I actually got sent my Rutgers acceptance the other day, it’s pretty cool to have SOMEONE admit you… =)

I got into Michigan State (I know, stop laughing) but they’re trying to bathe me in scholarship money, which is nice.

Two people who got into Yale EA last year also won Morehead Scholarships at UNC which is why you read what you did. My son was one of them. Yale had been his dream school since eighth or ninth grade but after winning the Morehead he decided that he couldn’t turn it down and is truly having the time of his life.

There were five or six students at Morehead finalists’ weekend (where they conduct multiple interviews and make final decsions) that were accepted to Yale EA but only two eventually became Morehead Scholars.

Many of his fellow Morehead classmates and older peers turned down Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and others to accept this scholarship.

To clarify, I didn’t mean to put down UNC in any way! It just occurred to me that someone who was (yes, I’ll say it:) obsessed enough with Yale to spend time on the CC Yale forum would be so excited about being accepted would then give it up. Of course, under the same circumstances, I’d be pretty conflicted.

Edited a couple times to fix grammar and get rid of a random happy face.

Didn’t really take your comment as a putdown. Without really knowing exactly what it means to be a Morehead it is hard to really relate. He really was conflicted for a while but after visiting with a number of existing Moreheads on another trip to UNC he found a number of people who had turned down Harvard, Yale, Stanford (a double legacy) and Princeton who all said that they had absolutely no regrets and were loving UNC and everything about the program.

He told us that he believed that it was so hard to win the scholarship and then even harder to turn down after putting everything in perspective. He concluded that with the travel opportunities and the fact that graduating as a Morehead is seen by grad and professional schools as well as employers as equal footing with HYP grads that there really wasn’t a downside, and to be honest, Chapel Hill IS a lot nicer than New Haven. He also liked coming out of school totally debt free and knows he can always go to Yale for grad/professional school. The program has actually exceeded his expectations so far.

Good luck to you BTW!

if i advance to the finalist round of the morehead, i’m going to have to talk to your son eadad… (i’m a semifinalist in NC right now)

I know a little bit about the Morehead program because I’m reasonably sure (but don’t quote me on this) that my mother has mentioned it on multiple occasions. She went to UNC for freshman and sophomore years, and I remember a number of occasions in which she remembered when she was there that there were these “preppy Morehead” students who had scholarships even though they were the students most likely to be able to afford the school-- and how much she wanted her daughter to be one of them. ;)

Chapel Hill is, admittedly, gorgeous. The only thing that stopped me from applying to UNC (after I got over the terrifying speech given in the information session ;)) was the fact that it’s quite large. And smaller size is one of the only things I’m looking for in a school.

I’m glad your son is happy in Chapel Hill! And thanks for the support. :)

i got into psu, and i turned in my schreyer app nov. 30.

i’m also applying to penn and princeton.

i feel like i should have applied to u of alabama…they’d give me full tuition, room and board, and computer, study abroad/ research $, plus a random extra $1000. roll tide!

Willow, I didn’t realize you were another Pennsylvanian! Yay! …Yeah, I got that letter, too. You another NMS Semifinalist? ;)

yeppers…ah, this stupid other colleges, trying to guilt me into attending with their money and computers…what are they thinking?

did you apply to penn state? perhaps we’ll be seeing each other there…though i hope not, since that would imply not getting into yale. and yes, i too am also a national merit semifinalist. my school had 9.
wait! i see that you too are in SE PA! maybe i know you…

Yeah, I got accepted to PSU; it’s the reason I started this thread. Figured people needed a place where they could talk about schools they’ve already gotten into instead of a school they’re freaking out about getting into. :)

What county are you in? I’m in Bucks, but I don’t think I know you since I don’t know any seniors named Erika (Or was it Erica?.Or did I imagine that?).

maybe you know me, willow. i live in Montgomery
PA is waaaaay over represented on CC. its cool :)

Unfortunately, I hear PA’s also waaaaay over represented when it comes to application numbers, as well. Eep!

i’m in berks, right next door. congrats on the psu acceptance, and did you apply to schreyer?

yeah, it’s erika. what’s your name?

displaced

keep me posted on your status and i’ll be sure to have him contact you if you make it to finalist. good luck

Ja, PA is the place to be deferred! haha jk i hope…for an acceptance for everyone!

haha. anyway, i think i went to a school in montgomery once…plymouth-whitemarsh? is that there? we had a track meet there. or maybe it was palmyra? bermudian springs? ahhh i dont know.

yea!! plymouth-whitemarsh!! thats me!!
you had a track meet this past year? i ran track last spring.

pa is over represented in application numbers, but its better than new york. new york sent in something like a fifth of all EA apps last year.

Victoria, I think you mean that it’s worse than NY :p

Nah, Willow, I didn’t apply to Schreyer (although I only know about a million people who did or are); I don’t really plan on going to Penn State. It’s mostly there so that, if something happens and I want to be closer to home, at a cheaper school, whatever… I’ll have somewhere to go. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: just way too big for me. And yeah, I know where Berks is! (Obviously. ;))

I’m Sara.

Another Pennsylvanian here (studying in the Czech Republic this year). So far I’ve been accepted to Pitt and University of Edinburgh. I’m from Lehigh, BTW.
