ucla dance marathon!!haha

Hi everyone!
My name is Michelle and I’m a Fall 2010 transfer…Economics major. I guess I got started on this thread late lol. Anyway, it’s kind of comforting to see all the other UC transfers! Most of the people that I know at my CCC are going to be applying to CSUs.
I’m hoping to get into Cal. :)

welcome :)

i know i wish more of my friends would buck up and apply to UCs! goodluck to you !

Hi Michelle :D

Yeah, why not shoot for a killer school, right?

Yeah, true. I don’t know anyone in my close group of friends in the scholars/TAP program. The ones who do want to go to the UCs say they do, but their GPAs are fairly low, but I don’t want to discourage them.

It’s weird coming from a private school where everyone is competing and go to Brown/Cal/UCLA/Stanford/Johns Hopkins etc to a CC where a last minute paper gets you an A, resulting all your friends calling you a nerd.

Just an observation from my experiences haha. But its like the public high school I never got to go to :D

I was kind of bummed initially to be going to a CCC, but you know what, if you’re truly dedicated and want to go somewhere great, it’s an amazing opportunity (plus, a lot cheaper). I also think it’s great because if you’re dedicated, you stand out in your classes. I always try to make a good impression on the first day of class (I’m the always-punctual guy who sits in the front) :P

^ I sit in the front because I can’t see >____<

But yeah. It’s the perfect example of the “big fish in a little pond” analogy.
I’m a shark! chomp chomp

I was initially bummed, too and now that it’s coming to an end, I can say that my time at ccc did pretty much live up to my bumness expectation. It doesn’t really take that much dedication to stand out in your classes at ccc’s. Honestly, I would rate my effort the past few years maybe a 6 at best and I was still tops in the majority of my classes; it really doesn’t take that much time and commitment to receive A’s in most classes (with the exceptions of chemistry, physics and maybe some math courses, but all are still quite manageable). The lack of competition is killer; the level of intelligence and expectations of others can be a bit eye-opening to some. I’d rather be struggling with hard workers to maintain a high GPA than being the shark in the pond by default anytime. Anyways, more than anything else, there is no sense of community within the ccc environment at all as oppose to real colleges, which is the biggest bummer for me. Don’t get me wrong, my social life outside of it is cool and all, but I just really wanted that whole “college experience.” Fortunately, you’re right about the huge amount of mula you’ll be saving, but I really advise you to take this time to go out and do something big in the world or put yourself out there and experience a lot of new different things while at the ccc because Lord only knows how much time you’ll have on your hands.

Preach! (10 char)

To continue my ocean analogy…

Yeah, it’s cool being a shark because you easily eat all the little helpless fishies who didn’t develop good study skills or just don’t care whatsoever about survival in the small little CC pond.

BUT, it’s much more fun/intellectually stimulating being a dolphin in a competitive and highly social environment and explore the giant (U) sea and all it’s possibilities.

Hahaha, okay I’m done with this metaphor.

@ Erika. I like the way you think- you must be studying anthropology or something amazing :D

@TransferDad- you should give those books to the fishies that Erika the shark gobbled up.

I guess this makes me the Kraken. :]

the Kraken? What does that meeeeean?

Damnit. Not a Pirates of the Caribbean fan?

Not since I was a wee lad :P

Kraken = giant squid monster thing. HAHAHA (I google’d it)

You deserve to be it, Mr. 4.0 GPA.

Martin- 4.0?

Right on! What’s your major again? (I’m positive it’s in this massive thread like 6 times, but it’s easier to just ask here)

I do remember that you’re applying to around 50 schools, right? :P

Dam this thread got to 38pages already. I predicted 250pages by November.

Evan,

Haha yeah, 4.0. It’s gonna be tough getting into UCLA though, as I am a Comm Studies major. As long as I get into a non backup school that I apply to (UCB, UCLA, UNC, NYU, USC, Missouri, Syracuse, and Stanford) , I think I’ll be happy. It’s ALOT better than where I would have ended up after high school–San Francisco State or CSUN. It truly shows what can happen if you work hard! I’m excited for all of us!
