyone know if anyone has such an app for the new (or old) iPhone?

Both my son and I have had iPhones for roughly a year now. I work for a software company in a position that requires me to work with nearly all of the new phones - and I would not trade my old iPhone for any of them… The user interface is incredibly well done, the integration to wifi allows me to surf at high speed nearly all of the time, and Apple’s customer service has been outstanding.

I ran into a configuration problem with my phone - trying to set up multiple email accounts - and the apple support guys at the Apple store were able to work through a very complicated setup in about 45 minutes.

My son had a problem with the wifi reception in his phone - Apple simply handed him a new phone. This seems to be their unwritten policy - if it isn’t working and there are no obvious signs of abuse, replace it after trying to fix it for a few minutes.

The other obvious advantage - despite the challenges yesterday - Apple updates the software regularly - for free and with the click of a button. None of the other cell phone providers come close. I think that the App Store that is now open is going further transform the market - putting Apple even further out ahead.

Will I buy a new phone? Almost certainly - I need to stay current for work. My old one will probably be passed down to my daughter… But I will wait a few days - no need to stand in line since I have plenty to play with on my old one now that the software is updated…

I just came back from a mall with an Apple store. The line was all the way across the mall – the longest I’ve ever seen outside the Christmas shopping season.

I’ll stick with my old technology for the moment, though.

Well, I did it. I went to ATT store- no line. They ran out, but I ordered one. The young man (child) who helped me was courteous and the whole process was painless, except for the hit to my credit card! It will be here in about 3-5 business days. I will sell my Blackberry Curve on ebay.

For someone who has a Verizon family plan with unlimited text, how much would switching to ATT *really *cost? It seems that purchasing a reasonable number of minutes, add the data plan, AND having to add the costs of text messages makes this a very expensive gadget to own over the long run.

I am only considering the IPhone because I will spend the next year in a area that is not very Verizon friendly and has been optimized for ATT. The purchase of the phone and the wait is not as big an issue as seemingly very high cost for basic services.

By the way, I thought Verizon Wireless web site was not very good; I changed my mind when looking at ATT. Their Premier Store is simply awful and what’s the deal of having to go through a business account and **talk **to someone? If it is so hard to get straight answers and totals, one can only shudder at what happens when there is a problem.

Now I understand why my parents dropped ATT and won’t ever go back to them. I offered them to take over the entire family plan and they turned me down in five seconds flat. As soon as I tolf them the IPhone worked only on ATT, the only thing I heard was “good luck!”

Just like putting up with the Apple loonies won’t be enough! :D

I’ve had ATT family plan forever, and haven’t had any problems. I think the coverage is good and I’ve had good luck with service and online support. WildChild tends to break phones, so we do a lot of warranty stuff. My work Blackberry is Verizon, but I don’t ever have to deal directly with them. I always thought the ATT plans were less than Verizon, but the Iphone is a different animal.

Wanted to get one for daughter so hubby could have her phone. Our stores were all sold out and wouldn’t let us preorder or reserve from next shipment. Basically told me you have to come in daily and hope they have them. Of course, the stores in our area are both 45 minutes away. Guess we’ll wait.
Not to be too dense but what is push email?

Push email is when it shows up on the device at about the same time it hits the server without you having to go to a website and logon and download it. It operates just like your computer, Outlook etc. Without “push”, if you want to get your email you have to go to a website and logon and download it.

Oh I have that I just didn’t know it was called that! I am so high tech that I even have blackberry messenger with my son now that he told me it exists and walked me through using it :)

Yes, but do understand that Apple invests millions and millions of dollars into marketing to convince people that they need an IPhone. Apparently they have achieved their goal.

My DH has the original iPhone. He downloaded the new software to his phone the other day and has been playing with it since. My FIL, also an owner of an original iPhone decided he needed a new computer the other day; unfortunately, it was the same day the new phone was released. FIL walked into the Apple Store to find a huge line. He told one of the workers he was just there to buy a computer. They told him they couldn’t help him … they were dealing with phones only that day.

This is the 3rd day I’ve had the phone. I didn’t have the original iPhone, so I can’t compare. But this is nice - surfing the internet is very easy, the ability to be able to manage multiple browsers is amazing. Watching Youtube is very clear and I like having my pictures and music on it. I just need to learn to type better - I must have the fattest fingers.:frowning: My daughter also loves her phone too.

MomofWildChild, how are you liking your iPhone so far? How does it compare to your Blackberry?

I personally love mine, but I know you are a big Blackberry fan and I’m wondering how the iPhone compares for you.

I’ve had it for 5 days now and I like it a lot. The store was really good about setting up my email etc. WildChild got his a few days after I did and his store (in Phila) didn’t help him at all (what a surprise…NOT). Anyway, I think it is a lot more fun than the Blackberry and a lot better for viewing internet pages. The typing is a lot harder, but I’m getting used to it. (I still have my work Blackberry). Making my own ringtones from songs on my itunes is really fun. I have assigned “Back When I Knew it All” as the ringtone for WildChild. I like the text messaging graphics and have already added the AIM and facebook applications. I haven’t had a problem with the battery life, which was one of the criticisms. I made it through a long workday today playing with it (in the field doing so had some car time etc as a passenger) and it made it all day. I think it’s a pretty neat device. So far, so good. Stay tuned.
