New Admits--Advice from mom of 2 Terps....

There’s no set criteria, and no minimum GPA. Scholars seems to lean a lot toward kids with high grades and high community service. D2 was in the Scholars program, and it was a great start to her college experiences. If you are offered admission to Scholars, the people in the Scholars program are great, and you can arrange to talk to a student currently in Scholars if you go visit the campus…but I’d wait until you get the invite. The Scholars ambassador program helps to get current students in touch with prospective Scholars students.

Great info! Where can we apply for housing without confirming enrollment? UMD is definitely an option for me, but I won’t hear back from 75% of my schools until April 1st.

Also, do you have any information about the Honors College and the LLCs within them?

Housing application is on the bottom of the front page (right below the decision link). We filled it out and submitted it yesterday :)

How can you fill out housing app now though if in CP Scholars program and not sure which one of the specific learning-living programs you’ll be placed in? Wouldn’t that affect which dorm you’re assigned? Or should he fill out the app now and get assigned later? I’m confused about the process. Thanks

Yes I’m also confused. I’m in the Honors college and I’m hoping to be in the Integrated Life Sciences program, so I’ll be assigned to La Plata.
Also, are you sure we don’t have to pay before submitting this, and it’s non-binding? Even though this is my top choice, my mom really wants me to get the B/K scholarship in order to come here.

To the last 2 posters, yes, you can register for housing. Whether you are in Scholars or Honors will work out later when they start assigning rooms (in the summer). D1 was in a triple in an Honors dorm because at that time you had to pay the deposit for accepting in order to apply for housing (and she didn’t make her final decision for UMD until late April). Thankfully they changed that a few years ago so that it is non-binding to apply for housing now. If you decide not to attend UMD, be nice and tell the housing people in addition to telling the admissions people…

Thank you for responding. On the housing form does it also ask you to pick a meal plan?
a) I’m a normal eater. I usually eat a small breakfast (oatmeal or cereal), a sandwich for lunch, and dinner. What do you think is the best meal plan for me?
b) Let’s say I do become a B/K scholar. I know those people get a meal plan, so if I choose one now will that just be revoked if I get the scholarship, so I can go with the meal plan provided?
c) Are terpbucks really that useful?

I’ll let someone more familiar with current meal plans/terpbucks answer, as we’ve been off the meal plan for the last 3 years since D2 has been in an apt in Language House.

So to clarify the housing form – can my daughter fill it out now and wait to see what Honors program she is assigned to? Do you have to pay the depost in order to send in housing? Thanks.

Astrophysicsmom,
Do you have any idea if it is possible to get accepted to two LEP, such as Engineering and Business in order to get a double major in both? I know it is not possible when applying but is it possible later on? How would a student go about doing this as I noticed that your daughters both had double majors? At Maryland Marquee day, some of the business majors indicated that this was possible. The engineering majors basically said "why would you want to do that?’.

This may be a dumb question, but when the housing form asks for preferences for dorms based on gender (mixed, single gender by floor, all one gender), it wants us to rank our choices, correct? I’m assuming 1 is first choice, 2 is second choice, 3 is last choice.

jchamberlain, I suspect that if you apply to another LEP after you’re already a student (and have a 4.0 or close GPA), you could get into another LEP. They would want to make sure you could handle the work if you committed to two. Both of my D’s will/did graduate with double degrees (more hours than double major, thanks to AP courses), and I don’t think it was until junior year that each made that an official “intent”, though each stayed with their original plan of 2 degrees from the time they entered UMD…but neither were in LEPs.

yes, rapunzel 1 is first choice. There are very few female dorms, and I’m not sure how many single gender by floor they have either. Usually it is guys down one end of the hall and girls at the other…single sex bathrooms.

Astrophysicsmom,
Might you have an idea as to the amount of scholarship $ offered by AGNR? My D has been accepted into Honors College, Humanities, and just received a Presidential scholarship, but only $5,000 over 4 years. We’re OOS and hoping for more aid. Also, what can you tell me about the Quidditch club?

Hey not sure if this has been answered, but if you sign up for housing and don’t attend, is there some kind of payment penalty, or are you stuck paying something anyway? I’m filling out housing now and it makes it seem like submitting the form forces you to pay

If you sign up for housing and don’t attend, you can get a refund on your housing deposit, I’m sure there are deadlines, etc. you can check into.

RE: quidditch, check this out: UMD’s quidditch team is currently ranked #2 (out of 160 mostly US, but also teams from Canada, Australia, England, France, Scotland and NZ)…

[Standings | International Quidditch Association](http://www.internationalquidditch.org/standings/)

Yes, it’s a real sport, co-ed contact sport that requires lots of practices at UMD, and D has been in the best physical conditioning of her life while playing Quidditch there…with a very close-knit group on their team.

astrophysicsmom - thanks for the info! Congrats to your D and the team this year!
