Nice maroon book

Haha nice observation :P

But seriously, if they spend like $20 per EA admit, that’s enough for four to six University scholarships. If they cut their EA student spending in half (and just sent scarves and maybe one other thing, giving us online access to the course catalog rather than a bulky paper copy), I highly doubt it would impact the general yield, but they could give a few small scholarships that would allow some people (like me) to actually attend.

Assume they spend $30 per student, which I think is more than reasonable. (Aims of Education + course catalog + pretty picture book + scarf + calendar + postcards probably comes out to more than $30, considering all that postage, but I’ll be nice.)

30 * 1676 EA admits = 50280. Five $10,000 scholarships, or ten $5,000 ones. Personally I would much rather they give the money away, even if it isn’t to me. Although the pictures are very pretty :>

You guys got a scarf?! Man I am so jealous. Sucks to be deferred, then waitlisted… D: And I can’t find this maroon book anywhere on the website. What’s in it?!

while I am enjoying huskies beat up lobos

Book contains nice pictures of

[] Rockefellar Memorial Chapel
[] Harper Memorial Library
[] Some looted Egyptian artifact.
[] View of some laguna. (ho-hum I see Elliot Bay and Lake Union often.)
[] Some chick ready to throw in the soccer ball.
[] Swimming pool. (I have to admit that this one looks nice)
[] Drunk party girls. (ok, I am just joking)
[] Some dude busy taking a photo instead of enjoying the moment, some girl screaming her lungs out while an older lady is wondering what she has in a little pouch.
[] Crowded caffetaria with hungry students wondering if they will get something to eat before they have to head back to classes.
[] Picture of the new dorm.
[] Picture of once-a-year bikers.
[] Our beloved president honoring someone.

Man! That is way too cool. I already know that if Chicago admits me I probs won’t afford it because their FA sucks, but it sucks to see a dream wither away. Congrats to all you accepted kids! I hope you guys have a splendid experience there!

Do you know if UChicago is sending out the maroon book to RD admits? I just got my acceptance but I’m having trouble getting a mental image of what the school looks like via Google images.

^ I believe this new book will be sent to a lot of ppl: RD admits, prospective students, etc because the letter that comes with it literally states: “As an admitted student, you are among the first to be receiving the maroon book enclosed”. I haven’t been to visit yet either but the first few pages especially of the book are awesome. Very Hogwarts.

I must sound so materialistic but- do RD admitted students get the scarf too?

^ Scarf was ok but I loved the card.

My son and I are beginning to feel like there is too much stuff being sent. At first we felt wanted, now it seems a little desperate. I think the best thing they sent was the holiday card with the handwritten note referring to one of the application essays.

I agree with you mathmom. I am going to keep that card even if I don’t go to UChicago.

My card was a bit meh. It referred to my college classes. And my name was spelled wrong. It would have been nice to have them refer to my essays, but I guess that that wasn’t what got me in… resolutely, the scarf was pretty nice (mass produced look, but it says chicago!!!) Why not make your own scarf–http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0512/issue/UofCScarf.pdf</a></p>

I’m working on finding good colors for the yarn.

I don’t mind the books, but when the Career Planning Services keeps sending me letters, it gets a little annoying. The scarf and card were super, and I’m using the calendar!

Do RD admits get a scarf? I want a scarf!

nope. sorry. You can make your own, though–http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0512/issue/UofCScarf.pdf</a> (not the same as the one they sent)

@alfassa: seconded. I wanted one so bad when I first heard all the EA admits got one! (I saw that knitting pattern before, but I don’t know how to knit :()

Well, if EA admits got scarves, I think we RD admits should get something too… Maybe not a scarf, but something. Like a scholarship… or a t-shirt. :)

Does Chicago have a reputation for giving worse financial aid than most peer schools? I’m asking because I was actually satisfied with the aid they gave me, so does that mean I’ll probably get even more from peer schools? Also, I think it benefits them more to send out these small gifts to EA admits because it makes them feel special and wanted. That subliminal message that the school really cares about them would sway at least more than the 10 students or so that the extra University Scholarships would.

I was completely overjoyed with my aid package. All told my family and I will only need to contribute around $4,000 a year.
