NJ resident (Indian American) low GPA applying CS [92/100 GPA, 1300 SAT, <$30k]

I think NJIT COA has a higher miscellaneous expenses estimate.

Comparing from https://financialaid.tcnj.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/79/2023/06/COA-23_24-FINAL-JUNE-UG-IS-On-Campus.pdf and https://www.njit.edu/financialaid/sites/njit.edu.financialaid/files/UFTNA_2324_final.pdf for living on campus:

Cost TCNJ NJIT
Tuition $14,706 $15,616
Fees $3,980 $3,406
Housing on campus $10,148 $9,660
Meal plan $5,992 $4,440
Additional meals $900
Subtotal direct costs $34,826 $34,022
Books $1,200 $2,750
Personal or Misc $3,228 $3,380
Transportation $1,350 $1,200
Subtotal indirect costs $5,778 $7,330
Total $40,604 $41,352

They claim it’s because of their investment in upgrading facilities and hiring STEM instructional staff that have industry experience. I don’t know if that’s the real reason

Hiring of engineering and CS faculty may be more expensive because they have to complete with industry employers who are willing to hire those with PhDs in engineering and CS.

But NJIT list price is not much different from TCNJ list price.

Yes, I thought the number I found for TCNJ was the entire COA, but it was the the subtotal of direct costs. (It was a sub-page of the TCNJ website but it wasn’t clear that it was only the subtotal. It seemed plausible as the full COA!)

These are both very pricey for in-state!

do you think UMD would be good? I really like the campus and CS is really good there.

Do you think UMD would be good?

UMD is excellent for CS but is quite competitive for admission to a CS major.

It’s a great school, but it’ll be an admission reach for you even in EA, and now that that deadline has passed, it’ll be a very high reach in RD. Plus, it won’t be affordable - COA is twice your budget.
