New toilets, brand recommendations? Functionality?

THIS! Totally forgot, which is the point. Your kids will forget that not all toilets are soft close. They go to my MILs and you hear a toilet slam shut…you know it’s one of mine. :o

Just wanted to echo the toto, elongated and soft close seat and we did buy the special seat with the bidet-type feature for the master bath. Expensive but it is nice! We looked around online and found quite a reasonable deal, particularly since shipping was free and there was no tax.

Post #3: “Truly a pain to get seated on that wax ring, or so I remember.”

I don’t think you are using it correctly.

Toto may be pricey for a rental, but if you want a truly functional, no-plunging, installed-once and forget-about-it, Toto is the way to go. Just buy the cheapest model, all white and you can’t go wrong. My husband first though it’s ridiculous to pay extra for the soft close seat, but once he tried it - being the only male in the house - he’s sold on the concept and replaced all other toilet seats in the house.
Blueiguana - in my case, it’s my H who slams the seat hard in people’s house!

I don’t think the Toto I bought was all that expensive but it was one of their most popular models in the most popular color (white). It wasn’t that much more than the Kohler I bought.

That said, I also don’t think it performs any better than the Kohler. They’re both excellent and handle almost anything you can throw it it flushing-wise. Since they both work great I can’t say one works better than the other.

Whether you go with Toto, Kohler, or some other brands, they can get expensive very quickly as one gets them in less popular colors, different styles, and other configurations that add nothing to the flushing functionality - the cost goes up dramatically for less popular features.

On the wax ring - it’s very easy to install it - stick it to the bottom of the toilet rather than the floor then set the toilet in place (carefully) over the bolts.

Stopped at the local plumbing store today to get the opinionated owners’ take on the toilets he sells. His recommendation for good price/function is the Kohler Wellworth. Low flow, functional, about the same price as the American Standard Cadet III. Side by side, this one has better porcelain quality as well.

The Totos’ are state of the art, best ever, but as there are other components to this unexpected remodel, will perhaps think about that for my house later, where I have a bathroom remodel to do after I strip some wallpaper. (ugh) One Toto with dual flush even had a different mounting system for the ring, some sort of plate that covers the ring, and then the toilet itself just drops down on top.

Our town may still have a rebate-will check, as that may make the Toto in ballpark.

Regarding post #3. I only did this once, decades ago. Interesting about wax on toilet first.
