Night guard for teeth grinding?

I bought two from Target and both worked very well. I would certainly go that route before going for an expensive one. My dentist actually recommended I try that first. I used to wake up with an aching jaw and sometimes headaches.

My dentist says he makes one that is just for the front teeth and that for most people that stops them from grinding the back teeth and is more comfortable. Haven’t tried it yet though.

Our son’s was covered by insurance and was made by our dentist. They take a mold and send it out to a lab to be made.

My dentist just charged us $100 for the guard, and he had us keep the mold so that more can be made…

Wow, anxiousmom! That’s the best deal, yet. It sounds like there is quite a price range on the custom guards.

My son still insists that he never has any jaw pain, sore facial muscles, headaches, etc. Anyone one else asymptomatic, except for worn-down teeth?

I had a custom nightguard 10+ years ago that was partially covered by insurance. It helped with constant headaches and jaw pain from the clenching. I then got InvisAlign to correct my cross bite & crooked teeth and wore the last set as a retainer until last I found a crack in the lower. Have an appointment with the orthodontist this week to get new retainers made.

jgotteach: I had no symptoms besides the worn teeth. They got to the point that I had tooth sensitivity because I’d worn the holes in the enamel, but otherwise no symptoms. No sore jaw, no headaches, nothing. I only had those kinds of symptoms when I wore the stupid bite splint. XD

I, too, had no pain. Just suffered from worn teeth and cracked fillings.

My D was diagnosed with TMJ and also with “clenching” her teeth at night. SHe wears a daytime appliance to get her jaw aligned corrrectly and a night time guard to stop her from clenching. The night time one cost $650 partially covered by the dentist and she’ll have to have it for the rest of her life. The daytime one was over $2100 and hopefully she’ll only have to wear it for 6 months. (ouch, but if it fixes her jaw issues, then that works for us).

Serious TMJ here. Wore a day one for a month to ease the problem enough that I could eat - I went more than 6 months with no solid food because of the pain. Have worn a dentist made night-guard for 20+ years. I’m on the second (have had it for 12 years) because the dog chewed up my first one. I’m a clencher and have had enough root canals to prove it.

Mine is an upper and covers my front/middle 8 teeth, which keeps my back teeth from touching. I’m so used to it that it’s weird to sleep without it. I also wear it during the day when I’m feeling very stressed.

njmom, one of my kids had Invisalign. Not sure if the final retainer was any more substantial than the other trays, but she ground through that in about 8 months. Had no idea she was grinding her teeth up until then. They gave her a new retainer. Ground through that in 8 or 9 months. They ‘repaired’ it; ground through that. Finally they gave us one that’s holding up. The material is the hard pink plastic type that’s used on regular retainers after braces. Her new retainer doesn’t fit completely over the teeth like Invisalign does, but it has shallow impressions where her teeth fit in. It’s just enough to keep the teeth from shifting

If you’ve ground through your Invisalign retainer fairly quickly, don’t waste your money on getting the same thing, as you’ll just grind through the next one.
