New car requirements. Can you help me out?

^^We have a deposit on the X, but Mr. really, really hesitant about getting a car that would trigger $$ envy at work. So it does not look like we are going to get one. But it does have automatic closing pax doors that can be controlled by the driver.

My son’s talking me into the Tesla X. I might just do it. I still get the $7,500 credit on this one

That Tesla X is a really nice looking car. If you are going to drive a van…get the top one!

We are currently looking for a vehicle for DH. One of our problems is that DH is almost 6’4" so basically we need a car with good head and legroom for the driver. However one thing I have noticed is that some have very little leg room in the back seats. That really doesn’t work for us because we have boys. My point is to make sure and sit in the back seats and think about how tall your passengers are going to be.

MG, two worlds for your hubby: Model X. It sits 6 adults comfortably.

I was going to recommend the Volvo XC90. Good looking vehicle. We’ve had great success with Volvos and have found them VERY reliable.

As far as closing the doors from the driver’s seat, if you are talking little kids in car seats do you really need that feature? I mean you do need to get the kids buckled in and out of the car seat and make sure they are well secured anyway, right?

“Also my husband thinks we should wait for the 2017 model because “you lose a year of driving by buying a 2016”. I think we should wait until just before the 17 model comes out and buy an end of model one. Which makes more sense?”

If you are the type to hang onto your vehicles for awhile I think your position of waiting until the end of the model year and getting a discount makes sense. It’s always what we’ve done to save some bucks.

Right. When buckling in the kids we then close the door. But they grow and buckle themselves in pretty soon.

THe Volvo XC90 does look nice. If I can just resist this peer pressure for the Tesla X

“Need the seven seats unless there is one that seats 6. When my son’s family comes to visit, there are six of us. Would prefer to go all in one car.”

Are you buying a 7-seat car just for those few occasions when they come to visit, or are you anticipating that those seats will be filled frequently in your everyday driving? Apologies if you’ve said this and I missed it.

I think you want a Sienna. It has everything you need, including 7 usable seats. The middle back seat is the only one that’s tight, but my husband and I once took 5 teenage boys on a road trip and they were all pretty comfortable. The only thing I hate about my Sienna is the run-flat tires. They are noisy, wear down quickly, expensive and need to be replaced as often as every 2 years, depending on how much you drive. But that is my only complaint, and I’ve had mine for over 5 years. Maybe the new models don’t use run-flats.

I love that Tesla, but it is not what I would buy for a family travel mobile. I’d get the car…for myself!

I had a Volvo XC 60 as a loaner for a week. It’s smaller, but I loved it. The XC90 is a great car too and has the size you want. But no auto side doors.

I don’t know about the hatch situation…or auto doors…but if you end up looking at SUV type cars…everyone I know with the BMW loves it. I know folks with the 3 and 5.

Mostly for when they visit. But they come often. Probably six times a year. Also, my other son lives in town and also has two kids, soon to be three. Not unheard of to need more than the five seats I have now.

I couldn’t justify a Tesla just for myself. Or I’d get the little one. But for my family, anything goes. Also, the $7,500 rebate is still available on this one and it would give us priority for the new one and my son could then qualify for the same rebate. That’s $15,000!!!

Maybe not fancy enough to meet your requirements, but my Honda Odyssey was my favorite automobile ever!

@MichiganGeorgia my husband is 6’4", and he drives a mercedes e350 and fits fine, and there’s a lot of room in the back. He also drives my Ford Flex with no problem because the seats move down and back father than any car we’ve owned, and the rear leg room in my car is staggeringly good.

We’ve found that japanese cars consistently do not offer enough leg or headroom, and my H is always looking down through the windshield rather than out the windshield in those cars.

I just saw a Tesla X today while driving. Now, I will never be able to buy this vehicle, so maybe it is “sour grapes”. It’s not what I expected. A bit “fat” looking? I almost wish Tesla had created a straight vertical back instead of sloping. I love the Tesla S - absolutely gorgeous car. I didn’t have the same “wow” reaction seeing the X.

But these vehicles are so out of my league.

I really wish I could see it first. But the closest dealer is like 6 or 7 hours away. Can’t hurt to put a deposit though since it’s refundable and then maybe I can find someone who has one.

You will porbably not be able to see an X at the dealer. They are still being demoed and sold to folks who put the deposit down. We were lucky that there was a test drive event in our neck of the woods, and we got an invite. It would not hurt to call the showroom and ask.

I would at least call the dealer and ask if there is a demo event. It does hit on all your requirements. Definitely doesn’t look like a minivan or SUV. Since I saw it on the road, I didn’t see doors opening and closing. Just looking at it from the side, the doors look…like car doors (this is a good thing). It was the look of the back end that bothered me (as the car following the X) - probably not big thing to owners.

The X with “ludicrous” goes 0 to 60 in like 3 seconds. I am sure that accounted into the body design; there is no way a square back would have worked.

pretty susre I don’t need the ludicrous. The other benefit is that my son would like the Tesla 3 and if I got this we’d get a priority on that. Otherwise he’ll have to wait 2-3 years

Tesla’s “look” is to a great extent determined by aerodynamics; everything goes to keeping the range as far as possible. I just got my Model X (VIN #238) and while the looks aren’t awesome, I sit in the inside of the car and it is a stunning vehicle. There are a few teething pains in mine (one rattle, and one of the FaWDs sometimes sees a phantom obstruction and only opens 3/4 of the way). The Delivery Specialist pointed out one flaw in the metal work that I could feel with my fingers after it was pointed out but could not see, and there’s one paint flaw. Everything will be fixed when the part arrives.

The acceleration is insane (I didn’t go for Ludicruous). You could easily be perfectly happy with standard acceleration. Depending on your range requirements, you could go with the smaller (70kW) battery; the other battery is 90kW, and a 100kW battery is rumored to be announced soon. Range on my 90kW is ~250 miles.

The level of software integration is impressive. My wife says it’s like an iPhone and other cars are landlines. In the space of a week she has gone from being a doubter to considering getting one.

My kids drive XC60s; if you don’t need 7 seats, they are reliable (yes, they are!), safe yet fun, and incredibly comfortable. If I didn’t have a strong hankering for a Tesla X (I put my deposit down 2.5 years ago), I’d buy a new XC90. I only sat in one, but people I trust tell me it’s a game changer for Volvo.
