New American Idol thread

Maybe it’s my imagination, but it seemed that the judges favorites were typically in the second half in the run up to the final 13.

I missed tonight too. How in the world could Matt be in the bottom 3 unless people think he’s safe and don’t vote for him. I only voted once for him last night…guess I’d better get voting next week.
Gotta go watch the tape.

None of the women were in the bottom three? (although Allison didn’t belong in the bottom 3). Could this be a gender imbalance issue? With only three females left, there may be plenty of male voters that are making up for it.

Megan should have been sent home. She was horrible last night compared to the others. I also wondered how Matt got to the bottom three. He was great last night and had among the best performances. Matt was first to sing last night. Are people giving greater weight to singers towards the end of the show? Are many people joining the show after it has already started? It will be interesting to see if any trends can be identified.

I don’t get what people hate about Megan, actually, she’s my favorite.

Maybe it’s an either you like it or you don’t, but frankly she’s the only one that’s offering something different from what’s “out there” already (except possibly Adam - if he keeps it up like he did this week)

To me, at least, the judge’s favorites (Danny, Lil, Anoop?), no doubt they have great vocals, but I don’t see them standing out at all if they just had an album, without the publicity from the show.

Hers is the only album I’d buy, though I’d probably consider Adam’s or Allison’s (Depending on what they put out)

I like Megan’s quirkiness - kind of like a Katy Perry or Tristan Prettyman - but she Cannot Sing on Key to save her life!!

If she could hit the notes, I’d want her to stay, but she’s terrible!!

In my opinion, in addition to Megan’s lack of vocal skills and abilities it seems to me that she doesn’t really take this competition too seriously - “whatever” type attitude. Like Anoop said on Weds. you shouldn’t be up there on the stage if you not in it to win it.

Most of all, the worst is not that she is still there, but that others (for instance Alexis) are NOT there.

I don’t mind her quirkiness, and she is gorgeous, but she has huge pitch problems. She was singing Wednesday night like she couldn’t hear herself. She was completely off key. Singing off key doesn’t stop someone from becoming a major recording artist though - expecially if they are cute and blonde - so we may see more of her after Idol. They can correct her technical problems in the studio.

Yeah, and then when she tours she can lip sinc with the best of them!! lol

Of all of the contestants this year Adam is the only one I could imagine paying money to see. I like Alison but she is so much like a lot of other singers (Kelly Clarkson). None of them but Adam seem to be musical artists to me.

I’m not a musician, but I didn’t think she was off key at all. There were some bad notes, but not any more than you see on the show typically (or in a lot of other live performances)

I do have issue with the atrocious backup arrangement. She could have left that out.

I am definitely rooting for Anoop and a couple of other guys who sing soulful songs.

I really dislike all that ‘screaming’ coming from the females in the group this season. Way too much ‘screaming’! I need to say that twice. I really hope some of these screamers realize that soul touching music flows with melody and not with screaming aloud.

The blonde who sang ‘Rocking Robin’ needs the boot. She has a better career with modelling than singing. It’s too much sex appeal and very little talent with her, IMO.

Megan, Megan, Megan…

I was a big fan of Megan’s, as well. Emphasis on was. This is the second week in a row, where she showed the unique quality of her vocals in the prep with the mentor (Smokey, this time) and proceeded to show virtually none of it in her actual performance. Instead, she just belted out the song. Belting out songs is not what she’s about… How come she doesn’t know it???

Smokey said “if she does it just like she did tonight”, she’d be great. He said she was really unique. Then she goes out there, and does nothing unique at all, and doesn’t do it like she did for him at all.

And, yes, that strange body movement she makes is annoying.

She deserves to go, even though it breaks my heart.

Adam was amazing. And I loved Anoop, Matt and Chris as well. The girls are all singing just like each other, showing nothing special.

Didn’t anyone else hate the charade of the judges deciding whether to use their “save” on Michael? No way were they going to do that. He’s one of the weakest there. What’s up with telling the performer that it all depends on how they re-sing their song? It doesn’t depend on that at all. Just have the judges announce Save/No Save. Then, go with a good bye sing out, as in the past.

I still don’t think she’s off key. It’s exactly like Randy Travis said the week before, she tweaks the notes in a lot of unexpected ways. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s not formulaic that turns people off, but except for the places where she really does hit bad notes, it’s part of the uniqueness.

And, frankly, ALL of them hit bad notes. This group is much better with that than seasons past, but even the judge’s darlings get off key occasionally.

The thing is that technical issues can be smoothed out with any decent vocal coach. You can’t coach talent (most of the contestants are quite talented) and you can’t coach uniqueness (which, as far as I’m concerned, is sorely lacking from most of them)

Megan would probably be served well by toning it down a bit, though - I agree she’s not a “belt it out” type.

I hate the whole “save” idea now. It was a good idea in principle, but they’re only using it as a tool for adding more drama to the show.

I think it’s cruel too. You tell people they’ve been rejected…and force them to sing, only to reject them again? Can’t they show them a bit more respect than that?

On Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew (highly recommended) The voters determine the bottom two. The judges then choose who is to go. I like that system a lot better as they can take the current performance into account as well as the previous ones.

Megan seems to stray off key in the lower notes.

What I can’t stand about Megan is what others say they like about her, what makes her different and gives her her own style. Kind of like an Eartha Kitt thing, or even Joss Stone in her duet with Smokey. Is it that she drags out her vowel sounds? Can’t quite nail what it is. This works for Joss Stone, and works better for an Eartha Kitt. But Megan’s use of this tactic covers up the fact that she can’t sing conventionally so she needs a gimmick. Like a mediocre singer trying to do an E. Kitt immitation (sorry I can’t think of another example) and failing miserably.

That last performance of Megan’s was a mess through and through for me. She sounded a touch flat throughout the entire song to me. Maybe it’s because she reminds me of opera singers who have developed wobbles - the right pitch might be in there but it’s surrounded on both sides by wrong ones.

Okay, I’m just joining this thread and read only the first, and the last two pages. I’m on my first American Idol season, and enjoying it. I particularly like Adam’s originality, but a more Idol-experienced friend says he will not win. I also like Danny, and somewhat like Lil, Kris and Anoop.

Top 9 tonight.

I am here!!!
