<p>No restrictions at daughters school. Was very nice that a poster that I admired was there,his kid didn’t grad till the folllowing year. My kid got 1 of 3 major awards at graduation and he pm me and said he saw my kiddo get the big award. It may not seem a big deal to ?any of you but it was to me. You know who you are, thank you, it meant a lot for you to see my D get that and then tell me.</p>
<p>No reason to attend a graduation ceremony unless my kid is speaking. Biggest beating ever. I did not even walk at my own. If graduating is the biggest accomplishment they will achieve,I feel sad for them. </p>
<p>With all the awful shooting events on college campuses lately, why would anyone be surprised at tight security around the POTUS? As other have said above, getting into a NFL game is also restrictive. <p>And please, leave the political commentary out of this thread. Regardless of one’s political leaning, having the POTUS as one’s graduation speaker is pretty darned impressive.</p>
<p>Of course POTUS needs to be protected. But whoever that person is D or R needs to consider how the security measures will impact an event that is for the graduates, the parents and grandparents, not for a politician. </p>
<p>Whoever invited, lobbied, or begged him to speak should probably consider that, too. Gosh, about the last thing I would want to do on a hot summer day is sit in a baseball stadium listening to a politician say the same old tired thing for an hour before the real show starts. That would likely be true whatever party so I don’t really consider it political, btw.</p>
<p>Actually the fewer speakers the better. I’ve already been to one graduation this year and the roll-eyes and groans when a long-winded person got up to speak were visible around the auditorium. The graduates want their moment on the stage. The parents want the graduates moment on the stage. A processional, a recessional, a few brief comments, the handing out of diplomas…done. That’s the way it should be.</p>
<p>Traffic–AND air traffic–used to be tied up in Maine every time GHWB or GWB came to Kennebunkport. And the news people would run down there and do flattering stories. </p>

<p>Torveaux, for me, it’s not that graduating is the biggest thing my D will ever accomplish. But it is a milestone, and a moment to stop and celebrate all that’s been achieved so far. </p>
<p>These rules are not unusual, at all, regardless of who the speaker is. Seems like just another opportunity for people to complain.</p>
<p>I find it sad that anybody would be anything but excited to have the president speak at graduation.</p>
<p>Well, it’s no different than any other speaker, really. I guess the school sees it as a prize of sorts. Personally, I would prefer a successful grad of the school in question if you want someone relatable in some way to the kids experience. And, politicians are never going to have the whole crowd on their side so I don’t even know why they agree. Today’s topic was reportedly climate change.</p>

<p>I have to disagree that a president is no different than any other speaker. As a student or as a parent, I’d be thrilled. And I’d be willing to put up with the extra inconvenience, if any.</p>

<p>Count me among those who is very grateful to have a no name giving the address at the graduation ceremony. If I want to hear politicians, I’ll turn on CSPAN. Really, are anyone of them going to say anything unusual, terribly inspiring or novel? This is supposed to be about the graduates. D is not even going to the ‘big’ ceremony. She attended one in the past and said it amounted to the faculty patting themselves on the back, a blah blah blah speaker and then an appeal for alum donations. We will all be attending the small (200 ??) ceremony for her specific college. No restrictions on what can be brought or on how the grads can customize their attire.</p>
<p>Hmmm…come to think of it, I never hero worshiped any rock stars, TV idols or the like. </p>
<p>Hmmm… we went through the same airport-type screenings when we went to the Little League World Series in Williamsport a few years ago. H had to give up his pocket knife (didn’t want to walk all the way back to the car to return it) and I lost my bottle of sunscreen). Doesn’t surprise me. </p>
