New New Kindle?

New Kindle question, this time about a cover/case. We have decided to get the kids Kindles for Hannukah and want to provide them both with covers from the start. I don’t know what their preference in style will be; will they want a book style cover, a flip cover, or just a case for storage/carrying while reading the book naked.

Target has a Speck Dust Jacket on sale this week which is a book style cover, but it also has a stand for hands free reading. I went ahead a bought two to have on hand; I can always return if they don’t like them. My daughter will most likely carry her Kindle in her purse each day as she takes public transportation to work and back. My son will more than likely use his mostly for the gym, although he might take it to the hospital for work.

Because I want to be able to return the covers if they prefer something different, I would like to buy from Amazon, Target, Best Buy or other retailers that returns are a pain. Any suggestions?

I’m looking at this one for my son. He reads in bed and this has an attached light. It may add more bulk but he probably won’t be carrying it many places.

I looked at that one without the light for the kids. I like that it comes it colors; my daughter would like a color, my son will prefer black!

Which is better for reading in the dark?

Kindle with a light - is it bright enough without being disturbing to others?
Color Nook or iPad - does a backlit display cause excessive eyestrain and is it too bright for others?

I like to read when I am in bed, but my DW complains that my current book light is too bright.

If your DW complains that your book light is too bright chances are the ipad may be as well, however you can adjust the brightness. I will say the eyestrain from reading consistently at night is lousy. The digital ink is far superior. I’ve never actually seen a Nook so I can’t speak to that format.

I generally have the ipad or mac with me in bed reading so DH is used to the light and occasional sound. He grumbles and I tell him he’s snoring, go back to sleep. I don’t think this tactic would be very successful with your DW. ;)

snowball, I like the feel/slimness of the “naked” Kindle, so I opted for only a case. I bought one from Amazon, which I like very much (see link). It protects the Kindle, but is still thin enough that I can put it in my purse (although I admit I have a fairly good-sized purse). The only downside is that the flap closure is velcro, so it’s hard to open quietly. I may have annoyed my spouse once or twice when he was sound asleep and I decided to take my Kindle out of its case.

[Amazon.com: Timbuk2 Nylon Kindle Sleeve (Fits 6" Display, 2nd Generation Kindle) Black/GunMetal/Lime-Aide: Electronics](http://www.amazon.com/Timbuk2-Display-Generation-GunMetal-Lime-Aide/dp/B002SB8ROK/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1288982895&sr=8-16)

I love Timbuk2 products! My daughter carries a very large purse most of the time and also has a tote for her shoes since she has a good walk to the bus or metro; hard to make that walk in heels!

What I don’t like about the dust jacket is the three sides are exposed and I could see keys or other purse items sliding in between the cover and the Kindle, possible scratching the screen. I guess a screen protector would solve that if needed.

It is hard as I don’t know what kind of product each child would want, and if I ask too many questions they will know I am getting them Kindles. While we talked about Kindles in general a while ago, I don’t think they are expecting them.

I love this Belkin case from Amazon:

It has just enough padding to protect my Kindle when I throw it into my purse and it has a zipper closure that prevents junk in my purse from hurting the screen.
I also use a ‘skin’ while reading…thin and light but a good grip. Love it.
