@mathmom, agreed, there is lovely architecture to be found around LA.
For my H, moving anywhere is likely to meet stiff resistance from him. He MAY be willing to have us do some longer visits to wherever our kids settle, but time will tell. They are still in their 20s, so not yet SURE what they want.
Our current home is pretty good for aging in place. Sadly, the grocery store that was a short walk away was bought by and became a church. We do have a nearby gas station and convenience store as well as three restaurants and a fast food place. The middle school is two blocks from our home and a public tennis court is a 7 minute walk away.
Seaside did a lot to revive interest in traditional town planning and I admire it greatly for that. Still, they had very tight rules for a long time - “you can any kind of fence as long as it’s a picket fence, you can only have Airstream trailers”, etc., and those rules made it seem a bit too fake and precious to me. The Truman Show was filmed there which makes sense.
If you like Seaside, you should like Ocean Grove, NJ. It is the same scale and just adorable. The water is definitely colder!
What exactly is a raised foundation? My house is on pilings. Actually brick piers. Is that the same?

I have to agree with you-this neighborhood is similar, and I’ve found that I’ve been mostly delighted over the years by how social and connected it is. My introvert H, on the other hand, is somewhat aggravated by the constant social invitations. Too bad, lol!
@MotherOfDragons — I’m actually pretty introverted, and only attend an hour of so of most of the social stuff. DH stays until the bitter end (3 or more hours)–but just going at all means that I know my neighbors.
