Northwestern=more straightforward admissions?

My son is going to apply to NU (McCormick) after all! Maybe he’ll be painting the rock some day…:)

Thank you!!!

Hot off the presses: 2127 ED applicants, 715 accepted, about a 33% acceptance rate.
It is my understanding that NU is lower than peer universities (those peer universities that have ED) in terms of the % of the freshman class they fill via ED.

Exciting news. Do you have a link? I’m trying to figure out if NU is trying to increase the number admitted from the ED pool.

Google the nytimes choice blog from yesterday; it has some ED figures from various universities.

I don’t know why a university wouldn’t try to lock in as many ED’s as possible. Lock in full-pays, protect your yield, make it so that there is less guessing work in May about who will come and who will won’t, less chance of either having unfilled beds or having to rent a room at the local hotel to deal with the overflow. Frankly I’m surprised that some reasonably-top university hasn’t decided to do the prisoners-dilemma thing and move towards all decisions by December 31 (or so).

The admissions office listened to me… haha jk. Well, I did tell them to increase the % of the class admitted ED for a number of reasons. Rankings are one of them but it’s not the main one since yield counts for only 1.5% or less in US News. More importantly, they will now be able to admit more low-income kids (who typically have lower stats) knowing the middle 50% stats will stay firmly in place. NU has been increasingly aggressive on this front. School spirit will increase as an ever higher percentage of the class will have NU as their first choice. Once you have more people declaring NU as their first choice, the appeal of the school might also increase.

35% of the class admitted through the ED round is great (it was 25% last year?) but I would advocate stepping it up to Penn’s level at around 50% (if the admit quality will remain high).

Not my experience when visiting. There is Evanston itself with dozens of restaurants, bookstores, etc. It takes exactly 26 minutes to get into downtown Chicago on the Express Metra, which you board just 3 blocks from the NU campus. 35 minutes if you get the Local Metra.

Bump, NU’s deadline is Jan 2 but it will accept supplements for 2 more weeks.

Just a heads up…

-APOL-a Mum on 1/01/11

My S just submitted his NU application- his last one!:)

Congrats, he is done!

Also, while the chart APOL cited says the deadline is Jan 1, the front page of undergraduate admissions says Jan 2, so be encouraged if you haven’t submitted yet :)

I saw that as well, but I was NOT going to mention that to my son!

Now whether spending over 50 K a year to go there for a bachelor’s is a whole 'nother matter.

I know it has a great reputation for journalism, but to spend 200K for a journalism degree (just an example of one major) is a complete waste of money. You are going to have to start out at a small town paper/station anyway. It’s all about performance in interviews or the quality of the work you’ve produced anyway.

Well, then, don’t go. Some of my fellow alums who are Medill grads have done quite well for themselves. Whether it’s “worth it” is an individual choice. I happen to think NU is “worth it” for reasons that have little to do with eventual salary made at a job.

I have friends from abroad who are absolutely outraged at the cost of private education here in the US. In Germany, it’s mostly paid for, and I believe the same is true in Australia. However, if you’re going to pay $200,000 anyway, Northwestern is one of very few institutions that are worth it. It has top programs across the board, not just journalism.

Mildcat - thanks for your insights. My d recently is interested in studying Materials Science engineering but is also interested in being able to minor in a language or linguistics. If you know, how flexible is it for students to pull that off?

just wondering if anybody knows when Northwestern admissions decisions are released. Will they be released in March, or are they saved until April 1st?

Last year, RD results for NU were released March 25. I believe decisions on the special programs come later (or at least it did for ISP, which was released April 1 last year.)

BigBadDad,

Many engineers pull off another major in arts & sciences with econ being the most popular. The school is extremely flexible about any combination you can think of across the schools of arts and sciences and engineering, or even education/communications. While not common, it’s not shocking to run into someone pursuing three majors. The only limiting factor is pretty much your ability.

Two years ago results released on Thurs March 26, last year Thurs March 25 so I’m assuming this year Thurs March 24th. Does anyone know if the dual degree program with music gets released then or later?

Looking at the 2015 results thread, I retract my statement that admissions at Northwestern is more straightforward than at other schools. That no longer seems to be the case. I’m quite frankly shocked that the admissions landscape has changed so much in just a year. Future applicants: If you want Northwestern, ED is your best bet.
