New Phone Scam

Wow–sounds like in post #18 they hit the jackpot! Over $40K! I guess we’re all in the wrong line of work/volunteering!

Just terrible.

My friend’s credit card got hacked, all 5-6 purchases were around 5-6 dollars at amazon and chewys. She alerted the bank, closed the card, and the bank asked her whether she wanted to call police. She didn’t since they were so small in values. Wonder whether she caught it early before larger purchase could be made.

A real time caller tried to scam our family two weeks ago. The perp called Lake Jr.'s grandma, pretending to be her beloved grandkid. Perp insisted that he was under arrest and need large sum of cash to avoid jail. Of course grandma was alarmed but when she asked “grandkid” why does your voice sound different, perp abruptly hung up.

Yesterday my landline got a call saying that I “had signed up for a service plan with Microsoft. Since the company was closing down I was eligible for a refund…”
I’m sure, all I would have had to do is to simply provide my banking information so they could deposit the funds. :expressionless:
Imagine! I had no idea Microsoft was closing!

I fell for a QuickBooks Pro support scam. I thought it was QB support, but it wasn’t! Months later, when it was time to renew QuickBooks, I discovered the employer ID number had been changed to someone else! I contacted CapitalOne and they gave me a credit on my card. Embarrassing!

When my credit cards got stolen I had to provide police reports in order for the CC companies to remove the charges.

I’ve never had to provide police reports. I had few first class tickets charged to my CC (from China) and very large/expensive sweatsuits and sneakers from Bloomie. My CC jus credited my account.

Seems that much credit card fraud (whether caught by the card company at the time of transaction or noticed as a fraudulent item by the cardholder on the bill) involves stolen credit card numbers (possibly used to make cloned cards), rather than theft of the physical credit card. A police report would only be applicable to the latter.

Lol, I’m going to try that! @lookingforward

I get a ton of auto warranty calls…it seems common among 20-somethings in the NY area.

My mom’s had a few Nigerian scammers message her on social media. Luckily she watches enough Dr. Phil to spot one.

I received at least 7 calls today (all to voicemail) from “Apple” about my icloud account being compromised, with a callback number. I don’t have any Apple products or an icloud account. I blocked the number. Just mentioning this in case anybody here also gets the call.

I have been getting tons of Apple emails about resetting something or compromise. I called them and they will never ask for this. There is a email to send them this stuff.

I’m being bombarded by calls about paying off our student loans. No one in our household has loans but I “MUST call back immediately or we’ll be sent to collections.” I block the number and then they just call back from another one. Sooooo irritating!

I have ATT and I have been getting notifications from ATT about when a call is a spam, so I don’t pick up. I have been getting less overseas phone calls.

I have ATT too and they have been getting better at giving me a “spam risk” alert but the student loan people aren’t triggering it yet.

Hey, I take whatever help I can get. I used to get calls very early in the morning.

Evidently my frequent caller on my office phone would like to help me finish my application for a $250,000 loan for my business. She calls many times a week let me know I have qualified. Guess she doesn’t listen to my voice mail where it says I have retired.

This isn’t a phone scam, but my debit card, which only H uses, was hacked recently. I check my online bank account every day and when I saw that H had incurred a charge to a particular store, I asked what he had purchased. He said he hadn’t been there. The next charge was for Subway, where we don’t eat. I had the card cancelled. H went to the store involved and asked for a copy of the receipt. When we looked at it, we saw that the perp had actually used his own rewards card, so we had his info to give to the cops.

I am always getting calls to renew my car warranty - my newest car is a 2006! or update my computer… I hang up on them all.

I received a call from a 312 (Chicago?) area code, which I didn’t pick up. They left a voicemail message asking me to call back; it’s allegedly a message from the Centers for Disease Control doing a study on childhood vaccines and asking whether I have children up to 4 years old in my household. Is this legit??

@VeryHappy -
I got a similar call and I took it. I answered the survey because the caller seemed legitimate in that it was a young man, not a robot asking me to hold on, etc. I was asked if I had children of a certain age in my home and when I said no, the young man thanked me, said I didn’t qualify and hung up.
