DH would be aghast if I didn’t make black eyed peas. It’s supposedly bad luck not to serve them on NYD. ![]()

I’m cooking them as Hoppin’ John today.
We are at an Airbnb in the White Mountains of NH. Made a French dinner of duck confit, pan fried potatoes in duck fat, and haricot verts with shiitakes and shallots. Dessert was cherry clafoutis. It was not one of the more fully equipped kitchens, so we had to eat off of heavy plastic plates and drink our wine out of plastic cups
but we all enjoyed! Hopefully our big hike today will work some of it off.
@MaineLonghorn, did you go to Westlake High School? I just saw their marching band at the Rose Bowl Parade!
My husband spent the early part of the day in a rush to contribute to our chosen charities. Even though we contribute throughout the year, my husband always does a last minute rush sometime between 12/29 and 12/31. For some reason, he never feels the need during Giving Tuesday when we get all the solicitations, but then there is mad rush at the last minute.
We give heavily to programs that support kids that are aging out of the foster care system and to humanitarian aid organizations as well as Planned Parenthood, our local food pantry, and homeless shelters/support agencies. Then we usually have a few “new to us” that we feel called to contribute to each year. This year it was the hospital that took care of my family when they were released from Gaza and the individual fund that will eventually help them rebuild their lives.
Yes! My sister texted me that they were on but I’m away from the house. I read that they let some alumni march, too.
I had oatmeal for dinner and watched Netflix, went to sleep at 11. Do I qualify as the lamest?! ![]()
The fireworks at the Needle were very disappointing! The drone show was great, but the commentators should have shut up and stopped yapping nonsense. Music was OK (but couldn’t see much due to smoke from the fireworks obscuring the Needle).
Celebrated with the same folks we have celebrated with since 1991. Last night was…shrimp bisque, beef Wellington, fingerling potatoes, lemon sorbet, mixed greens with pears walnuts Parmesan and a light vinegar dressing, baileys parfaits for dessert.
Brunch today (we spend the night), homemade corned beef hash, poached egg, over toast with some kind of delicious cheese sauce made with gueyere cheese. Vanilla yogurt with fruit!
Yankee gift swap…theme this year was bottles of wine $20. It was great!
We had a blow-out dinner in NYC on 12/30 so decided to spend a quiet NYE at home. Ordered in from a favorite Italian restaurant, shared a bottle of champagne, watched the ball drop, and went to sleep.
It seemed like a nice NYE but now I’m a bit jealous reading about some of the wonderful food and gatherings on this thread.
We pushed the rib eyes on the grill to today since at least it’s dry! I’ll sauté some mushrooms and make a salad… maybe a few air fryer potato wedges?
I figure the food thread people are on the food threads.
I forgot to say that my tenderloin turned out perfectly on Christmas.
I dried the meat by thawing and putting in the fridge over night unwrapped. Seasoned, cooked at 475 for 1/2 hour. Wrapped the meat in foil and put in my cooler for 2 hours. Meat was perfectly medium. Tasted great that day and the next when I warmed it slightly.
I wondered! That can be a holiday stand by now when traveling!
Wondering if this would work with pork tenderloin? Sorry to take this off topic!
Food people are definitely here!
Thanks for sharing! This might come very handy when taking meals to kids’ places.
It worked great to free up oven space to cook sides. And would be great to transport.
I did let the beef come to room temp before putting in the oven.
I think it would work with pork tenderloin.
Lame-ish NYE for us, intentionally. We passed on a dinner party invite as we don’t like being on the roads on NYE, and the party was 25 mins away.
We instead had our typical NYE meal of surf (lobster) and turf (filet), baked potato and roasted asparagus. Dh never stays up late but I’m a night owl. Finished one last book for 2023, then took my dog for a late walk along the water so I could see some fireworks that someone was setting off across the water from us.
Spent today reading and putting away indoor Christmas decor tho our tree and outdoor lights will stay up until Epiphany. Dinner is football snacking fare while watching college football - wings, pigs in a blanket, etc. Dessert is pumpkin cheesecake a neighbor gave us for the holidays.
This is what we eat every New Year’s Day. Ham, collard greens, black-eyed peas, and cornbread. It’s what every Southern person I know eats on New Year’s Day. Though, the types of pork and greens sometime vary.
I have a friend who counts out 365 black-eyed peas to eat on NYD. Good luck for each day of the year. Guessing she ate 366 this year!
We did collards, Hoppin’ John for our black eyed peas, and yellow grits for our corn. And some biscuits. One of us is vegan and 2 are 95% vegetarian but I did make shiitake bacon. Thought the collards and Hoppin’ John came out good. We like to sauté the collards rather than boil em. I did not take any photos.
I am going to have to google Hoppin John as I don’t even know what that is.

This sounds perfect day and evening to me!!!
