My ONE experience was 1984 (I think…). I knew I wouldn’t be able to find a bathroom so I didn’t drink anything, just watched the BF at the time and all his friends get crazy (remember for men the whole world is their toilet), I definitely would not recommend it…

It is dangerously cold in NY right now. I am from Chicago and NYers dont know how to handle subzero wind chills. It’s dangerous especially since you cant drink in the Time Square zone. Aside from the current weather NY is better than Chicago 's navy pier. Me and DD went many years ago, gangs turned over a cop car on the pier, drunks puked, and too many gunshots going off. But the penny bus ride was great.

I have never heard from anyone who went to Times Square on New Years who actually enjoyed it or wanted to go back. One of my friends had a gold chain yanked from her neck years ago. Freezing cold, crowds, no bathroom… I don’t think you could pay me enough to go!

Several events are once in a life, just do it, and over and done:

NYC New Year’s eve Times Square 1975 - Not bad weather that night but people just couldn’t wait to get on subway/lots of pushing immediately after the ball dropped. See previous posters ^^ abount the drunks;

Macy’s parade - 73 or 74 - one and done, just a ton of people;

Inaugural balls and parades - The ball tickets were about $200 per 20something years ago and now are about 10 times more expensive. I’ll be watching all 2 million of you from the comfort of my couch January 20, but do have fun in DC…

Short report from nephew -
they made it in there in the early afternoon. Froze, but met people from all over the country and world (yet none from NY!). Said they were glad they did it, but once was definitely enough.

Just wanted to let everyone know that everything went well, and I will post an update later. Thank you to everyone who responded!

S1 went to NY with friends (none of whom had ever been there before) planning to do the Times Square thing. I was really worried about them. He called yesterday morning and reported that they had a great New Year’s Eve just going from bar to bar in the area and soaking up the atmosphere. They didn’t try to get in far enough to see the ball drop.
They have been there for five days and have enjoyed the city immensely seeing all the sights with the expert guidance of his roommates grandfather who lives there. They are traveling home today. We are looking forward to hearing about all their adventures in the city.

I’ve been to NYC for New Year’s twice- once among the crowd trying to see the ball drop and the other primarily attending very expensive parties that catered to a majority of the upper east side set. Both had their pros and cons but the cold weather was a real downer for me. I’m from Texas and just not use to it. :)

My favorite New Year’s Eve celebrations have been in the warmer climates such as Miami, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, which is where we shacked up for this year’s celebration.

For those that went this year, I hope all report back safe and sound. Happy New Year.

I had two sets of friends who decided to go to Times Square this year. The first got there early, froze, and decided it wasn’t worth it and left. The second got there after 11 pm, stood at 7th Ave. and Central Park, saw the ball drop even from that distance, turned the other way and watched the fireworks. They said it was great. I never thought I’d want to do it, but their experience sounded OK. (Although I still think I’ll never do it.)

My oldest son went with he then-girlfriend’s family to NYC several years ago over New Years. He went with an engagement ring and over the course of the visit he asked permission of his future-father-in-law (privately since this was a surprise for his future-wife) and then, on New Years’ Eve, he proposed. They did NOT go to Times Square, but to a very nice restaurant on 8th Ave (where they could only afford soup and desert, I think!). They were seated by a window and drew a crowd as he presented the ring and asked the question!

Now they are expecting their first child…so NYC at New Years’ can be a wonderful thing!

S1 and friends finally made it home last night after 10 hours on the road. He had a great time. He excitedly told us of all the places /landmarks he had seen. The funniest (and most touching to me as a Mom) was that one of “cool things we did” (and these are all college seniors) was go to all the places in the “Home Alone” movie…Central Park, Plaza Hotel and FAO Schwartz… We prob. watched “Home Alone” 100 times when they were kids. Some things you never forget. I guess “Home Alone” will be one of the movies that always brings back childhood for this college generation.
