Non-negotiables in Your College Search: Student Edition

I have another one:

If they use the word Hogwarts in the info session, I think I will cut them from the list.

Must be less than 10,000 students.

Athletics can’t be major.

Needs a good academic reputation.

Admit rate <50%.

Small. Definitely fewer than 10,000 students, preferably under 4000.

Not in the South. Not in the rural Midwest.

Good reputation, fairly selective.

Intellectual atmosphere

No core curriculum

A bit negotiable but probably I want:
-no Greek life
-season changes! i.e. the coldest winter you’ve got. Bring it on.

Curious and Engaged Students
Small Class Sizes
Professors who care about their students, and would rather teach than research
Flexible core curriculum (no core would be awesome!)

1) At least 10,000 students

2) A lot of school spirit that centers around good athletics

3) Not rural. Preferably a nice college town that’s not too far from a bigger city.

4) Nowhere with a strong pretentious/wealth-focused vibe. Aka nowhere that a lot of kids from my prep school would look at.

@Amandarin & Schmaltz: I started out looking for a not-too-liberal school, too…before I realized how much that limits your choices haha. Good luck!

@noimagination: You might be cutting Harvard then! I think they mention that the Hogwarts dining hall (in the films) is modelled after Annenberg, the freshmen dining hall.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing! I find it interesting that multiple people had political preferences take center stage.

That’s another reason to avoid Harvard. I already had plenty, but I suppose one more can’t hurt.

Medium to Large size (6,000-15,000), on the East Coast

Well known for academics, selective (especially in the business world)

Balance between intellectual and social atmosphere

Have school spirit and good athletics (must have football team!)

Diversity

Greek life

Good career and internship placements

Nice college town or near one

Good financial aid

I don’r remember more but thats mostly it!

^ You just named exactly UNC and UVA

If there is literally no theater program, I CANNOT go.

Recognized name in international business
Good internship opportunities
Study abroad opportunities
