New Year's Resolutions?

Carolina - the diet/exercise thread is very supportive of everyone, whether your goal is to run a marathon or be able to work up to walking the dog for a mile. Don’t be intimidated!

Bunsen, we have almost all friends to not buying gifts now. It’s a big relief, in more ways than one. We go out to eat or do other experiences together instead.

Well, I think I will sound pretty self centered but I have declared 2016 the year of ME.

I am going to set up a glass fusion room (which means putting my exercise room in G’sons room) . ( this room is used 20 nights a year and I exercise about 200 days a year) ( but will not be cute anymore).

I am planning a trip to Scandinavia instead of India (H).

I am most likely going to buy myself a new car (needed).

I am seeing a surgeon about a liposuction and a neck thingy.

I am going to buy new clothes.

And it is going to be my turn. Politely!

Please check out the diet and exercise thread. I have started posting there and find everyone very kind and supportive.
I am just starting to run and am only up to 4 minutes at a time on the treadmill, but everyone starts from somewhere. My goal is a 5K, not a marathon. Please join us.

I’m a teacher, married to a teacher, with 3 kids who are all students.

So January 1st isn’t the start of a new year in my house. It’s simply the signal that Christmas Vacation is nearing an end.

Nope, the time for resolutions in my house is Labor Day. It’s when the rhythm of our house changes, when we all have a fresh start and a clean slate.

January 1st is the start of the snowy season in NY-- we tend to get the bulk of our snow and really cold weather between New Years and St. Patrick’s Day in March. So it’s time for hunkering down inside, not starting an exercise regime. It’s time to crave carbs. I can survive on salads all summer long, but they have absolutely no appeal to me when it’s cold out. (OK, disclaimer: we had the warmest Christmas on record. But I have no faith that those temps near 70 will continue for the next 8-10 weeks.)

So will I try to be a better person, to eat more healthy foods, to keep on top of the laundry and the shopping and to keep the charges down, to be a better mom and wife and teacher? Sure. I’m trying those things all the time, with varying degrees of success from one day to the next.

But no grand New Years resolutions here.

I am giving up that expensive, high calorie beverage I pick up on the way to the office. For each month that I am “perfect” I plan to reward myself with something only I want (clothing, movie, gadget, etc).

DS and I gave up going to Starbucks for four or five months. He got an iPad mini as a reward. Me? I got a little more time in the morning and a little less stress

count me in, annual physical is end of March

This is great creative thinking!!! ^^^

@rockvillemom, I think that the mini makeover is a great idea - sometimes, starting to look better makes you FEEL better - and can be incentive for physical improvements in other areas - CC’ers are great at giving virtual fashion advice - let us help you!!!

Re: Diet/Exercise posts/threads/etc. - not participating in the mega-“scary” thread is a choice. But I will also say this - there has also been a “Weight Loss For Dummies” thread (hey, I didn’t name it!!!) - however, that thread often gets lost and buried - because people are not dedicated to the purpose of it - participating, supporting, asking for help - at the level needed to KEEP PROGRESS GOING. THAT is what it will take to make changes. No excuses, just honesty.

So I’m just saying this - no matter what the resolution is - weight/fitness related or not…be honest with yourself. Food is TOTALLY a choice. Exercise - mostly a choice (unless you have an injury) - there is an exercise for you and it will only be successful if you keep at it. Doesn’t have to be hardcore. Think MOVEMENT. Steps are an excellent place to start.

Any habit/resolution you are trying to kick or start - mostly up to you to succeed or fail.

Given that I am almost a full 10 pounds heavier than I was this time last year, I am another one who needs to make this the year of ME! I’ve really been struggling with my wieght this year and apparently it has won the battle! Not for long though. I’ve started a new class at our gym and decided that it is time to make time for myself. Once my daughter returns to school from break, no excuses…although even while she is home I am going to the class and continuing with my usual walking. I also need to up my game in the wardrobe department as I have been choosing comfort over style much too often. I’m sure there is a stylishly comfortable combo I can find and I intend to make the time. Honestly, I am disgusted with myself and I intend to do something about it.

@tired already - I’m glad to hear I’m not alone in choosing comfort over style. But I find I feel much better when
I like what I am wearing. I am banishing the stretch pants. Hideous. I am fortunate that I can wear nice jeans to work. I am going to focus on new jeans and cute shoes/booties and step away from old lady fashion.

@abasket - food is totally a choice. But I truly feel addicted to sugar, carbs and high fat foods. I looked at the Whole30 website that someone mentioned upthread. Rather intense, but maybe that’s what I need to do.

My doctor gave me a prescription for Belviq, which I tried and hated. Supposed to curb appetite, but
i had weird side effects and discontinued after a few days.

Never. Then I can’t be disappointed in myself.

You all should make a resolution to post regularly on the Diet and Exercise thread. The camaraderie of that thread is what made me lose 25 pounds and keep it off for 5 years!>>>>>>>>>>>>>

That’s wonderful! Good for you!

My resolution is different.

When my parents were alive, they made The List – a list of all of their valuable items and who would get them, my sister or me. Consequently, when my parents passed away, she and I had no arguments or hard feelings. My sister and I have swapped some things through the years and we’ve also given each other some things that we knew the other one wanted badly. What my parents did was a wonderful, wonderful thing.

In 2016, I’m going to make a list so my sons don’t have to fight, argue or make any decisions.

That’s a wonderful resolution!
