<p>Not to stray too far asunder, but in Portland, where I reside, the police chief regularly marches in the gay rights parade and Mayor Sam Adams is, as far as I know, the only openly gay mayor of a major US city. HW Bush refers to it as “Little Beirut” because of the welcome he received. GW was a no-show. </p>
<p>I left Chicago 20 years ago but my daughter will start NU next week. She would be appalled at discrimination against gays.</p>
