Vanderbilt has been prestigious in the south for nearly a century. Literary movements such as the Fugitives (and later the Agrarians) in the 1920s made Vanderbilt a fountainhead of New Criticism – the dominant mode of textual analysis. Throughout Vanderbilt’s history they have hosted the nation’s most powerful speakers (John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., etc.) – a tradition which continues today through IMPACT Symposium.

Conversely, Emory has only been considered prestigious by many since the 1980s (after the Woodruff donation). Emory also owes part of its existence directly to Vanderbilt. When Vanderbilt cut its ties with the Methodist Church, the Emory president persuaded them to build a new Methodist school in Atlanta. Saying that Emory is the more “historic” school is completely ridiculous and factually inaccurate.

As for rankings, Vanderbilt ranks higher in EVERY single ranking aside from US News (which they are tied in). Revealed Preference, UK Times, Economist, Newsweek Magazine among others rate Vandy higher.

Also – to the poster “SUNY” I am from New York and Vanderbilt stills wins most cross-admit battles here. The only towns where it is close are towns with heavy Jewish populations (Great Neck, Roslyn, etc.) and even this is beginning to change. Vanderbilt wins in a landslide in the WASPy towns (Cold Spring Harbor, Locust Valley, etc). As for New York City – take a look at matriculation numbers from elite high schools. Collegiate, which is arguably the most prestigious school in NYC, has enrolled 12 students to Vanderbilt while only 2 to Emory. Nearly every elite prep school in the Northeast favors Vanderbilt–Phillips Andover, Groton, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, St. Paul’s, etc.
