New Mexico attractions

I heard there were new ID licenses coming out in some states. Found a yellow/gold star on my seven year old one. Who knew. Don’t recall all the ID we showed back when we moved. Do know we have much better driving habits than are the norm in Florida! Good to know I can use my driver’s license when I fly if I don’t take my passport. Will have to check OOS friends and relatives’ licenses when they visit (or we travel).

Eons ago WI driver’s licenses had no picture. In fact my medical license and driver’s license were hard to tell apart at first glance then (it’s been nearly 40 years, so, eons).

My first wisconsin driver’s license was a piece of card stock paper, easily changed with a Selectric II typewriter if you had a need to adjust the birth date. I also used licenses of males to get into a bar as the bouncers never checked the name or the sex, just the date.

“Getting carded” at those places- literally. No lamination. btw- in recent years WI stopped the card medical licenses- You print your copies from your computer.

Back to NM. Enjoy.

It might or might not fit with your dates, but you can visit the Trinity Site on just two days each year: the first Saturdays in April and October.

Wow, I haven’t heard about people confusing Mexico and New Mexico.
I have a classmate who used to work at Los Alamos; unfortunately (for me), he moved and now makes big bucks in the industry.

As @wis75 observed, my comment about bringing your passport was made in jest, as a reference to the number of Americans ignorant of the existence of a US state with Mexico in its name.

Ever wonder why the default (and some special) New Mexico license plates say “New Mexico USA” on them?

Does the name “New England” confuse these people too? How about “New York?”

Many people cannot place New Mexico on a map. Maybe not New York either.

However, to be a little bit fair to New Mexico not being recognized as a state…for years New Mexico refused to comply with federal law on IDs. The government wasn’t going to accept their IDs for air travel or admission to government buildings and facilities as it openly granted IDs to anyone without documentation.

@yucca

Happens. All. The.Time.

New Mexico Magazine runs a monthly column called “One of Our Fifty Is Missing” where people write in with their stories about being told they aren’t part of the US

I’ve been told on more than one occasion that I can’t rent a car because I need a “US driver’s license” to do so.

Most recently there were national headlines when a NM man was asked to show his “New Mexican passport” when he tried to get a marriage license in Washington DC

@twoinanddone There just as much if not more confusion about whether NM was part of the US back in the 80s when I first moved here–more than 25 year before the Real ID Act was passed. It’s not a recent phenomenon.

Thank you everybody, I just came back and it was fabulous. I covered a lot of ground but didn’t get to the western part of the state, maybe next time. Visited Capulin volcano, Carlsbad caverns, Guadalupe mountains, Organ Mountains, White Sands dunes. Special thanks to @greenwitch and @1214mom for Ghost Ranch recommendation - fabulous hike, and a great lunch at the Abiquiu Inn.

@yucca10 - so glad you enjoyed it. We’ve talked about retiring to Santa Fe, but housing close in there is NOT cheap, and it’s far from our family. Another very cool thing to do in NM is the Balloon Festival, in early October. We liked it so much we got up before 4 am twice to go in the early morning.

I have to say I don’t understand how Georgia O’Keefe enjoyed summers there without AC.
