North Carolina road trip

The Catawba Indians are a Div. II school whose football team is usually quite good. My niece’s boyfriend plays for them. They have a very nice new football stadium on campus and are opening new dorms this year.

Is Catawba very conservative and religious? The ed dept looks good, lots of field experiences. I wish we had more time? She would qualify for merit money and they also have a teaching scholars program. We will be driving practically right by. But it would be too much.

I don’t know for sure but I wouldn’t think so. Catawba has a very active theater dept. I think that is one of the things they are known for. You don’t usually find a bunch of conservatives in the theater dept, lol.

hey you are right (:

Hey everyone thanks for the heads up about Catawba cause that’s one we haven’t even looked at. Pulled up their website and the campus is beautiful, coed, smaller environment and a very pretty chapel onsite too. Sounds like they have many great things to offer! NCAA II division sports program being one of them. We’re going to schedule a visit there for sure.

I am thinking about staying in Greensboro the night before we visit Elon in the morning. On mapquest, it shows that our hotel in Charlotte is 2 hours from Elon. If we stay in Greensboro it would only be 35 minutes. After reading your posts, I am thinking that it sounds like too much in the morning to try to drive from Charlotte to Elon. My daughter is not a happy early riser. She had to get up at 5:30 for school. She is so glad that is over till August.

hey candace that sounds like a good idea. Better not to be rushed either between Charlote and G’boro or G’boro and Elon.
I hear ya about early school times. My S’s school starts at 7:15. He has exams this week and had a late one today. Sleeping til 9:30 was a luxury.

I am still waiting for my daughter to wake up! She has been out a week and is still catching up. I hope she likes my proposed changes to the trip.

Well the trip is set. We will be at 4 hotels in 5 nights! It sounds like that old movie about if its Tuesday it must be Belgium or something like that. Thanks for all the help.

Have a safe trip!

Have a great trip.

Well, we are back! No more road trips for me. At least not for a while. And I didn’t realize how small a double bed is for two people! Anyway, we had a very successful trip. Our first stop was Oglethorpe in Atlanta. The school was very pretty and a nice area in Atlanta but it was not a fit for my daughter. I will give more details if anyone is interested. Then we moved on to Charlotte. My daughter and I absolutely loved Queens University. She felt the “fit” and was so chatty about the school. My daughter is sometimes hard to read but not this time. The school is beautiful and everyone was so super. She really felt the royal treatment. Coming from a very large high school, she loved all the attention. I will happily answer more questions if anyone is interested. UNC Charlotte was next. The school was very impressive, but way too big for my daughter. Then we drove to Greensboro. There was an accident so it took us an extra 30 minutes to get there. I am so glad we didn’t try to drive it in the morning! We visited Elon the next morning. Elon was fantastic. We loved the school. But she will not apply ED because she also loves Queens. Then we drove to High Point. The area was not very nice and we ended up cancelling her interview. So instead we cut our trip a day short and drove home. We got home after midnight! But I am happy to be home! If she gets into Elon, it will be a tough choice between Queens and Elon. And we still have Florida schools to look at. Thanks again for all the pre-trip help.

Charlotte - growing fast

candace,

Charlotte sounds like a great city.

i saw a tv news report last night that says that charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities in the u.s.

report said that ages 24-35 are moving there.

mentioned something like 80,000 people moving there every year and the banking industry as a big employer.

as you make your way to florida, your d might also want to check out Univ. of Central Florida. They have an honors college.

best of luck to your d in her college search.

candace, Glad you had a good trip. I think I may be the one who mentioned Queens to you a long time ago. I’m glad your D liked it. It is in such a nice part of Charlotte. I know someone whose D goes there and loves it. Funny that you said they gave you the royal treatment because their sports teams are called the Queens Royals. I guess you found that out on the tour though…duh!

Perhaps apropos of nothing, perhaps it’s a compliment, perhaps it’s a slight, but Dennis Rodman (supposedly) had this to say of Charlotte during his NBA days:

“It seems like a nice enough place to live, but I wouldn’t want to visit there.”

EDIT: I tried to see if there was a source for the above. This generic statement is all I could find (below the photo of the skyline):

http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6c294/c94c9/

PackMom, yes thanks for all your insight on Queens. It is a great school for the right student. My daughter loved the small college atmosphere and extra attention.
Condor30, its funny that you mention UCF. She would see way too many kids from her high school there. And it is way too big a school for her. They call it You Can’t Finish(UCF). But there are some good departments and an upcoming med school. So it might rise in the rankings in the coming years.
I am not sure how to take that quote about Charlotte. We only saw the area around the college and we really liked it. And the people we met were all super nice. If my daughter goes to school there, we will see more I am sure. We found a great restaurant called Cajun Queen. It looks like an old house and the food was delicious. It was close to Myers Park area.

Well, the idea of it being a Dennis Rodman quote (regardless of whether it’s just attributed to him or a bona fide quote) is that it’s a nice, family-oriented place where you might want to settle down, but it doesn’t exactly have the nightlife scene that Rodman would look for in the cities where he’d travel as an NBA player and as a playa in general.

Put in other words, as far as I’m concerned, it’s about the highest commendation a parent can hear for a place s/he might send a daughter to college.

You are right (:

Hey Candace, I’ve been to the Cajun Queen a few times. It is an old house. Used to have live (cajun style)band on the weekends. Great food. We lived near there for awhile.
