New Jahi McMath OP-ED from LA Times

And yet… it’s been nearly two years. Sad.

No words…

It’s weird. As an atheist, I don’t believe there’s anything sanctimonious about a dead body, and if I were a Christian, I think I’d feel the same way. They might as well be dragging around a dead cat.

But its creepy. And if the family ever wakes from this delusion, yes, it will be sad.

Can someone with more of a science background than me explain why the heck she’s not decomposing?

@WasatchWriter, you are correct. There are many Christians who find this situation very creepy. It’s not universally accepted that Christians reject the notion of brain death (as opposed to only accepting cardiac death as death).

I don’t think the family (specifically the mother, who seems to run the show) will ever accept reality, unless and until the child also experiences cardiac death.

Romani-
They are artificially keeping her organs functioning and nourished. She probably has some rudimentary brainstem function but no cortical brain activity. But they are making her other organs function. So sad.

@romanigypsyeyes same question!! Two years on life support… her appearance must have changed so radically that the parents must seeing things differently???

So does that mean that they can keep her body going forever? How would her heart eventually stop if they are doing everything to artificially keep all of her organs going? Would they throw her on bypass too?

If she is alive, she stands to collect way more than the $250K cap:

^^So according to this article, it is a violation of civil rights suit.

@parentofpeople, there was a similar case involving a four year old boy who was declared brain dead. His mother refused to take him off life support. IIRC, she viewed the spinal reflexes as proof that his brain was functioning at some level, which is incorrect. He lived on life support for twenty years. When he finally died, the autopsy showed his brain was nothing but a calcified little lump. Everything the mom had denied for two decades became perfectly obvious. But that kind of denial is very hard to crack.

When they did the autopsy on Terry Sciavo, they found that most of her brain had disappeared and her skull was full of water.

This poor child has been dead for over a year. Moreover, I’ve heard nothing to convince me that her death was anything but the sad fact that sometimes surgeries go wrong. That being said, $250K for medical malpractice leading to death seems to me to be aridiculously low compensation.

Did the dad decide to get that lawsuit filed before ther 2 year statute of limitations was up?

@jym626 thanks. That makes sense… At least as much sense as any of this can make

This whole thing is gross and speaks to the arrogance of her family. Af first, one could argue that they were in shock and denial, but after a short-time this turned into a disgusting and manipulative charade by her family.

they can’t possibly reasonably believe that she’s going to recover.

Who is paying for her care?

I’m sure her mother fervently believes she will recover. This is easy to understand. Her mother is clinging to the belieft that she will have her daughter again. I feel sorry for her in her delusion.

Shouldn’t they do an MRI to see what, if anything, is inside her skull?

If the California case actually proceeds and the judge orders another examination, it should be done by actual experts in the field (vs. some of the non experts-and I’m being generous-that the family referenced in their claims), should actually BE PERFORMED by these experts (vs. reading reports made by non experts in the field using non standard tests for brain integrity) and should be done exactly as law and standards of practice dictate.

I would be very curious to know if the mom has been shown any recent brain scans, MRI’s or anything else that would show extreme deteriorization. This mom seems to think that this is like a comatose person who hasn’t suffered severe brain injury and wakes up 10 years later.

Again, I understand thinking there will be a recovery…for awhile…but then reality should set in. My mom had several strokes over a 6 year period, before her last, fatal one. She was able to recover, remarkably, after the prior ones, so we naturally had hopes when she had her last one. After a few days, it became obvious to anyone with lingering doubts that this last stroke was too severe (location/extent) for mom to recover.

Who is paying for this?

I do not know who is paying… this is just some speculations. Jahi and her mom are poster perfect plaintiffs for a SCOTUS appeal. I’m sure someone with deep pockets and a specific agenda (and who would want their case to go that far to establish a firm legal precedent) could be financing the care and lawsuits.

I looked at some pictures of Jahi online and she appears to be in good condition physically. There does not appear to be much deterioration. This may be part of the problem in having the mother accept the reality of her situation.
